As usual Derek needed to go for a run. He seemed to be running even more since he completed the transformation. Sometimes he had company. Now that Tyler was human, running was basically the only thing the roommates had in common. “How are you adjusting?” he asked Tyler, because yes Derek could keep up a conversation while running. However, just as he asked their were two other guys running the opposite direction as them, one of which ended up bumping into Tyler as they passed.
Tyler had always enjoyed running, though over the last few months he’d grown used to running as a werewolf. Being able to run effortlessly was nice, and he’d nearly forgotten how much work it was otherwise.
He would never once dream of becoming a werewolf again. The perks in no way outweighed the pain of the transformation, or the worry that he’d get out of his cave someday and hurt someone. His last transformation had taken place out if it, but he’d luckily had Lily’s potion which had stopped him from going on a rampage. But that didn’t mean that he didn’t miss them sometimes. He was just glad that it football was in its off-season right now.
“I’m adjusting,” Tyler said. “I forgot how much effor-” he had been saying, when some jackass plowed into him.
He bit back the retort that the guy should watch where he was going, and was willing to keep going, but apparently the other guy didn’t have Tyler’s patience.
“Hey, watch where you’re going,” the guy snapped, and Tyler turned on his heel to face him.
“Excuse me?” Tyler asked, his eyebrows shooting toward his hairline. “You ran into me.”
“Like hell I did,” the guy snarled back.
Tyler saw red. And really, the guy had it coming. If he didn’t want to be punched in the face, maybe he should have learned some goddamn manners.
Derek could already feel himself sweat at the confrontation between Tyler and the guy. This wasn’t just sweat from the run, it was different. Derek had a bad feeling about what was coming, which only stressed him out even more. “Come on-“ Derek started but it was too late Tyler had already punched the guy and that was it. Derek dropped to the ground on all fours, no longer in control of his body.
Derek falling to the ground broke through Tyler’s rage more than Derek talking to him, and he turned to his friend just in time to get decked in the jaw by the other guy. He nearly whirled back to continue the fight, but he’d gone through enough of his own transformations to recognize when it was happening to someone else, even if it was different in different dreams. Reflexively, Tyler looked up at the sky to make sure it suddenly hadn’t become the night of a full-moon. He knew better - he knew there was no full moon scheduled for a while yet, and he knew that it was still early morning, but he didn’t even notice he was checking the sky.
He turned back to the guys, getting his temper under control.
“Hey, what’s wrong with your friend?” asked the second man, the one who hadn’t nearly been involved with the fight.
“Get out of here,” Tyler growled, not answering him. When the guys didn’t seem to be moving, staring at Derek instead with rapt attention, Tyler physically grabbed the bralwer’s shoulder and turned him down the path. “Go!”
There must have been something in his voice, because both the men took off running, and he turned his attention back to Derek, wondering what exactly he was going to do. The smart thing would be to get to safety as soon as possible. He knew Derek’s bite wouldn’t turn him, but he also wasn’t looking forward to getting disemboweled. But there were too many people in the park, and Tyler had to think of a way to make sure that they stayed safe as well.
Unfortunately Tyler came to his senses too late. Derek was already starting to change. In the middle of the park, in daylight. Man, it would be so much easier if a full moon dictated when he would change. Then he would at least be able to prepare for it. He vomitted a few times as his body contorted, clothes ripping off and falling to the ground. His spine shot up, limbs turned into four legs with paws, fur sprouting everywhere. His teeth became razor sharp, nose and mouth transforming intou a wolf’s snout. The only thing that remained the same were his green eyes.
The quickest way to get attacked by a werewolf was to run. A part of Tyler knew that, though the thought of running never actually crossed his mind. He never had been the running type.
Instead, he hunched his shoulders to make himself look imposing, and lips pressed firmly together, he stared the black wolf down. Maybe ‘showing your dominance’ to a werewolf was a bad idea, but it was a better idea than running away with his metaphorical tail between his legs, and it was the thing that came most naturally to him.
There was no reason to be scared. Well other than the fact that Derek had just transformed into a huge wolf. But he was still him. He didn’t lose his thoughts or personality when he changed. Derek wouldn’t hurt anyone… unless they threatened him. He slowly and carefully walked over to Tyler, green eyes glowing.
Tyler swallowed, prepared to stand his ground and assert his dominance, but after a moment, he realized that Derek wasn’t behaving how he expected. He expected growling, lunging, snapping. But Derek’s body language wasn’t showing any signs of aggression.
Slowly, carefully, Tyler squatted down, prepared to spring to his feet at the first sign of an attack, and he extended his hand.
Derek nudged Tyler’s hand with his snout. He had only gone into full wolf form twice. Three times if you counted this time. Chloe hadn't been scared in the slightest but she knew not to be thanks to their dreams. Meg and been wary and it seemed Tyler was too, but he hoped his roommate would realize there was nothing to be afraid of.
Tyler relaxed, and moved his hand to scratch behind Derek’s ears before realizing how weird that was. He withdrew his hand. “Well, that was a whole lot less maiming than I was expecting,” Tyler said, the relief evident in his voice as he straightened back up. “Is that still you in there?” He had to wonder if it was Derek, or if Derek’s canine brain took over as much as Tyler’s did when he transformed. Sure, he remembered the things he did the next day, but he had no control over it in the moment. It was just instinct and blood-lust, though with the wolfsbane potions he took before his transformations the blood-lust seemed to fade. Maybe the same thing happened to Derek, but with more of a tame dog aspect to it.
Derek just nodded his wolf head. Because while he was still Derek, he couldn’t talk. He could bark, growl, howl, or whimper. But almost all of those would probably scare Tyler and anyone else that heard. Maybe, not so much the whimpering, but he had no reason for that. So he just stayed silent.
Tyler let out a heavy sigh of relief, glad that Derek was still Derek. “Well, good,” he said, doing a quick look around to make sure that no one else was around. Luckily, the park seemed pretty empty. “We should get you home before someone calls animal control or something. How long are you supposed to stay like that, anyway?” He immediately wondered why he bothered to ask, since it wasn’t as though Derek could respond.
Derek just nodded his head and began parking back to where they had parked. Luckily they had come together so he didn’t have to worry about leaving his car stranded. As for how long it would last he had no idea. It seemed to vary. Hopefully he’d at least stay in wolf form till they were inside the apartment. Yeah a wolf walking around an apartment was a bid odd, but at least he wouldn’t be naked in public.
