Lexi hadn’t had any new dreams in some time. The last time she’d come to Stefan when the curtain to the Other Side had been down briefly and they had gotten to spend some quality time together before the veil had been put back up and she’d been sent back to the Other Side where she was able to watch him again.
Her newest dream had also found ghost Lexi finding Stefan, but in this case Stefan was also a ghost because she had found him on The Other Side and saved him from being sucked into Oblivion. Together they had caught up on the plan to bring Stefan back, which had included Damon sacrificing himself to kill the Travelers then meet up with Bonnie who was the Anchor. Of course, the world being incredibly unfair, Lexi realized that each time they passed through Bonnie, it was killing her. Lexi, only wanting the best for Stefan, refuses to pass through until Damon arrives and in the process they were attacked by Markos and while keeping him from passing through, Lexi found peace.
It annoyed her that she would have given up her place for Damon, but in a way she understood. That didn’t mean that she felt any differently towards Damon in the waking world, but she understood it.
The dreams only made her feel more grateful for her time with Stefan and that was why she had offered to go with him when he went to take his and Bubble’s puppy for a walk.
Stefan thought Lexi was acting a little strange, but he didn’t press. They’d reached a point in their friendship where a lot of their communicating was nonverbal. And all the rest happened when they were ready to talk. He would wait for Lexi to come to him, instead of trying to get info out of her before she was ready.
He put the harness on the dog, then clipped on her leash. She was vaccinated and spayed, so she was ready to walk on a more regular basis. Stefan was excited to get her out into the real world. He held open the door for Lexi. “So… I’m not sure how far she’ll make it before she gets tired and I’ll have to carry her back home.”
“Bet you never thought you’d have a dog that you’d have to carry back,” Lexi smirked as they started walking, “Next thing you know you’ll have a bag to carry her in.” She smirked over at Stefan, picking him with a tote bag and the puppy’s head sticking out of it. “And she’s probably gonna attract a lot of women who want to coo and gush all over her and some of them might even try and hit on you. Are you ready for that?” Not that Stefan had had problems with women hitting on him before he’d gotten a girlfriend, but a cute puppy was like a chick magnet.
Stefan chuckled softly. “No. I never thought I’d have a dog that I have to carry around. But, really, I don’t mind. I love this dog.” He said, reaching down to rub Lulu’s head and neck gently with his hand. Then he stood back up and headed to the door. “...you think so? Why didn’t I think of this ages ago, then?” He teased. Now he didn’t need women hitting on him. He had Bubbles, and he was incredibly happy with her. “I’ll have to beat ‘em off with a stick?”
“Awww, you’re so cute.” Lexi smirked as she watched Stefan rubbing Lulu’s head, “I mean, personally, I don’t know why you haven’t had women falling all over you sooner. Do they not have eyes?” Lexi had always thought that Stefan was extremely good looking and maybe if they weren’t practically brother and sister and things had been different that time they’d kissed, she could have snatched him up, but the thought of dating Stefan felt wrong, “Or you could always just grab Lulu and put that vampy speed to use.”
Stefan wasn’t much of a blusher. Especially now that he was a vampire… was it even possible for him to blush anymore? But sometimes when Lexi showered him with compliments, he couldn’t help but feel something burning in his neck. “Shucks.” He said in reply. He had no idea what else to say. “I dunno, don’t you think it’d scare her to go zooming through the air like a jet?”
Lexi thought about that for a moment or two before nodding, “That’s true. It could scare her and we wouldn’t want to do that.” She said, glancing down at the puppy as she trotted down the street in front of them, “Hey, so have you had any new dreams lately?” She was curious if he had gotten to the point of her last dream yet.
Stefan sighed as he thought about it, trying to remember the last new Dreams that he’d had. He shook his head a little, eyes turning to his friend once more. “No, not that I can think of. I can’t remember the last time I had new Dreams. Why, what are you dreaming of now?”
