“She looks like she’s been put through hell.” The TARDIS had helpfully provided Kirk with a window as they approached the Enterprise. He’d gotten the distress call shortly after the Reapers had been destroyed. That Citadel thing of Shepard’s had been huge, and impressive and while he wondered what would become of it, he was more focused on the ship adrift in front of them.
There were hull breaches on several decks and battle damage to one nacelle. Worse damage than anything he’d ever dreamed of yet and he hoped he never got to see her look like that. But otherwise, she looked exactly as he’d dreamed of her, down to the domed Nacelles and everything.
The TARDIS had also noticed a strange ship floating in space in distress. Even if it wasn’t an offensive ship, there was still that need for defence and so picking up on different ships? Not so far from the realm of possibility. So when Jim had asked to go out and find the Enterprise, she’d of course been willing to help.
“Well… we did just deal with an attempted alien invasion. Going through hell is part of it.” Of course it was hard to say if it was just from the Reapers or something else, but that was something that had just happened and could explain the damage done.
“Where would be the best place to attach?” It was complicated because well, the TARDIS was a bit different from a typical ship but Jim would know where they’d be able to land so they could explore the Enterprise as a whole and not just look from afar.
“We should be able to get into the shuttle bay,” He said. That could give them a chance to detour to Main Engineering and make sure nothing was in danger of exploding. The last thing they needed was a warp core breach. “Then… figure things out from there.”
His ship… Jim felt like he was looking at a loved one laying in intensive care.
“Alright.” Heading back to the control room, Clara punched in the coordinates for the shuttle bay so that the TARDIS was able to materialize where needed. The question of course would be life support systems. She had a few space suits just in case. It wouldn’t do them good to enter the Enterprise only for it to be uninhabitable.
Not that it would be a problem for her. But still. She’d rather not accidentally sentence her friend to death as they went to see his ship because they were inadequately prepared.
Jim pulled a tricorder out of his bag, and ran a scan. “Life support is online. There’s oxygen. Engineering will tell us if we can make it to the bridge the easy way or the hard way. The ship is running on emergency power.”
Taking a breath, he stepped out onto the deck. The usual hum of the Enterprise was missing, but it still felt like home. He counted the shuttles while he waited for Clara.
Life support being online was definitely a good thing. Easier to move about, in theory. After all, Jim just mentioned how they would then figure out if they were going to end up going the easy way or the hard way to the bridge. Clara remembered the hard way with the TARDIS, however sentient ship and Time Lord technology. She had a feeling that even the hard way wouldn’t be like that particular dream.
“Got it.” Grabbing some torches, as well as making sure the TARDIS stayed in place (no signs of danger so it wasn’t like it would vanish on them because of preservation protocols), Clara went to join Jim, handing him one of the torches. Light tended to be important in these situations.
For some reason the flashlight felt wrong in his hand. He was used to a different kind of light when on the Enterprise. He had to shake himself back to the present.
The bright red doors out of the bay had to be forced open.Like the shuttle bay, the corridors were deserted. Unfortunately, Engineering was locked down. “Just what I always wanted, to climb through a Jefferies Tube.” Jim hooked the flashlight into his belt and opened the hatch, setting it aside.
Hopefully Clara enjoyed the view when he climbed in.
Emergency lights lit up engineering, and he shined the light towards the warp core. Nothing looked damaged, and a quick scan confirmed that fact. “The engines seem okay. Won’t know for sure until I run a diagnostic.”
He pointed at one console. “I need you to hit that when I tell you to. Red knob, right side.”
There was always that confusion, being here but also remembering how things felt in the dreams. Clara had found her TARDIS is mostly working order the previous year when Orange County turned into the Hunger Games. It had been together enough to protect from the Mutts. Even so, she’d been acting solely on instinct. That, and it wasn’t like the time period was different. Yes time travelling, but as a whole, it was all familiar and relatively current.
With it seeming that they were going to be climbing through tubes, Clara hooked her torch and followed after Jim. Much less uncomfortable than crawling around the inside of a Dalek. Still, at least there were emergency lights and the engines seeming to be okay.
“Right, ready when you are.”
“Ready…” Jim entered in some commands, his fingers moving rapidly over the console. “Press it now!”
That would reignite the core and return power to the Enterprise. A familiar, almost happy hum. At least, happy to Kirk’s ears.
And once she was given the order, Clara did as needed, looking around as the hum started and power was restored. Well that was a good sign. Unsurprising, but still she was used to things finding a way to go wrong, so the fact that it worked? Always a good thing.
Readouts displayed on a screen, and Jim finally relaxed. “The core is stable. Forcefields and emergency bulkheads are closing off the exposed areas, it looks like the turbolift to the bridge isn’t being blocked. I’m not reading any life signs, but there are no bodies.”
He smiled at Clara. “Let’s go take a look.”
All of that was good to hear. Especially the lack of bodies. Wouldn’t that be something, find a ship in space and there are bodies on it. The thought was unpleasant to say the least. Returning the smile, the petite brunette nodded.
“Definitely.” Because they were there, clearly things were in order. Obviously the next step was to take a look around.
No crew meant no bodies, but no crew also meant it was going to be a lot harder to get the Enterprise repaired. For now, he needed to stabilize the orbit. It would suck to gouge a hole in the moon or something. He grinned at her as they headed to the turbolift. “Remind me to get you a uniform. Red would suit you.”
Clara bit back the comment that those in red usually died in Star Trek. Yes there had been the awkward moment of Jim recognizing George Takei thanks to Allegiance and all, but they never really went into the fictional thing and she wasn’t about to mention it now. Instead she just shrugged.
“I do look good in red.” She even had the Oswin dress with the tool belt which probably would have come in handy at the moment. Oh well. There was always another time since it was clear this would be a project to get the Enterprise up and running again.
Grabbing the handle, Kirk ordered the turbolift to the bridge. His heart did flips in his chest, and then the lift stopped and the doors opened. The familiar ping of bridge background noise, the viewscreen showing the stars and the moon, the bright colors of the consoles. The chair.
He stepped in, looking around, running his hand along one console. “Thanks. For helping me get here.” It was a moment, one he was glad to share with Clara.
Clara was well familiar with blokes and their space ships, so she hung back and just looked around the Enterprise for a bit. There was something to be said for actually being on the ship instead of just seeing it on the screen.
“Anytime.”
