Aurora was still reeling from the knowledge that her parents were alive. She’d forced herself to move forward with her life, though. She had to go to school. She was exhausted, but there was only so much that she could do to keep from focusing too much on things she couldn’t change. Today she was taking a break from her house and the questioning looks her aunties kept giving her to sit in the park and watch people play with their dogs. There were a few benches that were under trees and she wasn’t too close to most of the people. If you didn’t pay attention to the people walking on the path.
Her bright yellow dress showed a bit more sunshine than she was feeling that day, but she was determined to put on a smile and a show until she believed in all of the faked happiness enough to feel real happiness. At least at the levels she was previously used to. She was, in her way, happy to know that her parents weren’t dead, but she wanted to know why she was where she was and what was the reason that she’d been sent to stay with her aunties instead of her parents. She’d tried to figure it out, but she apparently wasn’t Killian, so she didn’t manage it all that well. Eventually, she was sure, she’d have answers. Hopefully they’d help make sense of everything. Until then, she’d just have to find a way around the uncertainty that seemed to be clinging to her.
Usagi rubbed her eyes, yawning loud as she walked through the park. Really, anywhere that was without school and studying and eeeugh… She rubbed her face for a moment before spying a blonde on a bench. She frowned, deeply. The girl didn’t look that happy, sure, there was a smile, but… Usagi shook her head. Her gut said the girl was sad. And that was enough for the bunhead. She jogged up toward Aurora, her mini skirt bouncing and her tanktop wooshing around her before she skidded to a stop in front of the other girl.
“Want to go buy icecream with me?” she asked abruptly, pointing to the vendor just down the path.
Aurora, who hadn’t been expecting to have anyone talk to her, startled. The confusion was obvious on her face as she stared up at the girl. But then she remembered that it was rude to stare. She did a lot of staring in her dreams, but it was only here that she really thought about it. Then again, she was only five in her dreams at the moment. It couldn’t really be helped.
“Oh. Um. Sure.” She followed the direction that the other girl’s finger was pointing before carefully standing up and smoothing the front of her dress down. “Ice cream sounds really nice, actually.” The smile she offered was weak, but it was truer than the one that she’d just been giving. Maybe it would be nice to do something as simple as getting ice cream with someone who sort of seemed to be her age. “I’m Aurora,” she said after a moment.
Usagi took Aurora’s hand without asking, pulling her along. “I’m Usa--” she stopped, let out a squeal and spun to stare at the other. “From the net! Aren’t you?” She let go of her hand to start bouncing around her excitedly. She stopped in front of Aurora and stuck her hands above her head like ears--or horns. “The horned lady dream! You had it, right?!”
Aurora paused, finding herself staring again before she nodded. “Yes. From the net. I guess there’s no point in asking if that means you’re there, too. You wouldn’t have recognized me otherwise.” She smiled a little. “But yes. The horned lady dream was my dream.” Sometimes she still wondered what their connection was and what was in store for them in the future. Would she still be around like Aurora had assumed? Would she disappear? Aurora hoped that she stuck around. Especially when she was so obviously her Fairy Godmother. No matter what Logan said. She was sure that the woman was exactly that.
Usagi smiled at her widely. “I’m Usagi, the weird loud happy girl on it. We talked!” She squeezed her hands. “How come you’re feeling down?”
Aurora smiled back. “You’re not weird. Being happy is a good thing. Usually I’m like that, too. Sort of.” She was optimistic and good and the sort of people grumpy people side-eyed and tilted their heads at. It was only until Usagi asked that she realized she hadn’t talked to anyone about it since Killian told her. She hadn’t even told Logan. She’d just kept it all bottled up inside and stewed in it. Her smile dimmed at that, slowly turning into a frown. “I just...I found out something recently,” she started, a prickling feeling at the back of her eyes warning her that she was close to tears. “The people I’ve trusted all my life have been lying to me about something important. I guess it’s the first time that I’ve ever had a reason to doubt anyone, so it’s just…” She trailed off, gesturing vaguely.