Lexi wasn’t surprised that Stefan might not have had any new dreams recently. The dreams came at their own pace, which meant either one right after the other or months between. Lexi hadn’t had a new dream in quite sometime so it was interesting that she was having new ones now, “The Other Side was collapsing. Bonnie was the anchor. Shit was hitting the fan in Mystic Falls as usual.” She didn’t want to go into too much detail just in case Stefan didn’t want to know everything yet.
“I want to say What else is new? but that seems rude. I don’t mean it to be rude. I just… mean it. The shit’s always hitting the fan in Mystic Falls.” He paused for a moment, considering. “What on Earth kept us all there? I mean, I could have left at any time. I should have left. I should have left over and over again.”
Lexi smirked and nodded, because she’d felt the same way on a number of occasions. Were it not for Stefan going back to Mystic Falls in the first place, she wouldn’t have gone to visit him and Damon wouldn’t have killed her to save his own ass, “I suspect it was Damon and Elena keeping you there. Oh and Caroline.” She couldn’t help but tease Stefan about Caroline in the dreams. Of course she knew that they were only friends in the waking world, but it was obvious to anyone with eyes that there was something developing between them, “Oh, and we can add another reason to dislike Damon to my list. Cause of him, I was unable to pass through and be alive again.”
It was the same thing keeping him in Orange County. Maybe. That indescribable pull to the place. It wasn’t just that Damon was there, or his other friends, or the job or his house… It was something else, something entirely different. As if leaving was just… wrong. He had money for it. He could compel people. He could travel the world if he wanted to, and yet he was still here. Bubbles was a good reason to stay, but that wasn’t it, either. He couldn’t put it into words.
Stefan sighed. “Oh, Damon. Everyone’s favorite villain.” He shook his head a little, stopping when the dog started sniffing at some crabgrass.
Lexi sighed and shrugged, “Hey, if the shoe fits…” Okay, so she had to give Damon a little bit of credit, he had risked his own life to try and find Stefan on the Other Side. Not many people would voluntarily die with no guarantee that the plan to bring them back would actually work, but Damon had. Elena had too, but that had more to do with Damon than with Stefan. “You know that I would forgive him if I could, but I just can’t. Not after the things he’s done here.” It wasn’t like she had actively gone out of her way to dislike Damon, but after he’d told her that he was glad he’d killed her in the dreams and implied that he wanted to do it in the waking world then after treating Elena the way he had, twice, she simply couldn’t bring herself to just sweep it all under the rug.
“No, I know.” Stefan completely understood. Damon was… well, he’d made a lot of mistakes. And he seemed to relish in that fact. There were things that were unforgivable, Stefan understood that. But Damon was his brother. And… it was complicated. He wasn’t sure he could explain it, much like the pull to stay in Orange County. It was there.
“He’s not causing you any problems, is he?” Stefan asked. “Here, I mean?”
Lexi shook her head, “Not recently, no.” She tended to go out of her way to avoid talking to Damon so that she didn’t have to worry about him starting something since he was the one who couldn’t seem to drop things despite the fact that he claimed she was the one who started things whenever they spoke.
“Well, I hope it stays that way.” Stefan hated that his best friend and his brother were always at each other’s throats. But he didn’t know how to fix it. He didn’t really want to talk about Damon. He glanced over at Lexi. “You doing okay? I mean, apart from my brother being a dick in the Dreams?”
Lexi didn’t really want to talk about Damon either, but sometimes it couldn’t be helped when talking about the dreams, “Yeah, I’m doing fine. Just enjoying my immortality.” At first it had taken some time to get used to the thought of being immortal and what that meant for her family and friends who weren’t, but there was nothing Lexi could do about that other than turn everyone else into a vampire and she didn’t want to do that. So, she just had to make the most of it. “And I mean, I guess it’s not the worst thing in the world to find peace, in the dreams, but being alive again would have been nice.”
Stefan nodded. That’s what he was doing in this world, not necessarily in his Dreams. It seemed like things kept coming up left and right to stress everyone out, put them in danger, all of that. Thank god the real world gave them some time off to breathe. “We’ll just have to make the most of this world, too.” Stefan said, and wrapped an arm around Lexi’s shoulders. “Live every moment to the fullest.”
