We’ll be magnificent together, darling.
Who: Jean and Emma
What: A late night visitor of Cosmic Entity variety, and sharing the load.
When: 5/2
Where: Emma's house
Status: Complete
Rating: PG-13

Since she’d started dreaming of the battle with the Avengers, protecting Hope, waiting to see just how things were likely to turn out with the Phoenix force yet again, Emma had been feeling… Off.

Not in a bad way, it wasn’t the steady pit in her stomach growing, it wasn’t even a hard lump in her throat about bad things leading their way, even with Kitty’s warning that things in the dreams were going to get bad before they were good. It seemed like there was always something bad happening in the dreams anyway. No, Emma wasn’t apprehensive or worried, it was like an excitement tingling through her near constantly.

Like she was getting energised for something.

Maybe she should worry, but she wasn’t really too terribly concerned. Not when she felt like things were finally settling to a good and steady part of her life. She and Jean were okay, Christian was safe, her father was dead.

It seemed good in her opinion.

And yet, for Jean, there was something niggling at the back of her mind. Pricking. Burning. For a year, now, she’d had a feeling of foreboding, whispers when she was alone, bursts of power and fire.

After these new dreams, were she’d died once again, that fire seemed to cool. Until she’d dreamed gain. Of rising out of the lake. Of seeing Scott. Of…

The fire filled her veins on the echo of Scott’s scream. It was too much power, too fast, and part of her wanted it and part of her rejected it and for three whole seconds she could see the totality of the universe and every voice on the planet was a cacophony in her ears.

She sorted through the thoughts until her mind was her own. And yet her mind wasn’t just her own anymore. And she could hear more than the Phoenix.

“Emma?”

“Yes darling?”

It wasn’t complex to hear Jean, it’d never been hard to hear Jean. It felt like it everything was amplified for the moment, her senses were tingling on overdrive right then, especially her mind. Sharp and constant, she knew it was coming, it was going to throw down the walls and surge. “Is everything alright?”

Emma didn’t actually care if the Phoenix did surge, not right at that moment.

“I killed Scott.” Jean put a hand to her head, the event running over and over in her mind. “The Phoenix did. She’s here. She’s…” Jean’s eyes flashed fire. “She’s here.”

Well that was less than fabulous.

“Oh.” It was probably a lackluster response to the fact that Jean had just killed a man they supposedly both loved at one point, although the notion that Phoenix had finally gotten to the point where she’d gotten tired of Scott didn’t utterly surprise Emma. “That’s… complicated.”

There was a whisper in her mind that told her it wasn’t really, it was how things should go, how it should be. Jean was meant to wield the power of the Phoenix in almost all the realities they dreamed of, it made sense that she would grow into it all the time. Phoenix here and now had been building and building, since before Emma had shattered to pieces and Jean put her back together.

Was that why Emma felt her? Through her bond with Jean, Emma was obtaining portions? “I think I knew that though.”

Something seemed a little wrong. There was too much, and Jean wasn’t ready. The Phoenix dug its claws into her heart and it burned and it wanted more. The Phoenix was all-consuming life and death and it wanted more. She knew Emma, she understood Emma, Emma had been a part of her and she’d been a part of Emma. To the Phoenix, nothing seemed more natural than bringing fire and ice together as one.

Fire flowed through Jean’s connection to Emma.

It made sense. At least in Emma’s mind it did.

The cosmic power was vast and all consuming, and they’d learned that time and time again, nothing contained it, not even the martyr that was Jean Grey. But they could. She knew now that she shared Phoenix in the dreams, when Hope turned it down, wasn’t ready. It took to them, split five ways, but just as powerful.

“Jean darling, remember it’s just a world, it’s just a version of a life you didn’t live.” She could assimilate the growing power feeding into her through their bond later, so long as Jean was right there with her. “Everything is okay here.”

At least… for now it was.

Jean grabbed Emma’s hand, the connection only making it easier to share the load. “I’d like a world without this.” This. This power. It was always drawn to her, and it always led to heartbreak and pain. How had Rachel carried it for so long, when she couldn’t?

But her daughter didn’t exist and so she couldn’t ask her. “I’m sorry.”

Turning their hands, linking her fingers with Jean’s the same way their minds were so intricately woven together now, Emma gave a tender, soft smile. “It’s fine.” It wasn’t, somewhere she knew it wasn’t and that dangerous things could happen here. But she hadn’t gotten to that worry just yet, “I can help, I’ll help. We can get through this together.”

Long enough to figure it out. If Phoenix would stay, if she’d go, if they’d buckle under the pressure or rise from the flame like the bird herself.

“We’ve both had her at one point or another, and we can’t do it ourselves, but maybe together she’ll settle, maybe together we can flourish.”

“Share the load?” Jean asked. She nodded. Her voice didn’t sound particularly different, but it echoed in her own head. Squeezing their threaded fingers together, Jean smiled back. “You know, I should be the more confident one right now.”

But she was worried, and sad and grieving. A little angry. (okay, a lot angry). So she forced herself to basically calm her tits. “I love you. You know that but you need to know that.”

“You’re the one the Phoenix has led to her death numerous times over, you don’t have to play any parts with me.” Emma wasn’t going to let that happen here, she’d burn a planet out before she let it happen. Just not the one they were on, of course.

“I love you too,” they did know, Emma knew and Jean knew, this wasn’t something that was taken lightly. And just as Emma would kill for Christian, she’d kill for Jean. She’d die for Jean, but she hoped it wasn’t necessary. “And we can get through this, together. We’ll be magnificent together, darling. We always are.”

They were magnificent, each in their own way. Together the might well be unstoppable. A true power couple, and as much as part of Jean would always love Scott and what they might have had, she also knew that her fate couldn’t be tied to his.

“I think … I think we’ll be okay.”
