Since returning to school, Jem had found that his new abilities were much easier to handle than he had expected. It he were honest, he’d known that it was unlikely that he would have a problem, but there was still that irrational part of him that even as a Silent Brother, he still listened to on occasion. Realistically, he’d had more than enough time to gain control over his mind reading abilities in large crowds since he’d originally become a Silent Brother, but he couldn’t shake the feeling that one of these days he might accidently answer a professor or another student telepathically and then he’d have to try and explain that one away. With Will and Tessa or anyone else he was close to, he didn’t have to worry about speaking to them telepathically, because they were more than familiar with the things the dreams could do to someone.
About a week after classes had started, Jem had become familiar with his new schedule and where his classes were and how much time he had between them based on where they were so he had figured out that Tuesdays were the best day to have lunch with Tessa at the bookstore. He had a large enough gap between his afternoon classes that he had more than enough time to make it to and from the shop before his later afternoon class.
After making sure Tessa would be at the shop and would be free at this time, Jem had stopped at a deli near campus and picked up sandwiches for them both and made his way over to the shop.
Tessa always looked forward to spending time with Jem, so having lunch at the shop made her very happy. She’d made sure that she had some time carved out to spend with him even though it would only be in her office. Greeting him at the front of the shop with a bright smile, she kissed him quickly, then took his hand and led him into the office. “So, how has your day been? Good lessons?” she asked as she sat behind the desk and patted the seat she had placed next to her.
Jem smiled as he kissed her back and allowed her to lead him into her office where he set the sandwiches down on her desk. As a Silent Brother, Jem didn’t have to eat as a result of the Runes that were used to transform a Shadowhunter into a Silent Brother, but every now and then he still liked to eat a little to give the impression that he wasn’t that different from Will and Tessa or anyone else. “It’s been good. I had history this morning. My various music classes are this afternoon. How has your day been?”
“Thank you very much,” Tessa smiled and kissed him on the cheek as he set the food down. She looked in the bag, pulled out the sandwiches and looked towards him. “Which is which? I am so hungry I could eat through the wrapper!” she smiled, waiting for him to point out the right sandwich.
“How are things going then? You’re doing ok with the being in larger crowds?” she asked, unwrapping her sandwich and taking a bite.
Jem pointed out which sandwich was Tessa’s then took the seat she had offered him, “Things are going well. It would seem that I worried for nothing,” Had Simon gone back to classes right after becoming a Silent Brother, he likely would have had more of a problem keeping control of his new found telepathy, but now it was almost like second nature despite being worried about it. “How has business been today?”
“That's great! I'm so happy for you,” Tessa smiled, leaned over and rested her head on his shoulder. “This place has been really busy today, I'm thinking of advertising for another full time assistant,” she told him happily, sitting upright and taking a bite of her sandwich.
Jem smiled and nodded, his sandwich still unwrapped, “That wouldn’t be a bad idea.” Jem knew how hard Tessa worked at the shop and he didn’t want her to overwork herself. “Then maybe you wouldn’t have to be here so often.” He knew that Tessa was very particular about the shop, but he was sure that things would still be done right even without her there.
Tessa looked at him a little sadly. “I’m sorry I’ve not been around as much,” she apologised to him. “I know this place take sup a lot of my time, but hopefully now we’re in a better position where I can afford another person and free up some more time for myself,” she explained. “I need to run it by my business manager of course, but my own calculations appear to say that it’s feasible,” she shrugged but smiled at him optimistically.
“It’s quite alright, Tessa.” Jem said, reaching over to take one of her hands, “It’s understandable. This is your business and it has to take come first.” He didn’t blame Tessa for being so busy with the shop and he knew that Will didn’t either. “Now that you mention it, I should probably begin looking for a new job myself.” Once he’d gotten sick Jem had needed to stop working at the antique store and hadn’t been working since.
“I know, but it’s a shame I’ve had to spend so much time focussing on the business, I feel like I am doing you and Will a disservice,” Tessa shrugged, linking her fingers with his as she did. “If you need any hours here you’re more than welcome. It’ll get you some experience while you’re looking for something else,” she suggested.
“I can assure you that you’re not doing anyone a disservice,” He smiled at her and squeezed her hand, “That would be lovely actually.” Since Jem had been out of work he’d felt back that Will and Tessa had been more or less supporting him and wanted to be able to pull his own weight.
“That would be great, I’d love to have you around here!” Tessa grinned at him, pressing a kiss to his cheek again. “I was thinking of doing an event for the UK’s World Book Day on the 2nd of March to promote literature from the UK. Would you like to be involved in organising that?” she offered.
“I’d love to help organise that.” A love of literature was one of the things that all three of them had in common, so even if he didn’t pick up a few hours at the shop, he would be there anyway, but this way he would be able to make a little money at the same time, “You can tell me what you have in mind at home later.” He knew that he was going to have to leave soon to get back to campus, but he still had a few more minutes that he could spend with her.
“Oh this is so exciting!” Tessa grinned at him, bouncing a little in her seat and pressing a kiss to his lips. “I can’t wait to have you around more! I’ll have to do some brainstorming with Capable about what we can do!” she beamed at him and kissed him again, capturing his face between both hands as she did.
Jem smiled as he kissed her back. He was looking forward to spending more time with Tessa at the shop and was looking forward to helping her set up for this event. “I look forward to hearing about all of your ideas.”
“I look forward to telling you and hearing yours too,” Tessa smiled up at him. “I love you.”
