The minute that Stefan had told her about the puppy, Bubbles had rushed around her house in a flurry, trying to get ready and get together any sort of things that she thought she might need to help the little puppy feel better. If there was any injuries that she couldn’t deal with, she knew the perfect place to take it. She’d probably have to take the little darling to see someone anyway, but for now, she’d handle what she could.
When she got to Stefan’s place, she rushed out of her car, nearly dropping her keys and locking them inside. She quickly made her way to the door, knocking before pushing the door open. She was past the point of waiting patiently outside, but with their having been together for almost a year, it didn’t really seem like something that she needed to worry about anymore. “Stefan? Where’s the puppy? Where are you?”
Stefan had been out hunting when he’d come across a fairly unfamiliar scene; a stray mother dog along with a handful of puppies who were being attacked by a fairly nasty coyote. The mother dog was already dead, and the coyote was making quick work of the litter. Stefan couldn’t tell how old the little ones were, but he knew that it just wasn’t right to kill infants. So he killed the coyote and saved the final pup. It was tiny, and white, and covered in matted fur, blood, and mud. Stefan brought the thing home, thinking of Bubbles. She’d know what to do.
They texted quickly, and Stefan put the tiny pup in the kitchen sink to wash it off. That’s where he was when Bubbles came into the house. “In here,” he called to her. The pup was soaked, still muddy, and some of that matted fur would probably need to be cut off.
Bubbles made a small noise when she saw the puppy and Stefan. Poor little thing. She moved closer, keeping her pace slow so as not to startle the poor baby. When she made it to the sink, she let it sniff at her hands before asking it a few questions about what hurt and didn’t as she felt around. She was careful to avoid the cuts when she saw them, but she didn’t want to go around poking things too much. Just enough to determine if anything was broken or not. She also introduced herself and explained that they were just trying to help.
Looking at Stefan, she said, “She says thank you.” Because she had checked and been told at the same time. Bubbles gave him a small smile before putting her bag down and pulling out a small pair of scissors. She’s brought them in case she needed to apply any bandages, but it would be important, as Stefan had noticed, to cut some of the matted fur off. “Just keep her from moving too much. I don’t want to hurt her.”
Stefan was in awe of how Bubbles was able to talk with the little puppy. He stepped aside and let her do her work. At least the water was warm, but the pup still seemed to be freezing. At least, it was shivering.
“She?” He asked, breaking into a little smirk. Very little. But that was proof that Bubbles could do anything, couldn’t it? She was making friends with the pup already. “Well, tell her that she’s welcome. I wish I could have done more for her.” Then he moved back in to hold her as still as he could while Bubbles worked with the scissors.
It almost seemed like a normal thing for her now. She didn’t have to think about talking to them anymore, she just did it. It was second nature. Of all the powers she had in the dreams, this was the easiest to manage. “Yes. She.” She knew that without having to ask because really...there were just some things you were aware of when doing an assessment.
Bubbles relayed his message as she carefully cut some of the matted fur away. “We’ll probably have to take her to get seen by a vet soon. I can stay here and watch her tonight, but tomorrow, I might take her with me to work to see if one of our vets can look her over and see if there’s anything we need to do for her in particular.”
“That sounds good. I want to make sure she gets the best help.” Stefan didn’t like the way he’d come across the poor pup and her family. He didn’t like having to kill the creature that slaughtered the her mother and siblings. It reminded him too much of his own life--his Dream Life--and he hated it. Hated that part of his mock past. He was thankful to have Bubbles in his life. She was a bright light to squash out the darkness.
“We’ll make her a little bed in my room. We’ve got some nice, fluffy towels I think she’d like.”
Bubbles smiled brightly at Stefan’s suggestion about the fluffy towels. Taking her out of the sink, she carefully walked back to Stefan’s room, not all that concerned about getting her clothes wet. She was sure that if she had to, she could just clean her clothes and borrow a shirt from Stefan. “I think she could probably use some sleep,” she called back as she walked. Stefan could move faster than she could in general. “If you wanted to get the towels for it. Also a bowl with some water. Do you have any food? I can try to give her something if I have to.”
With the clean pup in hand, Bubbles headed back toward Stefan’s bedroom. The vampire drained the sink and tidied the kitchen in a flash, then collected up things and followed after her. “I’m sure she could,” he added, pulling a towel from the linen close along the way. “I don’t have any dog food. I’ve got… well, I think Anna has some canned tuna. Do you think she’d like that? Or… should I find some milk?”
