Honestly? Penny should have seen this one fucking coming. In the dreams (and he refused to think of them having proper noun capital-D status, because they were bullshit) he’d accidentally Travelled to China, so comparatively, this was much better.
That didn’t mean waking up, wearing nothing but a pair of sweats, in a cornfield somewhere in the Midwest was exactly fun. He stumbled his way out, disoriented and rubbing sleep from his eyes, and found himself on the front lawn of a small farmhouse. On the porch was a woman holding a shotgun, leveled between his eyes. Penny slowly raised his hands and started to back away.
“I’ll just - “ he started to say, watching her fingers move towards the trigger.
“Nope,” she said. “You’re gonna stay right where you are and tell me what the hell you’re doing on my property.”
“Would you believe…” Shit, he thought, come up with something and do it fucking fast. He latched onto an idea and heaved a heavy sigh. “Alright, I’ll come clean. Really epic night out with my friends, got way too drunk. I don’t wanna think about how I got out here or where the rest of my clothes are.” He could feel the weight of his cell phone in his pocket - he must’ve slipped it in there before bed, a habit he was going to have to start since apparently he couldn’t even sleep without magic fuckery deciding to take over his life.
The woman peered at him like she was examining them, but took the gun off of him and tossed her head back towards the house. “Well come on in, then, we’ll sober you up and get you home. Need a ride into town or something?”
“Uh,” Penny said. “I might need a ride further than that. Like to the airport?” At her look he said, “I meant it when I said I didn’t wanna think about how I got out here.”
Her mind was totally open, no blocks at all, and Penny was getting good at tuning in. Jesus wept, poor kid - shouldn’t have drunk so much ya idiot - pretty though, wouldn’t mind more’a these wandering my way - looks good without a shirt - come on now, Jenna, don’t think like that - just ‘cause Marv left doesn’t mean - he doesn’t look drunk, though -
Penny made sure to sway into the table, just barely catching himself. “Thanks f’r the hospitality,” he mumbled. Her thoughts immediately turned to taking care of him. Perfect.
“Alright,” Jenna said with a sigh. “Let’s get you set up on the couch, just for the night. Hold on a sec.” She disappeared down a hall and returned with an oversized t-shirt and a few blankets. “Won’t be the most comfortable but it’s better than nothing.”
Penny nodded and purposefully swayed again. Jenna caught his shoulder and pushed him into a chair. “Sit down before you hurt yourself. Just need to do one thing first.” She turned around, filled a glass with water, and then, without any preamble, dumped it on his head. Penny spluttered and glared, wiping his face. Jenna shrugged.
“I saw Signs,” was all she said, then turned and filled the glass again, setting it in front of him. “Drink that while I make up the couch.”
“What the fuck,” Penny asked the empty room. He drank his water and checked his phone - nothing, he couldn’t have been gone long then - and sent off a couple of SOS texts before slipping it back into his pocket. He could hear Jenna thinking, still - he looked good dripping wet, apparently, that was where most of her thoughts went. But a stray one slipped in. I can’t drive him to the airport, I’ll just take him into town, he can figure it out from there. Shit.
Well. He had something he could offer her to sweeten the deal and convince her to help him. He’d done worse for less.
When Jenna came back, he said a quiet, mental apology to V, then reached up and caught Jenna’s hand. He rubbed a thumb over her wrist, put on his best bedroom eyes, and slurred something about being much more comfortable in her bed than on her couch. He pulled himself up and leaned into her, kissing her neck and putting his hands on her hips. He heard the moment she gave in, and he turned his head and kissed her, letting her pull him back into the bedroom.
In the morning, she gave him another shirt and a pair of jeans, and a pair of old flip flops. Nothing like what he normally wore, but he’d take not having to be shirtless on a plane. She also made him breakfast before they climbed into her truck. She argued with herself the entire time they were driving, but when they passed the road that led into town and instead kept heading towards the highway and, yes, the airport, Penny breathed a sigh of relief.
