Capable had just taken a delivery when Tessa arrived into work, doing a quick book number check against the invoice and happy everything was there she came out of the stock room shutting the door behind her and made her way to Tessa’s office.
“Delivery came, I’ll start the put away in a bit” she said, knowing Tessa had gotten them goodies from Baxter’s to have while they had their chat.
“That's excellent Capable, thank you very much,” Tessa smiled and set her goodies from the bakery on her desk. She'd already closed the front of the shop with the ‘Gone to lunch’ sign while they had their chat. “Come sit with me and tell me your news,” she patted the back of the chair opposite her own and sat down on her own. “I hope I'm not losing you too,” she voiced her own hidden fear of losing another great employee.
“Oh no, never. I mean I never want to leave. You’d probably have to drag me out if you ever did want to let me go” And she meant it, she adored the bookstore and would always be grateful to Tessa for giving the sheltered somewhat scared girl she’d been a chance at her first ever job. “I just found this course, it’s a storytelling course and it looks amazing but it’s a couple of days a week for a month and I know it would mean rearranging the work rotas but I think it could really benefit the events we hold for the kids and the regular story hours” Capable loved nothing more than the storytime Tessa let her run at weekends and in the holidays and when she’d seen this advertised she knew she needed to get onto it.
“A story telling course?” Tessa gasped excitedly as she looked up at Capable. “How exciting! When does it start? Do you need any help funding it? I could see if I can pay for it through the business if you’d like?” she offered. To Tessa, as well as being an incredible opportunity for the talented girl, it made sense if the store was going to benefit from the training she would contribute to it.
Capable shook her head, “I’d never ask for that” she said not wanting Tessa to think that was the reason behind this, “I have savings, it was more the time I was worried about. I didn’t want to cause a problem with the work schedule that’s all. It starts just after Easter, so it wouldn’t be over the busy period” for that she was grateful since she knew they had a lot of events planned over Easter.
“Capable please, I insist, you have to let me at least contribute towards the course. I wouldn't dream about letting you put your savings towards it, you've worked too hard for them,” Tessa told her calmly but confidently. “And so long as you let me know your schedule we can absolutely cover shifts, don't you worry about that,” she reassured Capable. “This is brilliant! So how did you find out about it?”
Blushing Capable smiled, “Thank you Tessa, you really are the best boss anybody could hope for” she said honestly, she’d been lucky to find someone so supportive and who was such a good friend too. “I can let you know everything” she said, “They send you the schedule as soon as you sign up so as soon as I do that I can give you everything you need to know. Actually one of the parents let me know about it. She thought it would be something I’d enjoy” She’d also said Capable was a natural storyteller but she didn’t add that bit.
“For all your help with the store, it’s the least I can do,” Tessa reassured her friend, pushing her drink towards her. “That was kind of them, you’ll have to point out who it was next time they’re in. I’d like to thank them myself,” she smiled, picking up her tea and taking a sip.
Taking the drink gratefully Capable sipped it, “I like the things we come up with. It definitely helps us be part of the community and helping children find such enjoyment in books is something I never imagined I could be part of” she admitted, after all she’d had limited books as she was growing up. “I will” she promised, “They come every weekend”
“You’ve come such a long way Capable and it’s all down to your own dedication and resilience. You took an opportunity, embraced it with both hands and made it your own,” Tessa told her confidently. “I’m glad people are showing their appreciation of you and giving you more opportunities,” she grinned, reaching into the bag on the table to pull out her iced bun to nibble on. “Speaking of which, what do you think we should aim to do next? If we think now then we can plan around your schedule and see if we need any extra hands on deck,” she sat back and took a bite of her iced bun.
Capable blushed deeply at the praise but gave Tessa a bright smile, “Thank you” she said honestly pleased that Tessa was so happy with her and her work. “We’re still doing the little Easter fair over Easter weekend aren’t we? Maybe we could do an egg hunt but with a book twist so like a book hunt I guess” Capable suggested.
“Brilliant idea!,” Tessa considered for a moment. “I was going to suggest we hide clues in the books, but I’m not sure I want loads of people rifling through all the books out there. Might be too much of a risk of damaging the stock…” she winced as she said it to Capable.
“Maybe we can be the clues, and those who are coming to run stalls. Like whoever comes from Baxter’s with cookies to sell can have a clue, Myrcella can have one while she does face painting and that kind of thing. Then the books that are the prizes we can wrap ribbons around so it’s obvious they’re the right ones. It might minimise stock damage” Capable said, luckily most of the kids who were regulars were careful but there was always one or two who got over excited.
“I love that idea! Encouraging kids to talk about to people about books is one of the best things we could do!” Tessa enthused, putting her iced bun down again and licking her fingers as she thought about the idea some more. “We could give out little pieces of cardboard with clues on, tell them riddles, play a piece of music, so many things! Brilliant Capable! We can ask Will and Jem if they wouldn’t mind helping out too. We could also put a post on the Net to see if there’s any others who might like to bring a stall in, what do you think?”
“I think that’s a great idea” Capable nodded, “I bet there are all kinds of people who’d like to be involved. And we already have a good reputation with the local businesses” Between them Tessa and Capable always managed to hit on the good solid ideas and so far they’d been able to make them all work successfully.
“Fantastic! Oh this is going to be so much fun!” Tessa grinned, all but bouncing in her seat. “Did you want to post on the Net for me and I’ll speak to Will and Jem about helping out?” she asked, reaching for her phone out of her handbag.
Capable nodded, “Yeah I can do that” she said in agreement, “This is going to be amazing” she enthused with a happy smile.
