Valentine’s Day. Should be something that Peeta didn’t mind since he was engaged to the love of his life, but god it was just too much extra work in the bakery. So many orders came rolling in and they had to stock up as much as they possibly good for the influx of people that came in last minute to buy goodies for their significant others and children. He was never the type to be upset about making extra money, but he was left a little exhausted by the time he closed his shop up on Valentine’s Day.
Luckily he would never forget the day and he stopped by a store on the way home to pick up flowers for Caroline and they had a reservation for dinner out later this evening. He let himself into the apartment and called out for Caroline once he entered. They had been working diligently on planning the wedding and in a few short months Caroline would be finished with school and they could really get their game plan going since they didn’t want to stay in this apartment forever.
Classes had gone by extremely slow. Now just because it was Valentine’s Day and Caroline was beyond excited to finally spend a proper Valentine’s with her soon-to-be husband. But she was also feeling a little nauseous. Which never really happened given the whole vampire thing. She must have had a bad blood bag or something.
As soon as her last class got out Caroline headed home to get ready for dinner with Peeta. They had been spending a lot of their time planning for the wedding it was nice to have an evening out. Get dressed up. She was in the middle of applying her make up when the nausea became too much. By the time Peeta got home, Caroline had been getting sick to her stomach on and off for almost an hour. “In here,” she called out weakly.
The sound of her voice wasn’t normal and she sounded quite odd, which meant something strange was going on. He set the flowers down on the kitchen table as he made his way towards her voice. Once his feet lead him towards the bathroom there was a frown on his face before he turned the corner and saw her on the bathroom floor. “Are you okay?” he immediately rushed over to her side and crouched down to help her sit up properly, “do you need me to grab you anything?”
“I’m fine,” Caroline lied to both herself and Peeta. “I must have had a bad blood bag or something. Left it sitting out too long.” Because what else could make her sick really? Vervain, but that mostly made her weak, not sick to her stomach. “Let me just freshen up and we can go.” There was no way she was going to let their Valentine’s Day get ruined. Caroline attempted to stand up, only be greeted with another bout of nausea.
“No you’re not,” Peeta commented quickly. He knew she was trying to downplay things like this. It could have been the blood bag since she didn’t really eat anything else, but that was not good that she was this sick. The moment she stood up he could see the look of alarm on her face and rushed over to her. An arm went around her as he tried to keep her up, “are you okay? Do you need to go back down?”
Caroline nodded her head, feeling slightly ashamed as she dropped back down in front of the toilet. She really shouldn’t be embarrassed, it wasn’t like she had never seen Peeta sick before. Hell she’d seen him throw up blood. But this was all new for her, she hadn’t been sick in like three years. Thank you vampirism. “Do you think we could stay in tonight?” she frowned not wanting to ruin their Valentine’s Day plans.
There was no reason to be embarrassed because Peeta had seen her at her highs and lows. That was part of being a couple. Being sick was part of the territory even though it didn’t happen to her very often. “I think we’re going to have to. Do you want me to go grab you anything from the store?” he wasn’t quite sure if any of those medicines would work, but it was worth trying. Anything to help her feel better.
“No.” Since vampires weren’t supposed to get sick she doubted any medicine would work on her either. Of course this was frightening but Caroline was doing her best to remain optimistic. It was just a bad blood bag. She’d be fine in the morning. “Just stay with me, please?”
“Of course,” Peeta wouldn’t go anywhere else if Caroline wasn’t feeling bad. He moved to to sit down on the floor next to her and wrapped an arm around her. It was hard to just be there and not be able to really do anything for her. She really could do a lot of it her own, but at least she still needed him and he would be here for her - forever.
