Who: Capable and Furiosa When: Late April Where: Car What: Out for a drive Rating/Warnings: Low/None Status: Complete
Capable loved it when Furiosa asked her if she’d like to go for a drive, while she was learning herself she prefered being a passenger. She probably always would. Furiosa was a natural behind the wheel anyway, Capable felt completely safe with her girlfriend behind the wheel.
She was taking the opportunity to tell Furiosa about her first day at her storytelling course, she was already loving it and was excited about the things she was going to learn. “I never knew there were so many different ways to tell a story. We all did a little reading though and the tutor said she wasn’t surprised I was so popular with the kids, apparently I have a good reading tone and she liked how I did voices too” she beamed happily.
Driving was Furiosa’s favorite thing, and she liked to share it with the people she cared about. She’d often picked up people when she’d been trucking, so she didn’t mind people talking while she drove.
“I love when you live up to your name,” Furiosa said, winking at her. “So you do the voices? What kind of story did they respond to the best?”
It had been when Furiosa was driving her truck that they’d first met, though the circumstances hadn’t been ideal. Still Capable had been saved on that day and would forever be grateful to Furiosa for that.
Capable chuckled before nodding, “Of course. Each character has to sound different” she’d never really thought about it when she’d started reading to the kids at the store, “The kids always like a good mix of action, adventure and romance. Even the boys don’t mind a happy ending as long as there’s been a sword fight or a dragon in there somewhere”
It was amazing how one little thing could change the course of her life. Furiosa lazily put her hand on Capable’s knee. “I always liked a good sword fight or a dragon.”
She winked. “Which story has been the overall favorite so far? For you, and for the kids.”
“I thought you might have” Capable teased with a smile, laying her own hand over Furiosa’s and linking their fingers. It felt so nice to be out like this together, just driving because they wanted to. No need to be anywhere or do anything.
“Actually it’s been one Tessa’s boyfriend Will suggested. He’s from Wales and he suggested King Arthur. It’s been very popular. In fact it’s the one I’ve had requests for the most”
“King Arthur is a classic. Any specific version?” There were as many versions as there were stars in the sky, as far as Furiosa could tell. She’d always liked the slightly more silly versions, which didn’t seem like they’d be her kind of thing.
“We have a beautifully illustrated copy at the shop, I’ll have to show you” Capable said, “It’s a fun story. I’m reading a slightly more complicated version at the moment, there are so many books on the same myth. It’s quite incredible” she added, she kind of loved that there were so many interpretations.
“If you show me that, I might have to buy it,” Furiosa warned. She took the next exit, driving the corvette onto a small road that ran adjacent to the freeway. “Don’t tell anyone, but I like that Disney version.”
Capable smiled, “Well now I have to show you” she replied, because Capable was all about increasing their book collection. “Oh, we should watch that” she was always eager to watch new films, which was most of them for her thanks to growing up where she had.
“I think we can find it on netflix, or buy it online somewhere,” Furiosa replied. If she could remember the name. Sword in the something. It was one of the cartoons. Though she’d also enjoyed that Excalibur movie from the 80s. She glanced out of the corner of her eyes and sounded a little unsure. “Sometime, you should read to me while we drive.”
Capable nodded eagerly, “That would be good” She enjoyed watching the films she’d missed in her time at the commune. It was fun and she always took her friends recommendations on board and tried to watch what they suggested. Smiling brightly she looked at Furiosa, “I’d like to do that. It wouldn’t distract you too much would it?” she asked.
“No, it wouldn’t distract me at all. It’s too bad you don’t have a book with you right now.” She smiled at Capable. “But maybe you could make something up for me. With pure heroes and happy endings.”
“I could try. I mean that’s part of my course too, we have to improvise too” Capable said, thinking for a moment before taking a breath, “Once Upon a Time...” she decided to turn their story into a fairy tale. A girl locked away from the world who escaped and was found by a beautiful warrior woman who brought her to safety and helped her find love as she discovered the world. It was a lovely story.
It was a beautiful story, and if the road got a little blurry in places, Furiosa would never admit it.
