Athos was pleased with how well Irisa was doing with her training, it freed D’Artagnan up to do things which didn’t need the both of them and Athos couldn’t deny he liked the training aspect of it. He missed his CIA trainer days sometimes, it had been very satisfying to watch his students become agents thanks in part to his training.
“Surveillance is the most laborious part of the job, the bit I never make D’Artagnan do anymore” he added with a smirk, offering her a mint from the bag he had in his hand. They’d been tailing their latest mark when he went into a coffee shop, where he’d been for over 30 minutes now. He’d set his laptop up and didn’t look like he was planning on leaving anytime soon.
“So you make me do it instead?” Irisa asked, quirking a look up at him as she took a mint from him. “Thanks,” she grinned, popping the mint in her mouth and settling herself lower in the seat as they watched him. She was tempted to put her feet up on the dashboard but wasn't sure how far she could push Athos’ good mood. “And now we wait for him to go somewhere or do something interesting You know we could get this information quicker if you left me alone with him for ten minutes,” she joked, keeping an incredibly straight face as she did.
“Yep, he’s done plenty and you’re still learning. Aren’t you the lucky one?” he asked her a small smirk pulling at his lips. Feet anywhere they weren’t supposed to be in the car was too much, so it was good she didn’t try. “We could and then we could lose our license and have to go back to a permanently boring job. I don’t know about you but I don’t do nine to five” though he actually couldn’t stop the smile forming completely this time.
Irisa chuckled and looked back at the boring guy being boring in the cafe. “I think I might actually go crazy in a 9 to 5 job and I mean, legitimately crazy and torture all my coworkers,” she laughed, waving her hand categorically in front of her before grumbling. “God this guy is boring! What's he even looking at? Even I don't think I could Google shit for this long,” she groused. “What do you think he's doing?”
“Well at least you know a few interesting torture techniques, that alone could keep you entertained for a while” Athos said straight faced before giving her a small smirk, “Maybe he’s updating his profiles on all the dating websites he’s no doubt on”
Irisa leaned her head back and grinned at Athos’ joke. “Yeah, it's hard work being a lothario,” she sighed, fingers tapping against the side of the car. “You think he uses his own photo? Or a different one? I've heard that people do that for some reason,” she rolled her head to look at him.
“Oh he definitely uses some kind of stock model shot. And I imagine his profiles reek of desperation but he just can’t understand why the girls aren’t flocking to him” Athos said looking back at her with amusement, “I’ve never actually understood the appeal of dating sites” he admitted.
“Yeah, it is weird,” Irisa scrunched up her face at the thought of dating sites. Well, dating in general if she were honest. She’d never really had much interest in boys or girls, or the other way around really. Too intimidated by her probably. “There’s just so much that can be hidden on the internet, so much that can go wrong,” she shrugged.
“Absolutely. You never know who’s controlling the keyboard” Athos agreed, “I’m glad I’m married already. How about you?” he asked her, “Any plans like that or are you steering clear?” he asked, making conversation but also genuinely interested. He knew her well enough to think he knew the answer but still it was good to ask.
“Me?” Irisa all but squeaked, shifting a bit in her seat and keeping her eyes fixed on the dirtbag in the cafe. “I uh...I don’t really...do that sort of thing,” she shrugged. “Never really have. Think I was always too intimidating for people to get to know before, y’know? And now I’ve got a gun...well, I don’t see my social opportunities increasing if you know what I mean,” she joked.
Athos chuckled, “Fair enough” he said with a nod, “Honestly I don’t blame you, it’s a lot easier to not bother with romance and all that. Though you never know something may come up, I definitely didn’t go looking for D’Artagnan but here I am married with a dog”
“Nah,” Irisa looked down, becoming fascinated with the seam of her trousers as she did. “You do know me, right? People don’t...like me I guess,” she shrugged. “Unless they appreciate my fighting skills.”
“I like you” Athos said before rushing to add, “I mean not like that because I’m old enough to be your father but you aren’t unlikeable Irisa. A little prickly maybe to start with but all the best people are” he smiled, knowing they were alike in some ways though Athos had tempered with age over the years.
Irisa quirked a smiled at his words, but kept her eyes forward. “I don’t know how to be anything else but...prickly,” she shrugged. “I just kind of figured I become an old spinster with loads of cats.”
“My advice” he said wanting to lighten their conversation a little and not make her uncomfortable, “is to go with dogs. Much better in my opinion. And a crazy dog lady is far more unique”
Irisa slowly looked up at him with eyebrows raised. She watched him for a few seconds before breaking out into a grin. “Ok, dogs it is,” she nodded.
