When: Backdated WAY back to January
Where: Amycus' house
Warnings: cavity inducing

Regulus had missed Amycus and the girls terribly while they were in England. House sitting… at least made it a little more bearable than if he’d been in his own apartment alone all that time. He had Aslan with him, of course. So neither of them were alone. And even though he’d only been dating Amycus for a few months, the house already felt like it was filled with memories. He missed them, but it was less lonely than it would have been had he stayed home and Aslan go to a kennel.
He was reading a book on the sofa, the puppy spread over his lap asleep, when he heard a car pull up in the driveway. Aslan’s ears perked up and he jumped off of Regulus and ran towards the door, tail wagging. “Hey! I’m not a springboard!” Reg called after him, laughing. He put his bookmark between the pages and got up to go greet his boyfriend and the girls.
***
Amycus had loved getting to spend that time with his parents, having an extended trip and vacation. And seeing the way his girls lit up over everything their grandparents introduced them too. He could have lived without the ponies for Christmas but it was too late now. And it's not like there were no stables in California. But he'd figure that out later. Right now though...he was more concerned with catching up with his boyfriend. He looked up from getting Madison out of her car seat and grinned when he saw Regulus coming out to meet them.
He could definitely get used to seeing that. “Hello darling. Can you help me get Laurel out? I'll get the bags later. They're far too excited about telling you what they got for me to get them now.” He knelt down as Madison tugged on his sleeve so she could whisper in his ear and laughed as he picked her up. “Actually I have to bring one in now. There are pictures they drew that the princess says you have to see since you couldn't go with us. All the places we went to visit.”
***
Regulus grinned back at Amycus and Madison as he walked towards the car, leaving the door open so Aslan could follow him out. “I can’t wait to see them and hear all about your holiday.” Regulus opened the other door as Aslan sat in front of Am, waiting for him. “Did you have a good time?” he asked Laurel as he worked on getting her out of her car seat. He still found it a bit tricky to do, but he was getting better at it than he had been the first time he’d helped his boyfriend get the girls in and out of the car.
“We missed you, too, but we didn’t draw anything. I’m sorry for that. But, if your Daddy says its okay, we did make cookies. Aslan helped. He scared off a bird at the window that was coming to eat them while I decorated.” That was helping, even if it wasn’t. Regulus had made sure to tell him what a good boy he was for it.
***
Amycus reached out with his free hand to pet his little lion dog. Who wasn’t quite so little anymore since his head was now almost even with Amycus’ thigh when he was sitting down. “Were you good for Regulus? Do everything he told you?” He asked as he walked around to the trunk to get his carry on bag once she was settled in his arms. “I can’t speak for the girls but...I loved getting to spend so much time with mum and dad. Even with dad teasing me about you.” He said laughing quietly as Aslan leaned against him, almost knocking him over.
“Good boy Aslan. You protected our cookies from that thieving bird. Good guard lion,” he said, putting his hand on Aslan’s head as they walked and grinning at the deep woof his dog gave at the praise. “Aslan wasn’t any trouble was he?”
***
“He was very good for me.” Regulus promised his boyfriend. “Listened to everything I told him to, and curled up at the foot of the bed with me to keep me company.” He flushed when his boyfriend said that his dad couldn’t stop teasing him about him. “I’m sure all the skype calls didn’t help that at all, but I looked forward to them every day. I’m glad you got to spend so much time with them.”
He shook his head as he closed the car door, the little girl balanced on his hip. “He wasn’t any trouble at all. I think we both felt better that we had each other while the three of you were away.”
***
Amycus let himself imagine that - Regulus in his bed with Aslan curled up at the foot. No matter how many times his boyfriend stayed over he never got tired of seeing it. “That is the most adorable mental image. I was worried he’d try to take over the bed. He does that to me on the nights you’re not here.” He said giving him a half shrug as they walked up the walk. “What really got me teased by dad was how excited I got every time it got to be the time for it. And it gave the girls time with their grandparents that was well overdue.” He said, smiling as he set her down inside the front door and opened his bag to pull out the pictures. “Why don’t you two go put these on the dining room table and we’ll be right in for you to show Regulus alright?” He said, smiling at both of them as Regulus set Laurel down and the twins ran off into the house.
He pulled Regulus to him gently and kissed him. “I think...that is what I missed most of all while we were in England. Please please promise you’ll come with us next time?”
***
Regulus closed his eyes as he returned the sweet kiss. “I missed this the most, too.” He murmured back. “I got to talk to you on skype, but it’s not the same as getting to hug and kiss you. ...I need to get a passport, then, so I’m able to come with you next time.” Because he would love nothing more than that, to come with his boyfriend and daughters. And to meet his parents even if his dad does tease them over it.
***
“Not at all the same love. And the girls missed your reading to them. We can start working on your passport now? Make sure it’s ready for Christmas? Because I’m thinking that going to spend the holidays with them might become a pattern for us. The girls really loved all of the things, the traditional Christmas that my parents celebrate. Mass was a bit long for them but they had coloring books in mum’s bag and they’re still at that age where it’s cute when they get disruptive.” Amycus said giving him another gentle kiss before pulling back and leading him into the dining room where the girls were arguing about the order of pictures.
“Hey now! What’s all this noise about?” He asked, using his dad tone as he gave them a stern look.
