Ezio felt like death. He could say that with certainty now, because he knew this was death - the tarot cards gave him tidbits, a future that was not set in stone, but yet seemed very...absolute. There was no wiggling out of it, no avoiding the illness which had sunk into him, his body, his lungs, even what felt like his bones on some tiring days. The Ezio in his dreams was world-weary and sought peace; he’d found it, he embraced it, and the hope was that his death would be much calmer than the life he’d lived. Here a universe away, he was a lot younger - and was simply a man struggling with the unfortunate crossover effect. His cough had been afflicting him for a week or so, and yet he avoided a doctor’s visit despite side-eying from Elijah especially. Then it all just spiraled downhill rapidly and he was grateful that he’d basically been tossed into this hospital for recovery. Even if he loathed his current situation, and thought he could rest just fine at home. Hooked up to the IV pole by his bed, he had drips of who knew what, and antibiotics also pumped into him regularly. According to doctors, he would begin to feel better in a couple of days - but his pneumonia was quite advanced, so rest was one of the best things for him. Merda. Elijah had stepped out, and Ezio was half-asleep. Lying in bed with eyelids flagging, not even bothering to change the channel from whatever terrible show was currently playing on the television mounted on the wall across from him. Kol was positive he’d pay for this later. Elijah was going to be pissed, but it’s not like a shot or two of Fireball would kill Ezio. Given his current state of affairs, it might perk him up a little more. Kol remembered how sucky it had been to be laid up in the hospital for weeks after he injured his leg playing basketball in college (even if the meds had been fairly sweet) and he didn’t want Ezio to feel stircrazy. So, with Mareena packed in her travel seat, he went up to the room to visit his brothers lover. He rather liked Ezio. Anyone who could make Elijah happy was alright by him--as long as it wasn’t Katherine. Because, fuck that bitch. “Knock knock.” His lashes fluttered open and Ezio squinted, everything sort of sloshy and underwater - at least, that was what the medicines made him feel like. They coursed through his system, his whole body just tired and run down from being ill for some time and still continuing on. That probably did not help him, walking around with a case of actual walking pneumonia. Then it just got worse, no thanks to his dreams. “Ah, you really did come,” he smiled drowsily, motioning for Kol to take a seat anywhere. There were a few chairs by the bed, though Ezio could not attest to how comfortable they were. Probably not very. “How are you and the bambina?” “We are quite well,” Kol assured him as Mareena let out a little coo at Ezio. “Definitely much better than you are doing I’m sure. Been there mate, hospitals are never fun. Busted my knee so bad you could see the bone. Was here for three weeks recovering. Can't have my brothers lover going crazy.” He sat down at the chair next to the bed and pulled the bottle of Fireball out of his coat pocket. “One or two swigs only,” Kol warned. “As it is, Elijah is going to murder me.” The bambina was so precious - Ezio liked babies, and he had fond memories of his own children when they were small. Flavia and Marcello. Of course, that was a whole lifetime ago - a literal lifetime. He made do here with his niece and nephew, Claudia’s daughter and son, who were becoming sassy children in their own right (and stubborn - it was that Auditore gene). “You are a lifesaver,” he chuckled, eying the bottle of whiskey. Fireball was not something he drank often, but if that didn’t clear his sinuses then nothing would. “What should we toast to?” Ezio could handle one or two swigs. Elijah wouldn’t like it, but he wouldn’t do much besides sigh in fond exasperation. “To breaking the rules and bad decisions,” Kol said with a laugh as he bent down to pick up his daughter out of her carrier. “Though you better not make any of those ever, little one,” Kol said fondly as he kissed her cheek. “I’m surprised Elijah left you alone,” he observed. “He’s a feral animal when it comes to you and your safety….” “Thank you, by the way. It’s been so long since I’ve seen Elijah happy. I...don’t really think I have ever seen him happy. Elijah has always put everyone’s needs before his own. Always tried to protect and keep us safe that he never had time for himself. Hell, I never even knew he was sexually attracted to men, but I’m happy he has you.” Breaking rules and bad decisions! That seemed good enough to Ezio. He laughed throatily, watching Kol with his daughter. “She will make a few, I am sure,” he said in amusement, accent deep and heavy. Especially while floating on a cloud of feel-good drugs seeping into his veins. “But you will love her anyway.” Living and learning - the best part of the existence, even the bad experiences. He sat up a little in bed, readying himself for shots. This was the most entertaining thing he’d seen and heard all day - oh, he had his laptop and his phone, but sometimes words just started swimming on the screen. Hopefully he would not be confined to a hospital brick-mattress much longer. “No need to thank me. I do my best to make him happy,” Ezio said about Elia. “It goes both ways, too.” He made Ezio very happy - it was peace, that feeling, that love. Though even he didn’t know if Elijah was sexually attracted to men in general - sometimes you just met someone and the connection was there. It wasn’t always like that with everyone. Kol gently placed Mareena back into her carrier before walking into the hospital bathroom and bringing out a small dixie cup, handing it to Ezio. “This appears to be shot-sized,” he mused as he took a seat beside him again, and scooping Mareena back up into his arms and holding her close to him. Ezio was right. No matter what choices she made in life, he would love her and be a good father to her. Better than the shitty example the Mikaelson siblings had at least. “So, what have you two crazy kids been up to? Other than you being sick and him getting all growly and pissy in order to get you to go to the hospital?” Honestly, Kol couldn’t imagine that going over very well. He imagined Elijah tossing Ezio over his shoulder and dragging him there kicking and screaming. It was totally something his brother would do. Over his shoulder? Kicking and screaming? That sounded about right. Though Ezio was mostly just coughing and grumbling at the time - he didn't