Who: James and Kurt Hummel
What: A Date
Where: A really expensive restaurant
When: Backdated to February
Rating: Family Friendly
Status: Complete
James had the tickets he wanted, which were actually quite hard to get, but he also had a few connections in theater. It was nice to have the right friends at the right time. As sweet and unassuming as James could be, he was actually quite good in his business, making friends with the right people who kept him working. Those people were useful for things like tickets as well.
He put on a nice ensemble of blues, which would oddly match his hair if it ever changed. Of course, he also debated if it would be too much. No, he decided with another look in the mirror. It was just right. He felt a shot of nerves - the right clothes and the right guy was a perfect combination. Now on to pick up Kurt and present him with the little gift of theater tickets. At least he had forewarned him that they would be going to a show.
He knocked on the door, waiting for the man to answer. He didn’t hear Kurt’s roommate around either. It would be nice if they were out for the evening as well. He leaned against the door frame, but that seemed too dramatic, so he went back to bouncing on the stoop. He hated waiting.
Kurt had spent far more time on his appearance for tonight than he'd like to admit. He was a fashion diva. He always knew exactly what to wear and what other people should wear to ensure they looked their best. But for his date tonight he'd suddenly become indecisive and fashion stupid. His entire wardrobe was currently laying on his bed, the boy having tried on at least ten different outfits. But he couldn't help it. He wanted to look good.
To be honest he wasn't really used to being asked out on dates. It wasn't that he'd never been asked, just that it wasn't something that happened all that often. So he'd been more than a little surprised when James had asked him out, but he was excited at the same time. As they hung out and worked together, he found that he really liked the other boy. James was funny, smart, and they both got excited over a lot of the same things. He was also incredibly handsome.
He'd finally chosen and changed into a crimson colored dress shirt with a black blazer and slacks. He figured it was best to keep it simple for now. Plus the pants looked really good on him. He was just pulling on his shoes when he heard a knock on the door. Pushing down his nervousness the brunette opened the door with a smile.
“Hey!” He said brightly, opening the door wider and stepping aside. “Come on in!”
Kurt looked amazing. There was no other way to say it. James hadn't been on a date in quite some time. He was really looking forward to this. He was actually looking forward to more dates in the future.
"Hi," he said. "You look perfect. I was thinking dinner and a show." He held up two tickets. On closer inspection they were to the new LA production of Rent. "I got them for a steal, and I thought of you immediately." Of course, they had similar tastes, Of course, they had similar tastes, and he had no doubt that they would both enjoy this.
Kurt smiled and felt himself blushing slightly at the others compliment. It was one thing to know you look nice, but hearing it from someone that you like was something else entirely. James looked wonderful as well. Kurt found himself feeling even more nervous. He wasn't used to dating.
“You look amazing” he said with a smile as he grabbed his wallet and keys. Grabbing a pen and paper he jotted down a quick note to his roommate letting him know he would be gone for the evening. Upon seeing the label on the tickets, he gave a bright grin. “Oh wow! I love this show! James, this is perfect!”
“This is an amazing show. I know they changed the cast pretty recently, but I could see this show 400 times and love it every time.” James was excited. There were a few shows like that, but Rent was special. This man was also special. They could really have something. He didn’t want to get ahead of himself, but it really had been so long since he felt a connection to anyone.
He opened the door to his SUV for Kurt. He had a second car, but the SUV held more gear and sometimes he just liked driving it. After putting him inside, he jumped in the driver’s seat. “I made us reservations at Republique.” It was a trendy 5-Star restaurant on La Brea, not far from the theater. James didn’t always go for the high end food, but he could now afford much more for all the time spent working. This was a treat, and he wanted to really give his date something special.
Kurt smiled and thanked the other man as he slid into the passenger seat of James’ SUV. It was probably silly, but he felt so nervous. He was so sure he was going to say or do something to make a fool out himself. Which would be just his luck. Before James hopped into the car he took a deep breath. Everything would be fine.
The name of the restaurant sounded familiar to Kurt but he couldn't quite place it. But there were so many places to eat here. It wasn't like his home town where there were a few diners and fast food joints. But he knew that if James had picked it, it had to be good. They seemed to have to same tastes in a lot of different things.
