Today Aurora wasn’t wearing a dress. Today she was wearing a pair of raggedy shorts and a loose, light blue t-shirt. Her hair was braided back and she had a wide-brimmed hat on. There were a few streaks of dirt on her face. It wasn’t really unusual for Aurora when it came to gardening. She was never quite clean when she did it. She’d tried to be less dirt-covered today, but it was mostly impossible to do. Every time she wiped sweat off her face, she got more dirt on it.
Looking up at Laura, Aurora gave her a quick smile before finishing planting the tomatoes she was working on, grabbing one of the tomato cages she’d brought with her to put around it. She was happy that they were getting to do what they’d decided on. Maybe their gardens wouldn’t produce too much immediately, but eventually they would. She’d carefully selected the plants and the dirt. She’d put some fertilizer on the plants once they were all done. “Are you okay? I have some sunblock in my bag if you need anything. Also some water and snacks. I didn’t know if we’d need them, but it’s better to be prepared than not.”
It was kind of adorable, and Laura realized she liked to surround herself with human sunshine. She supposed it helped counter her own darkness. For example, when she was usually covered in dirt it was because she was hunting someone. But today, she was about as dirty as Aurora and enjoying it. She’d worn a pair of old jeans and was wearing a short, midriff baring tank-top and watched Aurora carefully so that she’d know what to do with the plants.
“The sun won’t hurt me.” To demonstrate, she pricked her finger on a gardening tool and held it up as it healed almost immediately. “My dream gift.”
Aurora’s eyes widened a little when she saw Laura’s finger heal on its own. “Oh. I can’t do that.” She wondered what it must be like to have dream gifts that made healing happen really fast. She reached out to take her hand so that she could study it a little closer. “That’s amazing. I wish I had cool abilities. I’m very human, though. Not even super-powered human.” Not that she thought that was bad. She liked who she was.
Then something occurred to her. “Oh no! I was wrong.” She smiled a little. “I do have abilities! I have a green thumb and my smile lights up even the biggest room.” A small laugh escaped at that. “At least that’s what people tell me. The second part. Not the first. That’s me.”
Laura chewed her lip, and smiled shyly. “It’s really useful. Especially when getting shot at. I have other things I do.”
Which were probably cool but also really kind of scary. She sat back on her haunches and tilted her head. “You also have the gift of being incredibly humble.”
Aurora frowned for a moment at the idea of Laura being shot at. She knew, of course, that there were things in Laura’s dreams that weren’t good things. But she didn’t like the idea of her being hurt. She didn’t like the idea of anyone she was friends with being hurt. Not even the surlier ones. Those did seem to be the people that took to her for reasons she couldn’t truly explain, but that’s where she was. “I hope no one here shoots at you. I’m not very terrifying and I haven’t even learned how to swordfight yet, so I wouldn’t even have that to fall back on.” But she was going to learn how to swordfight. Killian was going to teach her. Which reminded her about all of the other things she hadn’t talked about. She also had to find someone willing to teach her self defense.
She smiled down at the ground. “Is that sarcasm or real?” It was hard to say, but then Aurora didn’t think of herself too highly. At least not in a way that she thought herself to be above others. But she wasn’t sure.
“We could teach you. To sword fight. Just for fun.” Laura didn’t like the idea of Aurora actually getting into a fight, but fencing and swordplay could be a lot of fun and quite beautiful. “Or at least how to defend yourself. There’s a technique, for escape and for evasion.”
She reached over and touched her knee. “Sarcasm. But I don’t mean that badly. And you do have a sunny smile.”
“Killian is going to get me a sword. He…” She paused. “Well, he found my parents. I thought they were dead, but they weren’t.” She frowned a little. “Apparently when I was little, I was kidnapped and people just kept trying, so they decided to send me away with my aunties.” She had to call them still, to talk to them. She had to talk to her aunties, too. “Which is why I thought maybe I should...learn to defend myself. In case someone tried again.” She didn’t want to get kidnapped. She guessed she could always take someone with her when she went, but she kind of wanted to meet them alone the first time.
“I’d hope that it wasn’t a bad thing.” She gave Laura a small smile. “I try to be as sunny as I can be. Though, I guess it’s not really trying. I guess it’s just how I am.”
Laura took Aurora’s hand and squeezed it. She could imagine what it would feel like to find her parents, but she couldn’t imagine not talking to Logan. She would have stopped at nothing to see him. “Anyone who tries to take you while I am around would be in for a lot of pain.”
But Laura wouldn’t always be around. Self defense was a good idea.
Aurora’s smile grew at Laura’s words. “Well, I guess I know who to invite if I need backup.” It was nice to have people that were willing to look out for her. It helped fill the gap that she felt outside of the dreams. The Horned Woman and the crow were her only friends in the dreams and she’d seen neither of them here. She’d seen crows, of course, but not ones that made direct paths to her. Not ones that would have played with her in the grass. It was nice to have other people.
“I think I’m going by myself for the first meeting. I have to call them first and talk to my aunties, but maybe after the first time we meet I can bring other people with me.” She studied Laura for a moment before starting to plant another tomato plant. “Um. Would you want to go with me sometime? You don’t have to or anything. But maybe if you wanted to...you could. If it goes okay.”
Aurora might not want to see Laura ever again if Laura had to resort to her best kind of fighting. She just hoped that would never be necessary. “You have my number, if you need me. And I’d like to go with you to meet them. I know they didn’t raise you, but genes do sometimes matter so they probably aren’t horrible people.”
She hoped.
Aurora smiled at her a little. “I’ll call or text once I know how to feel about meeting them. Promise.” She reached over to Laura, touching her arm. “You’re the best.” A pause. “They didn’t raise me, no, but...I have to know. I really have to know them. I don’t know anything about them outside of what Killian has told me and...I don’t know. I hope they are good and that they are happy to have me around. Because otherwise...I guess it’s like...losing them all over again, you know?”
She hoped that when she met them, nothing happened, that she didn’t need to do anything, but she would be okay if she did. She had to be okay. “So let’s get all these plants...planted. As long as they are all together, we can start getting vegetables back.”
If they were good people Aurora had nothing to worry about, but if they weren’t, Laura hoped it wasn’t too painful for her. She hesitated, then leaned over and hugged her. “It’ll turn out good. Just keep thinking positive.”
Aurora felt her heart expand in her chest a little at the hug and she hugged Laura back, squeezing just a little. “Thank you, Laura. I’m glad you’re my friend. I’m glad you’re here.”