have the strength to really protest. "Salute," he told Kol, and lifted the small cup in a toast - and to bad decisions, plus breaking rules. He then swallowed the shot and - merda. It made him blink, eyes watering a bit. This stuff tasted like pure cinnamon intensity, like it set his stomach on fire yet left a sweet candied aftertaste. Mmm. One shot, maybe another, that was really all he could do. No doubt the nurses would smell this on him as well. And the charming man would get a proper scolding. "Well, I meant to ask Elia if he wants to visit Italy with me in the summer. To see my family. It will be summer break for my students, so a good time for a vacation." Fluffing up his pillow, he asked, "And yourself? We are always available to watch the bambina, if you ever need a night to yourself." He didn't know if Kol was ready to jump back into the dating pool yet, but sometimes it was nice to just be around other adults. In a bar. And to drink. “Salute,” Kol said, but didn’t take a shot. Not when he’d be driving his precious daughter home. He trusted his alcohol tolerance immensely, but there was zero reason to tempt fate when his little girl was involved. He’d have one later in Ezio’s honor though. Once Mareena was safely home and tucked into bed for the night. “I’m sure he’d like that,” Kol said with a smile. “Rebekah just returned from Italy with her now fiancee. You aren’t planning on proposing to Elijah while you’re there, are you? Because I don’t think Enzo and Rebekah would like it very much if you stole their idea,” he teased. Proposing?! Ezio needed another shot. Just one more, maybe half of one, and there the whiskey went. Down the hatch - and everything was even more...floaty. “No, no,” he assured, raspy and chuckling. “I do not think we are quite at that stage yet.” Maybe later - Elijah still had to introduce Ezio to his parents, and surely that would go over well. If they got so out of sorts about Rebekah marrying someone without a police record, who had a good job and seemed all-around normal, their son with another man might give them heart attacks. Oh well. “That is to say, who knows what will happen in the future,” he grinned. “If you would not mind having me as a brother-in-law.” Kol laughed at the look of shock on his face. He had enjoyed Ezio’s reactio and was glad that the man could show good humor and grace. But, admittedly, Kol would love to see the look on Mikael’s face if Elijah announced that he was marrying another man. The congressmans career would be ruined. Truth be told, Kol was contemplating a tell-all book that would ruin his parents, but Elijah’s new romance and Rebekah marrying a ‘commoner’ and not a lawyer or a Senator’s son could possibly do the trick even faster. “I wouldn’t mind having you in our family at all,” Kol admitted. “You make Elijah happy and that’s all that matters to me.” “Grazie,” Ezio’s smile turned sanguine - it was amazing what feel good effects a shot of whiskey could have (of course, that could also be due to the good hospital drugs or the fact that he was actually getting rest after putting his body through such an ordeal). “It is...somewhat hard, knowing that he has an eternity and I do not. But I will be here as long as he wants me, and when I am gone I would want him to find happiness again.” To not be lonely, was the thing. If someone else eased the ache of forever, then Ezio would have approved of that - he would not wish for Elijah to be by himself just because his human lover had passed on. With forever, there was a chance to open up your heart to many others over the course of time. In a way, that was a good thing. Though Ezio’s death, dreaming of the events leading up to what would inevitably be the end of him - he had to admit that was partly why he was so stubborn about Elijah taking him to the hospital here. He simply hated reminders of his mortality. Kol seriously doubted that Elijah would just allow Ezio to die. Hell would freeze over before that ever happened. Elijah would likely turn Ezio before something drastic happened to him, not that he’d be telling the young Italian that. That would be between him and Elijah. “That was the issue with Mary Alice and I,” Kol said with a nod and a frown. We discussed my...well...turning her after she gave birth to Mareena, but she died in childbirth. I couldn’t even get into the hospital room with enough time to save her, the doctors shooed me out so quickly…” he shuddered at the memory. “But that’s the risk a vampire takes when he falls in love with a mortal. Sometimes you only have that short time with the person, and then the question of turning off your humanity comes into question.” “Oh - no, I would not want him to do that,” Ezio’s brow crinkled in disapproval at the thought. No one could just turn off their humanity - well, in the technical sense he supposed that Elijah’s brand of vampire could. But that didn’t mean he should; it seemed dangerous, not to mention a little on the side of weakness, to simply give in like that and not deal with what made life so difficult. Life was always difficult, however, humanity was more often than not that light in the darkness. He would have to make Elijah promise never to do such a thing. Not for him, not for anyone - Ezio assumed that his partner knew better, but still. It was worth a discussion regardless. “I am sure it will work out in some way or another,” he said, eyelids flagging a little more. He felt so slow and groggy. “I will enjoy the time with him that I have.” Kol seriously doubted that Elijah would listen to reason if that ever happened. The only reason--the ONLY reason his humanity wasn’t turned off right now with the loss of his wife was because of the beautiful little girl currently asleep in her baby carrier. He loved his daughter more than life itself, and the pain of losing his wife wasn’t as horrible and raw with her in his life. “Of course,” Kol lied smoothly. “I hope you get out of here soon. We will drink properly since I’m fairly certain that Elijah is going to murder me for this.” Ezio laughed - it was an entertained chuff of air at the thought of Elijah overreacting, that was what he managed. “Oh, he will be fine,” the Italian grinned, all lopsided and obviously a touch smitten. He really did care for Elijah a great deal. “I will be too. Grazie for coming, and for the whiskey.” That had helped his mood quite a bit, anyway. He didn’t feel so on edge and hateful about being stuck here. Funny how that worked. “We will see each other again soon, I hope.” Both Kol and the little bambina - Ezio really did make a fantastic diaper changer. |