Kurt was silent for a moment as he thought of something to say. It was unusual because normally he was a really chatty person. But right now his mind was blank. It seemed silly to talk about work since they both worked at the same place. He still owed James for getting him a job there. He found himself loving it and it was easy to balance with school.
“Should we do the silly and awkward get to know you questions?” He asked jokingly as he looked over to his left, giving a playful smile.
“Maybe we should. It’s strange, you know. I don’t really date much. I guess that’s a good thing.” He looked over and touched Kurt’s hand, taking it in his until he needed it again. “I’m glad you are here though. I think we just click, and you look really good.” That was definitely a high compliment. Not that James thought he was absolutely special. He found himself ordinary, and even boring at times, but usually he couldn’t find a voice to speak with. He was really trying.
“So, tell me about you, or things I don’t know. What’s your favorite food, and favorite dessert, and coffee doesn’t count?” He had no idea why he was starting there, but they had already talked of family, and school. He’s start simply, while they waited in traffic.
“I don't date much either,” Kurt admitted, looking down as James slipped his hand in his own. Smiling he laced his fingers with the others lightly. James was right though. The two of them seemed to mesh so well. Kurt was completely comfortable with the other man. That didn't stop him from flushing slightly though when James commented on his looks. “I don't know about that, I'd say you're the good looking one.”
It took Kurt a moment to think of an answer to James question. He liked a lot of different foods and he loved to cook. It was something he got from his mother. Thinking of her, he smiled a bit.
“I'd have to say macaroni and cheese,” he said finally. “It's kind of a comfort food. It's something my mother would make to cheer me up after a bad day.” He added in way of explanation. “For dessert I'd say..tiramisu”
Now it was his turn to ask a question. It was kind of fun, getting to know each other even more than they did already so far. “If money was no object and you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?”
“I love macaroni and cheese, and a really good chicken pot pie. My mom made those, and I didn’t appreciate them until I moved out.” Talking about his family made him miss them, even though they had a few difficult years. “I do love ice cream. I need a lot of that.”
He looked up and smiled, enjoying the evening completely. This was the perfect choice, and a perfect date. He reached over and took Kurt’s hand, thinking about the question. “That is a huge question with so many choices. I want to do it all. I want to go to London and Paris. I want to go to Egypt and see the pyramids, and I want to go to Asia, and Australia. You know what would really be cool? There is this place in Sweden, and it’s a hotel made of ice, like all the furniture and everything. The view of the Northern Lights is supposed to be amazing. I think that would be awesome.” It was also uncommon, which made it even more appealing.
He thought for a moment as they were served their meals. “Actually, the same question to you. If you could go anywhere, money's no object, where would you go?”
Kurt loved the ways James’ eyes seemed to light up when he talked of the places he'd like to visit. He wanted to see the world much like he did. It was just another of the seemingly endless things that they had in common.
“An ice hotel sounds so cold” he laughed as he looked across the table at his date “but the view would probably make it worth it.”
When the question was turned on him, Kurt didn't even have to think about it. “I would love to take a tour of Europe. London, Paris, Rome...I'd love to see it all. I'd also love to see Tokyo. Everything there seems so interesting!”
His next question was a little silly and probably cliche but he still couldn't help himself. “What's something not many people know about you?”
James stiffled a laugh, trying to think of how to answer the question. “I’m a pretty open book.” There had to be something though, didn’t there? “My favorite sport is baseball. I did play in high school. I also wanted to be a cheerleader, but I thought everyone would figure out that I was gay, and in Minnesota that wasn’t really a good thing then.”
“Same question back to you?” He continued to eat, watching his perfect date. His boyfriend. He liked the sound of that so much.
Kurt gave James’ hand a comforting squeeze as he listened. His heart pulled slightly, hearing that this amazing person had to hide who he was. “You would have made an adorable cheerleader” he joked lightly. “Though picturing you in a baseball uniform is pretty cute too,”
“I know a lot about cars,” he answered, laughing a bit. “People are always shocked when they hear it but I can fix cars, rebuild engines...my dad taught me all of it.”
