“We are very much ahead of everywhere I’ve checked out so far” Constance said as she sat in Anne’s office opposite her friend and boss, “The things we offer as standard are added extras in most places and I think we’ll be drawing in the right level of clientele with our prices” Everything was going well but you could never afford to rest on your laurels, they needed to ensure their standards were maintained.
“And I finally have a night team leader for the room staff so I don’t have to be on call quite as much” she grinned.
“That is excellent news, I know you've been working really hard for the past few months,” Anne smiled at her friend before clicking on something on her computer to check out the occupancy for the next few days. “And it looks like it's paying off, about 75% occupancy this week,” she sat back in her chair and breathed a deep sigh. Smiling at Constance, she tilted her head before asking her a question. “Are you ok? Anything I can do to help with anything?” she asked curiously. Anne knew she spent a lot of time in her office and speaking with stakeholders and she wanted to show that she was still present and involved in the front of house side of things, but it was difficult.
Constance waved it off, “It’s fine. We knew the first few months would mean a little extra work while we got things settled” she said before smiling, “That’s good. We might even get a few last minute bookings too with it being close to Easter” She nodded at the question, “I’m fine. Nothing I can’t handle so far but I promise to let you know”
“Ok, well you know I'm here and willing to help out,” Anne replied, dropping her eyes as she played with a pen on her desk. “It's not like I'm royalty or anything,” she couldn't help the little smile on her face so tilted her face a little to look up at Constance from under her lashes.
Before Constance could say anything Anne continued and Constance smirked, “Not at all, only the Queen of France” she replied before chuckling, “I was wondering if I should call you ‘Your majesty’ soon” she added cheekily.
“You wouldn't be the first, I ran into Athos in a coffee shop queue a few months ago and he called me that without thinking about it,” Anne laughed, settling back into her chair again. “This is so bizarre! I thought I was crazy when I had my first couple of Dreams but...The fact that you and Athos have them too is so incredible!” she shook her head in amazement.
“And bloody weird” Constance added, “I do have to admit though they’re kind of fun. What’s Athos like? He’s nice in my dreams, comes off as grumpy but has such a good heart. I don’t know you as well, obviously since I’m just a commoner” she grinned, “Nowhere near the lofty heights of royalty”
Anne couldn’t help but chuckle at her friend’s turn of phrase. Constance was always a bit more...direct with her words. “Athos is very nice here, perhaps a bit more affable than in the Dreams? I said to him last we met, that we should have a dinner or something all together, what do you think?” she asked. “Nothing like a palace dinner obviously,” she winked at Constance.
“I’d hope not, far too stuffy for me” Constance winked back, “But yeah I think that would be nice. It’d be good to see what they’re like here, I think we’d all get along well” After all they did in the dreams, though here there would be no affair with D’Artagnan of course. Constance would soon break any awkwardness from that with a joke or two.
Anne grinned at Constance. “I don’t know, I have a feeling you could fit in quite well. I’d want you there anyway,” she told her friend. “Great, then I’ll contact Athos and set something up. Should be easier now that you don’t have to worry about the night shift too much anymore. Have you got any dates you can’t do?” she asked.
Constance chuckled, “Well it’d be a shock for most of them I’m sure” she said, imagining the faces of the palace gentry. “Not that I can think of, it’s not like my nights are spent doing too many interesting things” she winked, “Though that could change now I have them back”
“Oh I see, are you planning on becoming a bit of a party girl now you’ve got some more free time,” Anne winked at her friend, knowing that she was probably just looking forward to curling up with a new book.
“You know me out on the piss every night, dancing shoes on, make up done wearing my little black dress” Constance laughed, because they both knew she was not that kind of girl at all. She hated heels and beyond foundation and mascara didn’t own much make up. Books and quiet meals out with friends were much more her thing, always had been which is why she and Anne got along so well. They both had different interests but there were some things they bonded over and avoiding nightclubs was one of them.
“Yeah, that sounds right up your alley,” Anne chuckled and pushed back in her seat. “Fancy getting a cuppa and discussing the next book we’re going to read?” she grinned and grabbed her handbag.
“That sounds like the best idea ever” Constance agreed grabbing her own bag as she stood to follow Anne to the cafe.
