Wanda was waiting in a quiet corner of the foyer of Jean’s facility away from others, wrapping thin tendrils of her power around her fingers. She hadn’t met up with Jean for a little while, but every day she’d been practicing the exercises they had spoken about last time and she felt a lot more confident with her new found powers.
However, with Pietro leaving to go back to England and take care of their sponsor, she was feeling uncertain about everything. That uncertainty made her worry that she would lose control of her powers so she’d asked to see Jean.
Jean rushed up, giving Wanda an apologetic smile. “Sorry I’m late, had a student teacher meeting. I brought you a peace offering. Lets sit?”
She held up a cup of coffee, then gestured for Wanda to sit with her on a nearby couch. This room had been set up to be a kind of quiet area, and it was good for talking as long as they weren’t too loud. Jean thought that quiet was probably better right now. “How are you doing?”
“Oh, thank you. That is alright, I know how dedicated you are to your work,” Wanda smiled at Jean as she took the coffee and followed her to sit down on the couch. “I am...not great? My brother left for the UK the other day,” she told the other woman sadly.
“I’m sorry.” Jean leaned over and squeezed her arm. “What happened? Some kind of emergency?” She could imagine the kind of connection two close twins might have. It must be strange and a little painful to be alone after being close to a person like that.
Wanda looked down at the cup in her hands as she spoke. “In a way. The lady who sponsored us in the UK has become quite sick. Pietro told me to stay and try to finish my studies but...it has been hard. The apartment is too quiet without him, I find it difficult to concentrate,” she told Jean.
“You might want to consider a room mate,” Jean suggested. “To ease the loneliness. But that’s a really good thing your brother is doing. It speaks well of him.” She wondered if Wanda would go back after she finished her studies. WIth the political climate, she worried about her.
“I suppose I could, it would be nice to have someone else around again,” Wanda shrugged. “I have to be honest that the idea of following him is appealing for more than one reason. There are...changes happening here that make me...uncertain about how people could react to me not being from the United States,” she explained cautiously.
Jean nodded. “It’s something that worries me too. Immigrants aren’t exactly feeling welcome right now. And I don’t know your parentage here, but in my dreams, the version of you I know is both Jewish and Romani, which is not exactly a combination that plays well with the kind of people now in charge.”
Kitty had told her someone had defaced her car, and Jean had worried both for her and for Wanda and others ever since. “But if I have any say in the matter I won’t let anything happen to you.”
Wanda nodded as Jean spoke about her background. It wasn’t really something she carried with her and the her parents had died so long ago that she and Pietro had very much made their own way in the world without the weight of their heritage on their shoulders. “Thank you Jean, it means a lot to know that I have supportive people here,” she smiled up at the woman gratefully. “I am hoping that my feelings about staying or leaving will become clear in the next few days and weeks. But, I was hoping I could ask you about some more exercises for control? When I am feeling stressed or worried, I can feel my power...like it is trying to escape from the box I have it in,” she explained.
“That’s kind of how power like this works. We put it in a box but it wants to escape that box.” Jean took Wanda’s hands. She didn’t know what was worse, knowing what the Phoenix was, or being in Wanda’s shoes and not knowing exactly what she was capable of. She could show Wanda the things that had happened in her own dream universe. Not just the Phoenix, but also what Wanda was capable of, from her own memories and also from Logan’s or Kitty’s. But she didn’t want to burden her with that.
“The trick is to make the box strong, but also be willing to let it stretch it’s wings on occasion. That way it doesn’t burst out like a bomb.”
Wanda took a deep breath and nodded, it made sense and as she had found with previous teachings, a visualisation very much helped her to gain control over things. “Ok, so what else can I do to make the box strong?” she asked, looking up at Jean with a fierce sort of determination.
“Lets get started,” Jean said. “Close your eyes, and follow my lead.”