“Let’s get icecream, it always helps me when I feel down,” Usagi said soothingly, taking Aurora’s hand again as she led her over to the stand. They waited in line, and when Usagi got to the front, she ordered as many scoops as she could on TWO cones. TWO! She turned to smile at Aurora. “I’m paying for you, so whatever you want!”
Aurora felt a little more happiness starting to seep into her. It was nice to have someone else to be happy for a little bit. Once she was back to herself, she’d return the favor. Staring at the ice cream flavors. When she stepped forward, she asked for two scoops of strawberry. She liked the places where you could get the strawberry ice cream with bits of fruit in it. She also liked pistachio. But pistachio and strawberry didn’t go together at all. Turning to Usagi, she smiled. “Thank you. I know we don’t really know each other, but...thanks.”
Usagi shook her head, ushering the other girl to a bench not far from where they were. “No way, don’t thank me. I hate seeing pretty girls looking sad,” she smiled wide at Aurora. “Do you like to come to parks a lot? I think they’re pretty!”
Aurora’s face felt hot. She’d really never considered herself pretty. She knew that she could smile and get people to do what she wanted for the most part, but she still felt strange when people commented on her looks. “I do like parks. I like gardens, too. Like the botanical gardens! Anything to do with horticulture is probably somewhere I’m likely to be.” She pulled her hair over one shoulder, smile a little stronger now. “I want to go to school for horticulture. When I’m older and not stuck in high school. I might take classes at the college next year to get started.”
“Ugh!” Usagi groaned, playfully. She finished one cone--how?!--and began on the other. “I’m almost done with highschool… I want to be done nooow.” She kicked at the ground a bit. “You’ll be going to college for plant stuff then?” she asked, tapping her chin in thought. “Mmmm…. Nope, I’d probably somehow kill all the poor flowers,” she laughed.
Aurora found herself smiling a little again. “I only have a year after this. I’m actually going to be seventeen this month.” She was still settling her plans for her birthday, but she’d gone with what Killian had suggested. A birthday party at one of the many gardens around the OC. She’d contacted a few places already, pretending to be one of her aunties. She had a feeling it wouldn’t get her into any trouble. Especially not if she asked them why they’d hid her parents’ lack of death from her. “But yes. I want to go to college for horticulture.” Her smile widened just a little. “You might be okay with succulents. They’re pretty hardy. All things considered.”
“Happy early birthday!” Usagi cried, smiling wide. “Mine’s in two months! Then I’ll be eighteen.” She slumped slightly. “And college.” She shook her head. “I’m sure you’ll be wonderful at it!”
“Thanks. I'll let you know when my birthday party is. I'm mostly planning it myself. I have a few friends from Valarnet coming and some school friends.” When Usagi mentioned her birthday was coming up, she smiled. “It's probably a little early to say happy early birthday.” She lightly pat her on the back. “I'm sure you'll be wonderful at college too, if that's what you want to do.”
Usagi nodded. “I’m going to see if there’s anything that catches my interest.” She smiled more though, looking at Aurora proudly. “I took your mind off the sad.”
“I’m sure there’s something. If there isn’t, that’s okay.” Because Aurora would always be a little more optimistic than others. She could do something amazing. Everyone could. When Usagi spoke again, Aurora noticed that she’d started to think optimistically again and she nodded. “You did. I guess I might get caught up in it again, later, but it’s nice to have something else to focus on. At least for a little while.”
“Whatever made you sad… it’ll be okay.” Usagi smiled. “It’ll all be okay!” She stretched, letting out a happy sigh. “It’s so nice today.”
Aurora wanted to believe that. She desperately did. But there was a chance it wouldn’t and she was terrified of that. She was terrified that her parents weren’t going to want her after all this time or that they were going to tell her that they had given her up because they’d never wanted kids and still didn’t want them. “I hope so,” she said, voice quiet. “I’m not really sure if it will. Someone’s looking into it for me.” She turned to look at Usagi. “But I’m glad that I ran into you today. Do you want to go look at some flowers with me sometime? There’s a lot of botanical gardens around.”
Usagi smiled wide, nodding repeatedly. “Yeah! I’d love that!” She squeaked excitedly. “You name the day and we’ll go!”
