Gaila had shut the bar down for the night, sending everyone home to give them a break, and give her a chance to a) accept that this all was really happening and b) assess where things were going with the place. She was also waiting on Uhura, and fighting a wave of mopiness. Maybe she needed chocolate.
Uhura was worried about her friend despite Gaila's assurances that she was fine. It didn't help that everything and everyone seemed to be going haywire lately. It didn't take her long to get to the bar and find her way inside. It was empty, which Uhura had never seen before. "Gaila?" she asked.
Gaila looked up from where she had bee sitting on a bar, nursing a glass of whiskey, "Hey Nyota!" They were alone, she felt like it was okay. Right? She hopped off the bar and thrust a glass into her friend's hand, "What do you think?"
The painting on the former hall of fame wall was done. It was now an Irish countryside from floor to ceiling. The lighting was a bit brighter and everything looked...clean.
Gaila couldn't really take in her surroundings when Gaila looked so green and sick. She took the drink in one hand and put her other hand on Gaila's shoulder. "You look so green, Gaila. Are you sure you're not sick?" she asked.
She stared at Uhura, "I'm green to you? You're seeing that?" She looked around as if trying to decide if Uhura is looking at her or someone else, even if they were alone.
"Yeah, I had a doctor check it out but I was fine...and it all started after those dreams."
"Yeah, you're kind of Green, Gaila," Uhura replied, trying to figure out what was going on here. She'd have to tell Spock about this. "You think this has something to do with those dreams? But how?"
"I'm green, all over." Gaila knocked back her own glass and then refilled it, "I'm green in all of them. Every one. Always green. Its like it bled over and made me green in the waking world."
That's not possible, Uhura wanted to say, but there was a green Gaila staring back at her. "What do you dream about? Spock told me about the ones you shared with him, but there were some things you didn't want to share with him. Gaila, is it bad?" She was beginning to fear that the dream world really was going to take over their waking world.
"It's...bad." She took a long swig, "I don't want you telling him this, okay? The only other person I told was Scotty and that was hard enough." And she was still irritated at him, irrationally so.
"Alright," Uhura nodded. If it was that bad then she could keep a secret. She moved to actually sit down at the bar so she could listen. She took a long drink first though because she though she might need it.
Gaila rubbed at her eyebrow, "It was like a coming of age thing. My green not-mom was there, and there were men and women with her and they were...you know. With her. Naked." She waved a hand, not wanting to say it.
Uhura wasn't really sure what she was hearing. Okay, so she knew what she was hearing, but she didn't exactly know how to respond to it. "Oh, Gaila, I'm so sorry," was all she could really get out. But sorry for what? That she had a bad dream or something more?
"Its just a dream." She topped off their drinks, "But it gets worse. The other girls and me - there are like a dozen of us. It gets to be our turn. Its like this..horrible cultural thing. Its normal to everyone. But its .." she shuddered.
"In the dream I'm scared. But I've been expecting this. Preparing for it, training for it. So that makes it less scary."
Uhura let out a deep sigh and then took a drink to buy herself some more time. "I hate to say it because what I'm about to say is really awful if what everything you say is true, but.. if it's just a dream then why is your skins turning green?"
"I believe in like...Lucid dreams, and shared dreams and everything but this is...I don't know. Maybe I was molested as a kid, but you'd think I'd remember that. My mom was a prude."
She sipped her drink, "Have you...gotten anything? Like things that just showed up. Like Kirk's car and model."
"Have you thought about going to a therapist or a dream specialist? I've been talking to my therapist at work," who Uhura was required to see by the FBI as part of her 'punishment' "..and she thinks I'm completely crazy, but saying that kind of thing at the FBI is bad news. You might have more luck with it." (more)
"No," Uhura shook her head. "Nothing has shown up for me, but I keep having the same dreams over and over and over again. It's starting to drive me a little crazy."
"Oh yeah, 'hey I think I'm green and half the people I know can see me as green!'" Gaila shook her head, "No shrinks. And they wouldn't explain some of the ..things."
This was way better than talking about her tiff with Scotty. She pulled her padd out of her purse, and offered it to Uhura, "There was this when I woke up one morning. Here, just play with it and you'll see its lightyears beyond anything on the market. Or anything that should be possible. And this isn't even the COOL thing."
Also, talking about all this made her feel better. Maybe she WOULD tell Spock.
