Who: Wash and Anna
What: Valentine’s Getaway
When: Weekend before Valentine’s Day
Where: Ski Lodge in the mountains
Rating/Warnings Low/None
Status: Complete!
Wash had opted to make a reservation at a lodge rather than a hunting cabin for his and Anna’s trip into the mountains. His last stay at a hunting cabin hadn’t exactly been fun, plus there were more things for them to do at a lodge. They could go skiing, even though neither he nor Anna had ever been skiing before, the option was there. Or they could go snowboarding, although Wash hadn’t been snowboarding since he’d been fifteen, and it was nothing like skateboarding. The lodge also had a huge hill for sledding, complete with a lift that took you to the top. Wash thought Anna would really enjoy a day of that.
Inside the lodge boasted a cozy lobby area with a fireplace that was always crackling with warmth and had comfortable looking couches and oversized chairs good for couples to cuddle up in, something Wash knew Anna loved. A man even went around handing out mugs of hot coco and coffee. Wash was rubbish when it came to romantic getaways, but this place seemed pretty perfect as far as the marine was concerned. He just hoped Anna had a good time.
Life was ridiculously good. Anna couldn’t remember a time she was happier than she was now. Things with Elsa were wonderful--their relationship was mended, they were closer than ever--and she had the best housemates in the world! And there was Wash. Anna couldn’t remember a time when she’d felt more in love with someone, more connected to another human being. This Valentine’s celebration was going to be the best ever. Anna couldn’t help her excitement. She’d gone out and purchased all new underwear for the weekend getaway, and was excited to spend time with Wash sledding, building snowmen, and cuddled up in their room.
It was a beautiful lodge. Anna was grinning nonstop as they made their way in and looked around. Their bags were safe in the room, and snow was piled up outside. Anna was warm and happy, and slipped her fingers into Wash’s hand. “This is perfect.”
The best present Wash could have ever asked for was seeing Anna happy. He gave her hand a squeeze. “I’m glad you like it,” he said. He couldn’t take all the credit. York had been the one to give him the idea of a weekend getaway. Wash and Anna had already gone away once as a couple, but Wash wasn’t really sure a trip to the Chicago Pop Culture Con really counted. He’d asked her before they had become “official” and the trip was more for Wash than it was for Anna, though Anna’d had a pretty good time showing off her perfect cosplay. The weekend at the lodge was their first real trip together and Wash was actually pretty excited for it. A chance to do normal couple things for a while. No Dreams. No Drama. Just them.
He leaned down to give her a quick kiss. “What do you want to do first?” He asked. He couldn’t help but smirk just a little bit, “do you want to build a snowman?”
Quick kisses may have been Anna’s favorite. She always lingered a little, eyes half-lidded, chin tipped up as if lingering in it. The anticipation was half the fun. Maybe not quite half, but it was a considerable portion. Anyway, her eyes sparkled as they looked up into his. Then she laughed. “As long as he’s not a giant monster. Or Olaf. I couldn’t bear it if he melted!”
“No giant monsters,” Wash promised with a smile. “Not on purpose anyway. It’s been a long time since I’ve built any snowmen, so I can’t promise how well the dude will turn out.” He squeezed her hand again before the two of them headed outside to find a good spot to make their snowman.
Wash found a spot a few yards away from the lodge where it was probably safe from being harassed by little kids here on vacation with their families or destroyed by any drunk jackasses. It was a nice little area by a small grove of trees with a nice view of the lodge itself. “This is a good spot, yeah?”
Since being ambushed by York and a onslaught of snowballs, Wash had gotten himself a pair of gloves that he could actually manipulate snow with. Wash took advantage and started rolling up a ball of snow.
The snow was pretty cold outside, but Anna was used to the cold. She’d been through a lot of it in her Dreams, and again when snow fell in Orange County. Having a Frozen Heart meant that every other time she felt cold paled in comparison. Anna was prepared this time, wearing thick gloves and a super warm jacket. She moved with him to pretty much the best spot ever to build the snowman, and nodded.
“This is perfect! Look at all this snow!” You’d think that after living with Elsa for so long both in the Dreams and in this reality, that the excitement over snow might have worn off by now. But Anna was still enthusiastic about it. Still giddy. She moved to help him roll and collect the snow, trying to remember what it was like to build without having the help of Elsa’s magic.
After a while they had quite a ball gathered, and Anna was actually a little sweaty from the work. “Man! I forgot how much harder this is without Elsa.”
Anna was enthusiastic about everything. It was one of many things Wash loved about her. She had a way of making him enthusiastic about anything. Snow hadn’t been a big deal since he’d been a little kid. Snow days hadn’t been the windfall day off for Wash as it had been to his classmates. Usually snow meant he was outside shoveling in clothes barely enough to keep him warm. But, with Anna, Wash could see the snow through her eyes. How beautiful and fun it was.
“I think the last time I built a snowman it was with my grandmother,” Wash said. He took a step back to look at the nice round ball they’d made for the base. “I think I was...maybe nine? I also think she did most of the work.” He laughed a little bit, even if he couldn’t remember it very well. “Can Elsa make snowmen whenever she wants?”
