Spencer was reeling from these weird Dreams she’d been having lately. She was back in high school, being terrorized by this strange, so-called A person, who seemed to know all her deepest, darkest secrets. It was something like blackmail, but she couldn’t figure out what the bitch wanted. It was driving her nuts. And she knew that Emily and Hanna were going through something similar, and Toby, too. They were all Dreaming similar things. It was the weirdest thing. She couldn’t figure it out and that bothered her.
She was distracted, staring out the window, as she waited in the cafe on campus for Will to show up.
Will liked Spencer’s company, she was a bright girl and wasn’t the sort to take crap from anybody. Just the kind of person Will should get along well with really.
Entering the campus cafe he spotted her and slipped into the seat opposite her without her really noticing, “You definitely have something on your mind not to realise the hottest guy on campus has arrived” he teased her pulling her from her thoughts.
Spencer jumped a little at the sound of his voice, startling and turning to face him suddenly. Her eyes were wide and her heart thundering, but she started to calm once she realised it was just Will across from her. “Jeez,” and she broke into a smile, cheeks going pink. “Well, it’s not my fault you snuck up on me.”
Will just gave her a grin, “So what’s on your mind? It must be something pretty big” Being distracted was one thing but she’d properly been lost in her thoughts.
Spencer gave a little sigh. “I guess it’s a bit obvious how distracted I was?” She toyed with the paper napkin on the table in front of her for a moment as her smile faded. “...well, I’ve had a couple of really weird Dreams. That’s all.” Her cell phone was sitting face up on the table, and as she talked about the Dreams, she stared at it. Then reached over, and flipped it upside down.
“Just a bit” Will said with a softer smile, he could tell it was obviously bothering her. “If you wanna talk about it then feel free” he offered, “I have weird dreams too so trust me I won’t think you’re crazy or anything” he added for reassurance.
“Yeah?” Spencer glanced up at him. Of course he had. It was Will who’d told her about the Network in the first place. And Spencer was convinced that was the root of all this trouble. She took a deep breath and let it out slowly before she went on. “I’m back in High School of all things. My friends and I have these deep, dark secrets, and someone’s sort of blackmailing and torturing us over them.”
“Oh yeah” Will nodded, he didn’t want her to think she was alone in the crazy world of dreaming. “That’s pretty intense for high school” he said, “Blackmail isn’t your usual occurrence. What kind of secrets do high school kids have though?” he asked honestly curious.
“Well, it’s hard to explain. My friends and I are keeping a lot of secrets. From each other, from our parents, from the police...“ Spencer didn’t like to think about it too much. To explain it would be feeding into the madness, wouldn’t it? But it felt nice to let some of these things go. Finally. To get it off her chest. “We blinded this girl, Jenna. And my friend… our friend, Alison… she went missing. She was murdered.”
“Damn. Apparently high school is a lot more interesting than I thought” Will said, “Now I see why the blackmail is such a big deal. So you think it’s someone close to Jenna who might be behind it?” That would be his immediate suspicion.
Spencer snorted. “No kidding. If only my real life was as interesting.” Then she realized what that really meant, and shook her head. “No, I take it back. I wouldn’t want my real life to be anything like my Dreams.” She considered his question for a moment. “I have no idea. I’m really dumbfounded over all this.”
Will had to laugh then, “Careful what you wish for, especially around here” he warned her, only half teasing. “I’d be way more suspicious than that, I’d be trying to play detective and work out who knows what. But then I’m a sucker for like crime dramas and all that”
“I feel like Dream!me would get along with your detective side,” Spencer said, grinning. “Who knows, maybe that’s why we make such good friends.” She lifted her coffee cup in a cheers.
Chuckling Will gave her a grin in return, “Everybody likes me, in and out of dreams” he told her before lifting his cup in response, “We’re obviously just awesome people”