He brought the towel into the bedroom with her, unfolding and refolding it into a soft cushion, then laid it on the bed.
Bubbles studied Stefan for a long moment before shaking her head. “She’s not a cat, Stefan.” But she could stop and get puppy food. Until then, she was going to have to find something to feed her so she didn’t get too hungry. Putting her on top of the towels, she lifted up on her tiptoes to press a kiss on Stefan’s lips. “Be right back. I’ll find something.”
So she went back into the kitchen before looking around in the fridge and everything. She’d buy more food if she had to. But with Anna being the only person in the house that was eating, there wasn’t really as much food to choose from. She let out a small sigh before admitting defeat and coming back with a bowl of tuna. She’d eat it anyway.
“I… I know that.” Stefan gave a little laugh, reaching over to rub the dog behind her ears. “But they eat the same things that cats do, right?” They were carnivores. Kinda like Stefan was. He didn’t like thinking about that while Bubbles was around, though.
When she came back to the room, Stefan was sitting on the bed, and the pup had taken up residence in his lap. She was still slightly damp from her bath, and leaving a wet splotch on Stefan’s jeans. He looked up and smiled at Bubbles, smelling the tuna. One eyebrow raised.
“I couldn’t find anything else,” she said with a hint of a pout. “I guess that’s what happens when no one really eats food besides one person.” She didn’t mind, though. She’d just...have to make sure there was food for her new puppy later. Tomorrow. She could get some food tomorrow. “I guess it’ll have to do for right now.”
She set the bowl down on the bed, carefully sitting down and keeping her hands on the bed, putting her hands around it so that the puppy wouldn’t knock it over while eating her food.
“I’ll tell Anna that she needs to keep better dog food items stocked.” Stefan teased. He let the pup crawl off his lap to sniff at the tuna. “Or you can tell me what kind she likes, and I’ll make sure to get some for her.” He added, breaking into a toothy grin as the pup started to chow down on the tuna.
“See? She seems to like it.” Stefan reached over and petted the dog while she ate. “We’ll have to get her a doggy bed so she has somewhere a little more permanent to sleep. That is… if she’s going to stay here with me. Or is she going home with you?”
Bubbles scrunched up her nose, momentarily considering swatting Stefan. She didn’t however. She couldn’t hurt Stefan. Even if it wouldn’t really hurt him. “We can figure it out. There’s lots of food that’s good for dogs and puppies alike.” She’d just go ahead and buy some food and see what stuck. She could get small bags of a couple of things and figure it out. It couldn’t be that difficult.
“Oh no. The Professor wouldn’t let me keep her at the house.” It was true, too. She’d been asking for a pet most of her life and it still hadn’t happened. “So if you don’t mind her staying here, I’ll definitely come and visit all the time.”
Stefan chuckled softly. The vampire who so rarely smiled only a year ago was now smiling, laughing, chuckling. Bubbles brought it out in him, and he couldn’t thank her enough for it. He sighed. “Well, I suppose. If I have to have you around…” He teased. Then he leaned forward to steal a kiss from her lips.
Bubbles was always happy to see Stefan smile. She remembered him from before and he’d always been so serious, but then he wasn’t exactly not serious anymore. He just smiled more, which Bubbles was pleased about. “I know. It’s so terrible. You have to be around me.” She smiled into the kiss, hands moving away from the bowl to rest on his shoulders. “I love you,” she whispered when the kiss broke. “So much.”
Stefan grinned softly against her lips when she whispered against them. He lifted a hand to tuck some of her hair over her shoulder. “I love you,” was his gentle reply. He nuzzled his nose against hers. “So much.” Then the dog was squirming her way between them on the bed again, trying to get close enough to either of them to lick their skin.
Bubbles laughed a little at the puppy, moving to pet her carefully. “I guess this makes us puppy parents.” She was happy for it. This was what she’d wanted to do for a very long time. “Want to lie down and cuddle with our new puppy?”
“It’s a pretty big step,” Stefan said, nodding, and then slid across the bed. He laid out, giving her room to cuddle up beside him with the dog. “You sure you’re ready for this?” He asked, teasing.
Bubbles rolled her eyes, lying down with him and the dog. “I’m absolutely sure that I’m ready for this.”
