Part of Mary Margaret still couldn’t quite believe that for the last couple of weeks she had only had half a heart beating in her chest and that David had the other half. When she had originally dreamt about her heart being split in half so that David could survive the spell to bring them back to Storybrooke, she had worried that somehow she had only had half a heart after that, but at the time it hadn’t made sense for it to happen, even if the dreams did do strange things to them on occasion. However, when David dreamt the same thing, his heart had begun to dissolve, in his chest. Now it made complete sense why it hadn’t affected her originally; the dreams had been waiting.
Now all she wondered was what would happen if she ever needed an x-ray. How would she explain that one?
Today she was trying not to dwell on the whole heart issue because she was meeting Emma for lunch and was excited to do so. She hadn’t see her quasi-daughter since Christmas and was looking forward to catching up and talking wedding stuff.
Emma felt a little like she was all systems go, all the time, constantly. And it wasn’t like it was a bad thing, not really, it just meant that when it came time, she was rather glad she was getting an afternoon to meet with Mary Margaret and enjoy a nice lunch.
She actually had a little reminder on her phone about asking Mary Margaret about the wedding too, because without phone reminders she was getting a little bit scatter brained in what she was meant to be doing lately. Not terribly uncommon she’d heard.
“Hey,” arriving for lunch, Emma knew she was a little bit late, but she figured that with Mary Margaret having just as busy a time of it, it wouldn’t be held against her. “Sorry, Niko wouldn’t settle before I left.” And normally she’d have just bundled him up and taken him with her, but she sort of wanted an afternoon with her pseudo-mom to herself.
Mary Margaret smiled upon seeing Emma and reached out to give her a hug once she was close enough, “That’s alright. Having a baby, in the dreams, I’m fully aware of how difficult they can be,” Mary Margaret still missed Neal, but having both Niko and Meara around was helping with that, “So, how’s everything else going?” She asked as they approached the hostess stand to be seated.
“Really well, almost too well,” and was that not the worry? When everything was running smoothly it was something to worry about. “But I’m enjoying it for what it is.” She was getting back into work, her schedule slightly different but no less fulfilling, least of all with Niko over six months old. “What about you? Are you still overworking yourself, or has David convinced you to take a little more time off for fun things?” And Emma couldn’t avoid the smirk and little eyebrow wiggle at the implication.
“I’m glad things are going so well,” Mary Margaret said as they were led to a table and she took a seat, smiling, “No, I’ve actually not been overworking myself. I’ve been working on spending an equal amount of time at the shelter as well as with David and leaving time for myself; like archer practice and just time alone every now and then,” Mary Margaret had to admit, not spending so much time at the shelter and allowing other people to take some of the workload off her was more relaxing than it had been in the past when she would constantly worry about what was going on when she wasn’t there.
At Emma’s implication, Mary Margaret smirked, her cheeks flushing slightly, “Maybe.”
It was good to hear that Mary Margaret was taking a little time away from the shelter, as good as her work was, as important as it was, she couldn’t possibly do it all herself and constantly be there. Emma was glad that she was letting other people help her, taking time for herself among all the work she did.
“Well, I’m glad you’re trying to get some time to yourself.” Taking her seat across from Mary Margaret, Emma offered a small smile, “You deserve some time to just unwind.” And if part of that was spent reconnecting with David, then Emma was more than just happy for Mary Margaret.
“How is the budding relationship with Prince Charming going?”
“With my assistant, it has been a lot easier and I’ve been able to let up and not worry so much,” Mary Margaret said as a waitress approached to introduce herself and give them menus before taking their drink orders. “I’m probably going to look into hiring an actual assistant manager soon too.” She had had one way back when she’d first opened the shelter, but that hadn’t lasted long and over the last few years it had simply all fallen on her and she’d become used to it.
She opened her menu once the waitress left and started looking over it, “It’s good. It’s funny, we should still be in the getting to know each other phase, but it feels like we’ve known each other forever. Like it’s been years and not months that we’ve been together. We’re just so comfortable with each other. Does that make sense?” She wondered if it had been that way for Emma and Neal. “And now that we share a heart….I just feel even closer to him.”
Flipping through the menu, with the drinks ordered, Emma nodded a little in understanding with Mary Margaret, “I think that’s wise, you should see about getting some help there, so that you don’t let yourself get overworked.” And Emma knew a fair amount about that. It was good that Mary Margaret had an assistant just now, but someone else to help manage the place would be good for her too.
The way things worked here for them, considering how they dreamed and had entire lives with people, it was complex, she knew that. Her feelings for Neal sometimes had gotten muddled with the betrayal of the dreams, and while she wasn’t in love with Killian, she did love him. And that carried mostly from the dreams. “It does. We dream these whole lives with each other, where we’re in so many situations that… It really requires us to just love so completely.” Charming and Snow were true love after all, it made sense to Emma that Mary Margaret and David would already feel that connection. “Sharing a heart now, that’ll just amplify everything.”