Anna laughed a little, stepping over to him as he laughed. She leaned in and kissed Wash’s cheek. His cheek was freezing, but her lips were warm. “Yeah. She can.” Anna wrapped both arms around his for a moment, hugging in close, then released him so she could start on the second ball. “I think she can even make them alive.”
While she was rolling the snow, Anna picked out the leaves and twigs, trying to make the snow as clean as she could. It was going to be a nice, big snowball.
“She can make living snowmen?” Elsa had been at Gale’s wedding, but with everything going on and Wash’s duties as Best Man, he hadn’t really had the chance to sit down and talk with Anna’s older sister. He’d like to fix that at some point. Elsa was an important part of Anna’s life and Anna had gone out of her way to get to know Carolina. Wash should do the same. “You know, Anna, I’ve been thinking. Maybe I should meet Elsa. Like, officially.”
Anna nodded, still focused on making the middle of the snowman’s body. She glanced up and over at Wash, smiling warmly. Her nose was going very pink from the cold. “You… want to meet Elsa? I mean, I think that’s a great idea.” She stood up and dusted snow off her gloves. Thankfully, they were waterproof, so she wasn’t feeling the chill just yet. They could probably easily finish making the snowman before freezing and really wanting to head inside.
“Are you… nervous?” She asked, the smile spreading. “About meeting Elsa?”
“Of course I want to meet Elsa.” he nodded. Wash had started rolling a smaller snowball to make the head. He paused for a moment and glanced at Anna. “I mean, I did kind of already meet her at Gale’s wedding, but we never really got the chance to talk.” He smirked. “Someone had me on the dance floor all night.”
He’d be lying if he said he wasn’t nervous. “Yeah. A little.” His expression turned sheepish. “Well, actually a lot.” Well, if he was being totally truthful, he was terrified. What if Elsa didn’t like him? What if she thought her little sister could do better? Wash loved Anna and he hoped Elsa would see that, but sometimes love wasn’t enough. Especially when dealing with a family member who only wanted the best for their loved one. If Carolina had brought home a recovering addict ten years her senior with a series of mental issues and proclaimed she was in love with him, Wash would probably have a few words to say about that.
Still, terrified or not, it was important that he meet Elsa, especially considering how close Anna was with her sister.
“She’s gonna love you just as much as I do.” Anna assured him. Then frowned just slightly. “Well, maybe not just as much. That would be weird.” Besides, Elsa was into girls. “The most important thing is how much I love you,” Anna insisted. She bent back down to finish the middle of the snowman, then lifted it to put it on the lower part.
A little shriek escaped Anna as she fell off balance and landed on her backside in the snow. “It’s wet! It’s cold and wet!” She cried out and climbed back up to her feet. She wasn’t wearing snow pants or anything, just jeans, and now her little tush was totally soaked.
Wash relaxed a little with Anna’s reassurance, and even chuckled a little bit. He really hoped Anna was right and that Elsa liked him. “I love you, too.” He said, going back to shaping the snowball into the head.
He nearly dropped it when he heard Anna’s cry. He looked up just in time to see her take a tumble in the snow. He winced a little bit, but chuckled. Of course it was cold and wet. It was snow! He hurried over to her. “You alright?” He asked her as he helped dust the snow off of her, even though a lot of it was already melting on her warm body. He smiled a little. “Maybe we should have put on snow pants before coming out here.”
“Yes,” Anna said, dusting the snow off. But she was already cold and wet. She laughed again, then shook her head. “Uh… yeah. If we come back out again we should definitely wear something waterproof.” She gave him a sheepish smile, then wrapped an arm around him to hug in close once more. “Let’s make this quick, then head inside?”
“Absolutely,” Wash nodded. He placed the head on top of the body. They hadn’t brought out a carrot for a nose, or coal for eyes, so Wash had to make due by carving a couple of holes for eyes and dragging his finger across the bottom to make a grinning mouth. Not perfect, but still kind of cute. Maybe?
That done, Wash took a couple of steps back and pulled his gloves back on. He put an arm around Anna and pulled her close. “Not bad,” he said rather proudly. He smiled down at her. “You want to head in? I’ll get you warmed up.”
Anna dug around in the snow until she found some sticks and leaves to try and make … arms? Clothes? Something. She decorated the snowman, having tugged her gloves off for better finger dexterity. By the time they were finished, Anna’s fingers were wet and frozen, and her nose was pink and a little runny. But she was grinning. This was the best ever. She pulled out her phone, cuddling up against him, and took a picture of the cute, little snowman. (Actually, he was a good size. Elsa would be proud.)
“Yes, please. Hot chocolate? And cuddles?” She asked, looking up at him.
Wash grinned. He squeezed her tightly for a moment. “Hot chocolate,” he said. “I saw someone handing mugs out in the lodge. Then we can cuddle up in front of the fire.”
Despite Anna’s tumble in the snow, this was a great way to start out their weekend. Wash was looking forward to all the things they would be doing. Or they could stay in their room, snuggled up together in bed. That’d be fine too.
Wash smiled and rubbed Anna’s arm as they headed back towards the lodge.