Uhura made a face when Gaila denied her shrink idea. Her friend was right, but she didn't want to admit it. She could probablly never tell a shrink about the green thing, but the dreams? They could help with that.
Uhura took the pad from Gaila and looked it over, playing with it's features. "What's the cool thing?" she asked.
"A super computer." She tapped on the padd, "This thing links into it. It can calculate PI to a ridiculous number, and quickly. Some of the stuff Scotty puts into it makes no sense to me, but the computer figures it out. Her voice is also kinda hot."
Another drink! "The fucked up thing is it won't tell us anything. I mean I can look up all kinds of things from like..now. But it has petabytes and petabytes of data just locked away. It feels like we're one password shy of information that could change the world."
Uhura placed the pad down and rubbed her hands over her face. She really couldn't believe this was all happening. She had been holding proof in her hands that their dreams were real. She was convinced of it, even if no one else was. It was the only logical explanation. There was no use arguing it though.
"This is a lot," Uhura said finally, dropping her hands from her face. "Why haven't you told me about this sooner?"
"I thought you'd think I was nuts!" Then she eyedarted, "And I was feeling a bit selfish.."
"Well, you are nuts," Uhura replied. "But not the way you mean. Why did you feel selfish?"
"I wanted it to myself," She admitted. "I didn't even enjoy showing it to Scotty but I felt like..it would help with the space thing. Like we really really want to go into space." Gaila poured them more drink, and then took Uhura's arm and guided them so they could sit at a booth.
Uhura followed Gaila to a booth and slid in easily across from her friend. "I think we all have to stick together through this until we all figure out what's going on here," she replied with a shrug. "I get the whole wanting to keep it to yourself thing though. I'm the same way with.. pretty much everything. I don't like sharing."
"Do you think we're aliens? Maybe we're aliens. Or cyborgs, like in that one show." She reached over and put a hand over Uhura's, "You're a private person. Way more private than me. And you have a much cooler day job."
"I don't know. Maybe?" Uhura admitted. "I have to admit the thought of us all being aliens has crossed my mind." Stupid honesty. "Yeah, now if only I could get back into the LA branch. I think I pretty much shot my change at that though. My therapist will make a full report and I'm sure she thinks I'm crazy."
"What if that report went missing?" Gaila leaned forward, "I know a hacker. Okay she wouldn't ever actually do it, but maybe I can grab some of her tools. Or blackmail her."
She couldn't believe she was even suggesting this.
"Gaila, that's illegal," Uhura said flatly.
"I know! I know, but you're NOT crazy!" She didn't even know why Nyota had been reassigned, but she definitely knew the woman wasn't crazy.
Uhura shrugged. "I don't know what I am anymore," she admitted. "Maybe I am crazy. Maybe we're all collectively getting the same crazy."
Gaila pinched her own arm, "Green! Unless I painted myself in my sleep?"
"But we're the only people who can see it!" Uhura countered.
Gaila chewed on her lip, "McCoy can see it. Scotty. You. Faiza did..."
Uhura shook her head. "I don't know what the answer is to all of this, Gaila. Maybe there isn't an answer, as much as I hate to say that."
Gaila leaned her chin on her hands, pouting, "So we're collectively losing our minds? Today sucks."
"Yeah, it does," Uhura admitted before finishing off her drink. She was starting to feel a bit buzzed now, and she was thankful for that. It numbed everything.
"You know.....I never really thought I'd own this place. Or any place. I just wanted to get to a place in life where I can program." Gaila stared down into her drink, "Scotty keeps making me go to bed instead of play around when I get home. I mean he's right, I need sleep, but I need the....Programming is like sex for me. Its relaxing, its fun."
"Do you even want this place?" Uhura asked, finally taking a look around. "It looks really good in here, but if it's not what you want you shouldn't be doing all this."
"I don't not want it." Gaila looked around, "I'm excited. I guess I hadn't realized how much work it would be."
"Do you have any help? And Scotty doesn't count. I think he just adds more work."
Gaila laughed, "So much! But yeah I have some help. I'm paying one guy in food and coffee, and some of the patrons are helping out. I hired a woman to help me organize things and that took a huge load off my back."
"Things will get easier then," Uhura replied. "It's just going to be hard at first as you get your feet on the ground, you know? I'm sure it will all fall into place soon."
"Are you sure about that?" She took a deep breath, "Scotty found some kid genius to help him anyway. This'll work out."
"Yeah," Uhura nodded. "I'm sure."