***
“And I missed getting to read to them and tuck them in. I would love that, getting started on getting my passport. Do you think you can help me? Walk me through everything I need to get it? Because I’d really love to come with you next year.” It had been a long time since Regulus had had a ‘traditional christmas’.Yes he went to Jess’ parents for holidays, and he absolutely loved them for having him. But it wasn’t a long event with extended family. He didn’t really miss the Christmases his parents had, but he did miss being part of a huge family that way. “Maybe next year we can bring some games, too.”
Regulus walked into the dining room behind Amycus and tilted his head to the side. “Girls, remember what we said about inside voices? And about fighting?”
***
“They’re going to want you to tuck them in tonight. Would you mind?” Amycus asked, knowing that at least Laurel would be really excited about it. “And you know I’ll help Love. Happily. And what I don’t know we can get someone to help us with. Oh darling - you and mum are going to get along brilliantly. Just don’t play Monopoly with her if you want to win. She is ruthless at that game.”
Amycus had to bite back a smile at the way the girls immediately went apologetic at Regulus’ questions. He squeezed his hand gently and let go, walking over to the table. “Now...I thought it got decided on the flight that we were going to put the pictures out in the order of when we went places. Am I remembering wrong?” He asked, looking between both of them and then taking his seat while they reordered the pictures, pulling Laurel into his lap to cuddle her as Regulus looked them over. “Now we didn’t quite have the right red for the bricks so...we improvised with purple.”
***
Regulus shook his head and smiled as he leaned into Amycus. “I don’t mind at all, I’ve missed storytime, I’m excited to see what happens next in our book.” Not that Reg didn’t know what happened next, he must have read it dozens of times. But… it somehow made it more enjoyable for the girls if it was new for them too. And in a way, it was. Reading something as an adult is rediscovering it. It’s amazing how much of a story you forget, and reading it with the twins made it feel new again. “I know that you will. And I promise to be on the lookout for monopoly. Play defensively, keep anyone from getting all one color…”
“Purple bricks are fine, it makes it a bit more whimsical. ...Like we’ve fallen into wonderland. Is this one the plane ride over?” Regulus asked as he was looking over their first drawing.
***
“Dad and I sometimes form a secret alliance against her. Team up to try and take her down. We haven’t succeeded yet but we keep trying.” Amycus said with a grin.
Madison nodded her head eagerly as she pointed out the parts she’d colored. “I made the cloud green! Daddy said it was pretty! Laurel wanted make them all white. Because that’s what she saw out the window.” She said, talking a million miles a minute once she realized she had Regulus’ attention on her.
***
Regulus laughed at that and grinned. “Maybe next year, we can all try to form an alliance against her. And see how long it takes to get our butts kicked anyway.”
Regulus hugged Madison as she pointed at the green cloud and talked about the plane ride. She was really creative and saw the world in such a unique way. “I think the green cloud is really cool. It’s kind of like having a bush or tree floating in all the clouds.”
***
Amycus loved watching Regulus interacting with the girls, loved seeing how Madison just opened up to him and Laurel was getting there slowly but surely. “They wanted to draw you a picture of the plane but we didn’t have big enough paper for it,” he said a little smile and a wink when the girls weren’t looking. He’d had to work really hard to convince them of that because he knew that they’d get more enjoyment out of showing him the drawings of everything else.
Madison tugged on Regulus’ sleeve to get his attention again. “This is Grandmum and Grandpa’s house. It’s an...Estate!” She said beaming up at him as she remembered the word.
***
“Of course not, planes are huge! You’d need a piece… at least as big as the kitchen.” Regulus agreed as he looked up at his boyfriend. He looked back down as Madison tugged at his sleeve, and grinned at how proud she looked of herself for remembering the word. “It looks big enough to get lost in! Or play hide and seek in, at least.”
***
Amycus had to bury his face in Laurel’s hair to keep from laughing out loud when Regulus agreed with him. He needed to make sure to thank him for that appropriately later. After the girls went to bed probably.
“We did play a few rounds of hide and seek. They even got mum’s dogs involved in a couple. Rottweilers playing hide and seek is strangely adorable to watch really.”
***
“I’ve never seen a dog play hide and seek before. That really does sound adorable.” Regulus turned to Aslan, petting him before asking “How about you, do you know how to play hide and seek?” The large puppy just laid down on the floor and rolled over onto his back, exposing his belly to be petted. “That’s a no, then.”
***
“Maybe next time they’ll play it again and you can see it.” Amycus said kissing Laurel’s temple. “What do you think babies? Think you can get them to play with you again?” He asked, tickling Laurel as he looked over at Madison. “And clearly we need to train Aslan how to play that game! What do you think? Think we can teach him to play?” He asked laughing as Madison slid out of her chair to lay on the large puppy and rub his belly.
“You want to finish showing Regulus the pictures you two drew him while I make everyone some drinks?” He asked, sliding Laurel into her sister’s abandoned chair as he went into the kitchen, listening to the happy babble of his daughters behind him, a little smile on his face.
***
Regulus hugged the two girls closer to him as he looked over the drawings and let the two girls tell him all about their trip. Occasionally he would stop to point at something on the picture, either to complement it or ask the twins more about that part of the trip. He had missed this so much while they were gone. Missed the three of them so much.
