Anne had seen the news reports in the morning ad taken precautions to ensure the safety of the hotel, her staff and it’s guests. She had hired some private security guards to patrol the premises and escort guests from the front door to their valeted cars and such.
Beyond that however, she hadn’t thought much about her own safety, assuming the gated community she lived in would be sufficient. When one of her neighbours sent a message to say she had seen these men in white armour breaking in through front gate. Looking down from the penthouse windows, she saw it for herself. Having fired off a text to Jim immediately, she had made sure the front door was locked and pushed one of the big armchairs in front of the door to barricade it somewhat. She had no weapons in her place bar the knives in the kitchen and she was really at a loss as to what to do.
Using a kind of hand held battering ram, a squad of troopers burst through the front door. They covered the room like some kind of swat team, and began to move through the house, leaving wrecked furniture and valuables in their wake.
There was a sound, like the twinkling of a wind chime. In a beam of sparkling light, Jim appeared behind the troopers. He fired his phaser, stunning one after the other. The last dove for cover and Jim did what any self-respecting Captain of the Enterprise would do. He flung himself bodily at the soldier, rolling to his feet and grabbing him by the head. Kneeing the trooper in the head, Jim pushed him back, then took a running leap and kicked him with both feet, right out Anne’s window.
Anne screamed as the Troopers barged in and she backed against the wall of her living room, knife held out in front of her as if it would help. Seeing Jim materialise out of thin air behind the Troopers was not what she expected and she screamed again, even as relief ran through her at seeing his beautiful face appear in her house. With a hand to her mouth, she watched him with concerned eyes as he made short work of the intruders. Pressing herself against the wall as much as she could while he worked, she couldn’t help close her eyes in relief as she released a shaky breath, the knife in her hand shaking as she did. “Jim...Jim…” she said shakily.
“Easy, I’ve got you.” He came over, gently taking the knife and wrapping his arms around her in a hug. They must have thought she was some kind of Rebel.
Anne gladly gave up the knife and fell into Jim’s embrace, wrapping her arms around his neck as she tried to compose herself. Hiding her face in the crook of his neck, she willed herself not to cry, but even still felt some tears on her cheeks. “Thank you, thank you for coming,” she whispered, clutching him closer and pressing a soft kiss to the skin of his neck.
“If I’m able to, I’ll come,” he promised, and kissed the side of her head. “Lets get you out of here, they’ll probably come looking for their lost patrol.” There’d be others. Jim thought about it, then pulled out what looked like a black flip phone, with gold trim. He flipped it open. “Kirk to Enterprise. Two to beam up.”
Nothing happened, and he tried again. “Computer, lock onto this signal and energize.”
Again, nothing. “Shit. They must have a jamming field up.” He’d need to disable that before they could beam out.
Anne watched him speak into the flip phone as if he was expecting a response and frowned. “What is that? Who are you talking to?” she asked quietly. She didn’t want to risk upsetting him after all he’d just done for her.
“My ship,” Jim explained. “The one from my dreams. That’s the.. Work project I’ve been doing lately. She was badly damaged and in need of repairs. I can beam you to safety, once the interference is down.”
“Oh,” Anne replied quietly, before wiping her face with a hand to try and rid herself of any remaining tears. “So uh...how do we...how do we get rid of it? The interference? What do we need to look for?” she asked, trying to get her brain around everything he was saying and be vaguely helpful for him.
“Some kind of transmitter. I don’t think it’s entirely intentional, they could be communicating with their command, and that would jam my signal.” Jim let go of her, and pulled out a black, rectangular box with a display on the top. “West.”
Anne frowned at the box Jim pulled out, trying to see what it was on the screen that had given him the information. “Ok, lead the way,” she told him, sounding more confident than she felt. “One last thing,” she grabbed him by the back of the neck and pulled him down for a swift kiss of thanks.
Jim grinned, then cupped her face. “Just stick close to me. And keep an eye out for anyone trying to flank us.”
He pulled something out of his belt and put it in her hand. “This is a phaser, it’s already set to a setting high enough to get through their armor, but it won’t kill them, just stun them Just point and pull the trigger.”
Anne briefly leaned into Jim’s touch before looking down at the weapon he pushed into her hands. “Ok, just...point and shoot,” she swallowed thickly having never held a weapon before. “I can do that,” she licked her lips nervously before looking back up at Jim, determined they’d get out unscathed. “Let’s do this.”
