After sitting on the orb for a couple days, Helena finally decided to take it to Asami. She finally had her emotions about it under control, so she thought she could be calm about discussing it. Besides, she was intensely curious to see what Asami could do with such technology. Luckily, it wasn’t an Artifact itself, so Helena felt safe giving it to Asami.
Sticking it in a bad, Helena headed off to the lab. She wondered what Asami was working on today. Stepping inside, she glanced around. “Asami?”
“Helena!” Asami came out from one of the research rooms, removing a pair of gloves. “How come you always manage to come by when I’m here and not at the office?”
It might just be that she typically managed her hours well enough, and it might also be that until the past week she’d managed to get out of actual CEO duty at least half the time. “Since the last time we saw each other I’ve spent most of my time in board meetings. I did manage to make time for lunch with a new friend.”
“Let’s call it a sixth sense,” Helena teased with a smile. It was...slightly accurate. Helena had a knack for tracking people down. Which wasn’t all that difficult when one knew their habits. “I’m sorry to hear about the board meetings, though I hope they went well and were productive. Though I’m very glad to hear you had lunch with a new friend.” And she was, she liked to see Asami get out and about and not keep herself locked away.
Asami’s grin only widened. It had honestly felt good to have lunch with someone again. Not that Helena wasn’t pleasant company but a girl couldn’t survive on one friend alone. It was lonely. She was so tired of being lonely. And Lena? Was hot. “I’m trying this new thing called having two friends again. How are you doing?”
Helena understood loneliness in a way no one ever should. So she was genuinely happy to see Asami branching out in life again. She laughed. “It’s a rather strange concept, isn’t it? Though I do hope it yields good results for you.” Helena should do some socializing herself, see if she could get a new friend or two herself.
“I’ve had my good days, and I’ve had bad days.” Luckily they hadn’t been as bad as they could’ve been. But it was bad enough to tip her mind back towards the dark places. “Though I have something for you.” She held the bag with the black orb in it out to Asami. She wasn’t going to tell her what it was or where it came from. She genuinely wanted to see the wheels in the woman’s head turn as she tried to figure it out herself.
And maybe Helena just wanted to see how long it took before Asami got frustrated enough to ask what it was.
“Me too.”
Asami’s eyes lit up. “You really know how to treat a girl right.” Helena’s dreams were so fascinating and she had many questions about them in general. Asami took the bag, pulled the orb out and giving it a curious look. “What’s it made of? It’s pretty light…”
“I do my best,” Helena responded with a smile. She watched Asami look at it. “That I actually don’t know. It’s not one of my creations.” Part of her wanted to kill the person who had designed it. The other part of her was trying to take the high road on that matter.
“I think we can run some tests to find out. Is it from your dreams?” She spotted the slot, rubbing it with her finger. “Looks like a coin slot. A pretty big one. But something tells me this isn’t a piggy bank.”
“It is, yes,” Helena answered. Though as Asami found the slot for the Janus Coin to slip into, Helena’s expression grew a little tight. It was one of her several sore spots. “No, it is not a piggy bank. The coin that goes inside of it is not in this world.” Thankfully, Helena silently added. “It is one half of the prison I was in after I attempted to destroy the world.”
“Then I’m not going to ask for that piece,” Asami promised. It had been on the tip of her tongue as soon as Helena had said it wasn’t of this world. “If you’re okay with me taking it apart, I’d like to try. We might be able to make something of it function. Or we might brick it.”
“I would never give it. If the Janus Coin ever shows up here, I’d simply destroy it as quickly as possible.” Considering the Warehouse didn’t exist here, she didn’t exactly have the means to lock it away safely. “I’d rather it be useful. It’s a hologram projector of a sort. The top twists to activate it, though it will not work without the coin. So simply be careful taking it apart. I’m uncertain what’s inside it.”
“I’ll see if I can’t turn the holographic projector into something actually useful,” Asami said. She actually had a bit of an idea, especially if she could replicate the technology. Little mini holopictures of people. That would either be very nice or kind of creepy.
“I’m certain you will be able to do that easily. Do forgive me if I don’t help with that project. It wouldn’t put me in a good frame of mind.” Helena had her own projects that she could work on anyway. She was curious to see what Asami could make of it, once she understood how the thing worked.
“I understand.” She set the orb down on a table, then wrapped her arms around Helena.
The hug was rather unexpected. While she wasn’t a stranger to hugging in this life, for some reason she hadn’t expected to get one here. But she recovered quickly enough and wrapped her arms around Asami. It was comforting, and certainly welcome. “I have the utmost faith that you shall make something positively brilliant from it.”
“I appreciate the confidence.” Asami was generally a touchy person, and Helena had seemed like she really needed something like that in that moment. She was glad the hug had been well received. “If my idea pans out, it might just give you some closure.”
Helena could be a touchy person when she knew people well enough. Otherwise, she was the type that liked invading people’s personal space. “I look forward to seeing what you do with it. I am uncertain what else may come from my dreams, though there are some inventions I can share with you. Do you have any magnetic boots? I made some in my dreams, mostly to counteract the anti-gravity trap in my house.”
Suddenly she got a wicked grin across her face. “I could make a batch of cavorite, if you’d like to see that process actually work instead of just seeing it mentioned in one of my books.” Helena would just need access to the right kind of metals that went into making it.
“Give me twenty minutes and I can whip up some magnetic boots. I have the materials, it wouldn’t be too hard.” She might be exaggerating a little, but she was already trying to figure out how to make the field so it could be turned off and on. “But I’d rather watch you work.”
“I can create some cavorite, but I’ll need some specific items.” Helena listed off the metals she’d need, along with a chemistry lab, or at least equipment that could melt said metals, and an oven of a sort so the cavorite mixture could harden into actual cavorite. “Barring that, we both could make some magnetic boots.” Helena actually had plans for security in her house. Harley and Christina would need magnetic shoes for themselves as well. Just in case.
Or just for fun.
“Por qué no tanto,” Asami joked. Why not do both?
Helena laughed a bit. “Both it shall be.” While Spanish wasn’t a language she was fluent in, she spoke enough of the so-called romance languages that she could discern what Asami was saying.
