The waitress came back a few minutes later with their food. She’d been a doll and dished everything onto two plates for them, even though they were sharing a meal. Audrey gave her a bright smile and a “thank you” before turning to the food. It was delicious. She lifted her wine glass in a toast to her husband.
“Happy Valentine’s Day, Love.”
“Happy Valentine’s Day” Merlin replied, clinking their glasses together. Impressed by the waitress, they’d have to give her a tip for her helpfulness.
It didn’t take long for them to get through their meal. Audrey found the food was delicious, and realized that she was quite a bit more hungry than she’d originally thought. They talked about the bakery a little more, and about Merlin’s job at Stark. Then the chocolate cake came out for dessert. It was a small portion, but rich and delicious, a perfect compliment to the ice cream.
“Should we go for a walk?” Audrey asked, after finishing her last bite. “Or do you think we should go relieve the babysitter?”
The food was definitely lovely, not that it was too surprising, and ordering between them worked very well as they managed to finish everything on their plates. Conversation was easy and they were both very relaxed by the end of the meal.
“Let’s have a walk, I’m sure the sitter is fine” Merlin said, trusting Audrey’s choices when it came to the kids.
“Sounds perfect.” Audrey pulled out a credit card to pay their tab. The waitress took the check and card off to run it, and Audrey took hold of both of Merlin’s hands. “Where should we walk? Nearby? Isn’t there a park near here? You used to take Ben when he was little, right?”
Merlin nodded, “Yeah, it’s nice they plant different things for different times of year. The lights might still be on too” They tended not to turn them off until the nights got too light to fully appreciate them.
“That sounds lovely.” Audrey finished her last sip of wine, and then the waitress was back with her card and their receipt. She tucked them both into her purse and stood. Merlin’s arm was warm as she slipped hers through it, then took his hand and laced their fingers together.
They headed out into the dusk air. It was darkening rapidly, and pretty chilly. She cuddled close up against him as they headed along the sidewalk toward the park.
Merlin liked walking like this with Audrey, he cast a little warming spell over them as he did so Audrey wouldn’t get too cold. “Oh look, you can already see the lights from the park” he said as they approached, there was a yellowish glow coming from the hanging decorations, “It gives it a magical look” he grinned at her.
“It does.” Audrey grinned back. They had a secret between them. It wasn’t a huge secret, as a lot of other people knew about it, but it was nice to get to share a grin and a few candid words about magic with her husband. She leaned in close, resting her temple against his shoulder for a moment. “I love you.”
“I love you too” Merlin said pressing a kiss to her head, “Very much and I love our life even when we get a little busy” He’d never imagined marriage and kids in his future but he knew without a doubt that Audrey was the one for him and now he couldn’t imagine life without her.
“Me, too. Though, I really do think we should try to make this a monthly thing. Just you and me out for a romantic evening. Away from kids and life and everything.” She tightened her arm around his, cuddling in closer. It wasn’t cold, but she relished the closeness. “What do you think?”
“Mmm definitely, we were so good at it when Ben was a baby. I’m sure we can soon get in the swing of it again and Nina and Gabe would be willing to help out I think, when Nina is on the right shift”
“We just fell out of the habit, I think. And with Bea being a bit more needy than Ben ever was… it makes it hard.” Audrey knew they could do it, though. They could get into the habit of being more regular with their dates, especially if Nina and Gabe wouldn’t mind helping out. “I’ll check in with her. I’ve let work get in the way of everything.”
Merlin nodded in agreement, “It is and we don’t need to beat ourselves up if we miss a week but more regularly is definitely a good idea” he said, “I’m sure she’s been busy too. They’ve been waiting to hear about the results of the baby test too” Merlin knew both Nina and Gabe had been worried about the results of that and he hoped it was good news. He thought they’d make good parents.
“I can’t wait to hear, too!” Audrey beamed, giving Merlin a bright smile. “I can’t wait for Nina to be a mother.” Nina was so good with Bea and Ben, she knew that her friend’s caring and supportive nature (and the touch of no-nonsense that Nina brought to the table, too) would definitely make for good parenting material. And Gabe was fantastic, too. Audrey loved them both so much.
“Let’s go home.” She said, once they’d walked around for a while. “It’s Valentine’s Day. I wanna get laid.” She grinned, mischievously, and squeezed her husband’s hand.
