It was still a little hard for Percy to believe that he might possibly have found some family from his father’s side. He’d grown up never knowing who his father was and while he had wondered had various times in his life, he’d never asked his mother too much about him. He hadn’t told Sally or Paul about Nico and his family yet, because he wanted to be sure before he said anything. If it turned out that he and Nico were in fact cousins then his next step would be telling Hazel and probably their father and then he’d most likely reach out to Thalia, because if her father was Zeus, the bother of Hades and Poseidon then it was likely that she too was his cousin.
He and Nico had sent away for the DNA test a couple of weeks earlier and after sending back their samples had had to wait, however long it would take to get the results. Percy had begun to wonder just how long it would take for them to come in when Nico had finally texted him to let him know and now he was pulling up to Nico’s house and parking his car.
***
Nico would have been lying if he said he hadn't been tempted to just open it up and read the results while waiting for Percy to get there but he'd waited, using the time to do some reading for school. Anything to keep his mind busy. He wasn't sure whether he wanted the results to be yes they were related or no they weren't. It could go either way really - he knew nothing about his father's family when it came down to it. He knew he had an uncle but he'd never met him or even heard his name. Hades wasn't close to his brother and Nico had never really cared to ask.
He heard the knock on the door and stood up to answer it telling the dogs to stay. “I got it!” he shouted over his shoulder. “Hey. I won't lie - it's been tempting to open it. Any clue which way you're hoping this goes?”
***
As Nico answered the door, Percy said hi then followed the other demi-god into the house, “I guess I wouldn’t blame you if you did. I mean, its got to be sitting there like the tell tale heart, just saying open me.” Percy wouldn’t have blamed Nico if he had opened the results without him, but he was glad that he had waited, “Honestly? I’m hoping it’s yes. I...I’ve never had any other family besides my mom and now Paul, so I welcome new family.” His grandparents had died when he was a baby so it had always ever only been him and Sally.
***
“I’ve been keeping myself busy with schoolwork and Cesare. He's a handful when he wants attention. Which is constantly when I'm home,” he said with a grin as they went in the living room and his little greyhound came over to him. “Percy meet Cesare. My best friend since my parents bought him for me. Cesare this is my friend Percy. He will not give you hot dogs,” he said picking the dog up and rubbing his side.
“New family can be exciting. And confusing. But I'm hoping it's yes. We could use some more boys in the family I think. But I have to tell you - I don't know anything about dad's family other than he has a brother named Zeus. So we'll be figuring it all out together.”
***Percy followed Nico into the living room and glanced down as the dog came running over, “I always wanted a dog, but my mom didn’t trust that I’d take it out. Especially since we lived in an apartment building back in New York.” He nodded in response to what Nico said, “Yeah, I don’t know anything about my dad’s family either. I mean, I don’t even know who my father is. I’ve never really asked my mom too much about him.”
***
“Cesare was a bribe sort of to make living here easier for me. He's sweet. You can pet him if you want. Warning he might not let you stop if you start though.” He said with a grin as the dog started trying to lick his face. “And easier to hold and deal with than Cerberus.” He led Percy over to the couch and sat down, Cesare stretching out beside him.
“It could be Uncle Zeus? Or any clue from your dreams?” He grabbed the envelope from where he'd been using it as a bookmark and handed it over to Percy. “Moment of truth if you want to do the honors.”
***
“I wish my mom would bribe me with a dog. I’ve always wanted one,” Percy smirked as he watched the dog trying to lick Nico’s face, “I’m guessing that means Cerberus isn’t the cute little puppy that your dad posted a picture of a while back.” That had been the first time he’d talked to his possible uncle.
He thought for a moment before shaking his head, “I doubt it’s Zeus. It’s most likely the real world’s version of Poseidon. I mean, it’s possible that your dad and Hades have another brother that they don’t know about. That sort of thing happens a lot, right?” Percy stared at the envelope in Nico’s hand for a moment before reaching for it and only hesitated another moment before ripping it open and taking the sheet of paper out.
***
“Well anytime you want feel free to come visit Cesare. He’ll happily take another person’s attention. Just - don’t feed him hot dogs. That’s Sans bonding activity with him.” Nico said. “Cerberus is definitely a lot bigger than he was in that picture. I still think he’s pretty cute but it’s easier to cuddle Cesare. And don’t tell my Dad I said this but - he drools a lot less than Cerberus.” He added. Okay he might have been a little biased towards his dog.