Mary Margaret nodded, “That’s exactly how it is.” And it worked the other way around too, considering how she’d felt towards Regina the first time they had met, which was irrational since in the waking world there had been no reason for her to be afraid of the other woman, but the fear had simply bled over, “Oh, believe me, it has.”
“It’s complex sometimes, isn’t it. Picking through our feelings.” Like her irrational feelings of betrayal when she’d dreamt of Neal leaving her, of her believing he’d sent her to prison for his theft, she hadn’t even been dating Neal when she’d dreamt that. “I can attest that it is very much worth it, just to go with it, with what feels right.” The ring on her finger was enough for her to support just doing what felt right.
“So he’s going to be your date to my wedding?”
Mary Margaret smiled and nodded, “Well, I think he’d be a little offended if I took someone else.” They needed to do a little planning for travel very soon, but she didn’t think it would be too difficult. It was a little weird, her being the unmarried one while Emma and Regina were engaged with children. It was almost like the complete opposite of the dreams, but in a weird way it made sense, because who wanted everything to be exactly the same? Besides, considering how natural their relationship felt, who was to say that they wouldn't end up engaged soon also?
“Maybe a little,” deciding on what she was going to order, Emma closed the menu over and laid it out, leaving it under her folded hands where it was. She was figuring out how to ask what she wanted to ask. It had been a little easier with Regina last week, because it was just a matter of ‘please don’t let me make this look awkward’, and while Emma and Regina had just gotten to the friendly stage of things in the dreams, where they worked well together, but Emma and Regina were friends here.
“I actually wanted to talk to you a little about the wedding,” she’d assumed, years ago, when she’d lost her parents here, she hadn’t been sure she’d have that feeling at her wedding, her mom and dad there. And while nothing would bring them back, there was something to be said for the family you made and the bond that the dreams built between them all. “I mean, we are having it in Tallahassee, but I think we can deal with the travel thing there, but I wanted to talk to you about… maybe being my bridesmaid? One of my two bridesmaids.”
Mary Margaret couldn’t help the smile that spread across her lips at the question and she nodded emphatically, “Yes. Yes, of course.” She assumed that Regina was likely Emma’s other bridesmaid. It only made sense considering that they were close, “I’d love to be one of your bridesmaids, Emma.”
While Emma had sort of known that neither Regina nor Mary Margaret were likely to flat out turn her down, she still felt a little weight lifting of relief when they’d both firmly said yes and that was that over with. “Oh great, I sort of hoped you’d say yes, I asked Regina and she said yes, and Regina’s planning the bachelorette party, I don’t know if you wanna get in on that.” Or if it was safer to let Regina run wild with it and just brace for the long night of blushing.
“So the three of us will need to go dress shopping.” Emma wasn’t going to try and make that choice herself, and she wanted to make sure the Regina and Mary Margaret liked their dresses too. “I’m a little shocked that it’s only a month or so away now.” About six weeks away now.
“Why would I say no? I’m honored to be part of your wedding,” Mary Margaret wasn’t the least bit surprised to hear that Regina was planning the bachelorette party, “I’ll have to get in touch with her to see what she’s planning. Might be better to leave most of the planning up to her though.” With Regina planning it, she was sure that it would be a night to remember.
Dress shopping with Regina and Emma was also likely to be an event to remember, “Now that’s going to be an interesting shopping trip.” She knew that she could likely expect a few comments from Regina on her wardrobe during the trip. “What made you guys decide to get married to soon?”
Regina was one of the most organised people that Emma knew, and she was good at events, and honestly, her efficency sort of scared Emma sometimes, but it was helpful too. “I never just want to assume, you know, because things can get complex.” And stuff happened and she was constantly second guessing, but the fact that her family were going to be involved helped greatly.
“So interesting.” Because all of their styles were just so different, but at the very least it could probably work for them. “Does it feel like so soon? I mean, I mean I know we got engaged a while ago, but… It still feels longer, like… Like we’ve been waiting for this for years.” In some ways they had. Dream Emma and Neal never got that, she wasn’t sure dream Emma ever would. But she was getting to marry her partner, the father of her children, and that was enough for Emma.
Mary Margaret smiled and took both of Emma’s hands in her own, squeezing a little, “I can understand that. I think if David and I got engaged, we probably wouldn’t wait too long to actually get married either,” Not that the marriage conversation had come up yet, considering they had only just had to deal with the heart splitting, but considering how their relationship has been going so far, Mary Margaret didn’t think it would be a long engagement if and when they did get engaged. “I’m so happy for you, Emma. You and Neal. And I can’t wait for the wedding.”
Honestly, Emma didn’t see Mary Margaret and David having a long, drawn out relationships pre-marriage proposal. Everyone knew they were made for each other, and Emma had seen that twice over, maybe three times depending on which curse was considered. “I can’t wait for it either,” Emma just squeezed the hands holding hers, knowing that not too long ago, in Storybrooke, this had been what Snow White wanted for her daughter; happily ever after. “I know Neal only proposed a couple of months ago, and I know that we’ve only been together a year or so, but it feels like more. It feels like I’ve been wanting this for years.”