“In our family? Yeah. It happens.” Nico said, watching as Percy opened the envelope. “I didn’t know about Hazel until after we moved here so...What’s it say?” He asked, his nerves showing in the slight tremble in his voice as he fought the urge to take the paper from his friend.
***
Percy laughed and nodded, “Thanks. I’ll be sure not to bring him hot dogs.” Percy could totally understand how Cesare might drool less than Cerberus, considering Cerberus had three heads and Cesare only had one.
He read the paper twice before he looked up at Nico, “According to this, we most likely are related.” Cousins shared less DNA than parents or siblings, but according to their results, Percy and Nico shared enough for a confirmed match.
***
It took a minute for Percy’s words to actually sink in and become real and then he grinned as he reached out and took the paper, reading the words for himself before looking up. “Welcome to the family. We’re a little crazy at times but - it’s family.” He would have to figure out a way to tell his dad. A cousin. And it was a friend of his already.
California was definitely a weird place to live, full of things he’d really never expected to be dealing with but unlike most of it - finding out he had a cousin was a good thing.
***
It was a crazy thing to think; that he would find a cousin he never knew about, but it also didn’t surprise him completely. He’d always assumed that he had family out there somewhere, considering he didn’t know anything about his father. The fact that he already knew Nico made this whole thing even better, “Telling your dad is going to be interesting for sure.”
***
Nico gave a little laugh as he leaned back on the couch. “Oh yeah. I’m going to have to figure out the best way to tell him that. Pretty sure that it’s through his side because mom’s family - they don’t have any unknown kids or siblings. Plus - you don’t really look like anybody on her side. No offense. It might be best to tell him away from the house - somewhere in public.” Somewhere his dad couldn’t go all flamehead at finding out he wasn’t the only one who kept kids a secret. Family traits were definitely surprising at times.
***
Percy nodded, “Yeah, I’m probably one of the least Italian looking people in the world,” That definitely ruled out Nico’s mother’s side of the family and considering the way real life imitated the dreams, he hadn’t really questioned which side of the family they were related on. “Let me know when you tell him and if he wants to meet me. I don’t want to assume that he does. For all we know, it might be too weird for him.”
***
Nico pretended to check his new cousin out before nodding in agreement with him. “Yeah. You’re pretty much the All-American guy. But just think how much people will be surprised when we tell them we’re cousins. Because - I’m telling people. After I tell Dad.” He looked down at Cesare for a minute, rubbing the small dog’s side. “Dad’s probably going to want to meet you. I know he seems kind of scary at times but - he’s not. And when you two meet if you want I can be there.” He said, looking back up. “But I will definitely tell you after I tell him. That’s a promise.”
***
Percy laughed and nodded, “Yeah, let me know how that goes. Hopefully meeting him goes better than it did in the dreams,” After all, in the dreams he had barely made it out of The Underworld after meeting Hades. “I wonder if this means we’re related to Thalia too.” He’d have to send her a text; Hazel too. He and Hazel had only talked a few times, but since he and Nico now knew that they were related, that meant he and Hazel were too.
***
“I’m kind of curious how it went in the dreams now. Guess I’ll probably find it out for myself when I get there in them though.” Nico said, petting Cesare without thinking about it. “Thalia...Grace?” He’d run into her a few months back out shopping at Best Buy. “At this point - I’m considering starting to just assume I’m related to everyone that mentions the Greek gods showing up in their dreams.”
***
Percy nodded, “Yup, that Thalia.” So far Nico, Hazel and Thalia were the only ones he knew of who were children of either Zeus or Hades, but then again, weren’t all the Greek gods related in some way? If he really thought about it, he was also related to Annabeth. But he didn’t want to think of that.
“So, are you hungry? I mean, we should probably get to know each other, right? I’ll pay for a pizza.” Unless he’d been reading Nico wrong this entire time, he had a feeling that the other boy felt the same.
***
“I don’t know her that well but if she is - I’ll get a chance to fix it. You know Annabeth is going to freak probably right? I want to be there when you tell her,” Nico said grinning. He was going to have to tell Will but he figured he’d have some time on that. And telling his dad was way more important.
“Pizza sounds great. And we should definitely get to know each other. There’s this place we order from a lot the menu should be right...here,” he said twisting to grab the menu and hand it to his cousin. “Order whatever you want. I’m going to take the dogs out real quick and feed them so they don’t destroy us. Or steal the pizza. I’ll be back.” He said, standing up and heading towards the door, calling their dogs over his shoulder as he opened it and stepped outside.
