Sarah had been rather surprised by the trip to Portland, it wasn’t what she had expected but she loved it. She’d never been of course but was so glad he’d chosen it. They’d had a wonderful day exploring the area and just enjoying being together. Most of the time Kira was always around and Sarah had to admit she’d found a good one in John since he never complained or seemed to mind, but even she had to admit it was nice to get away alone. She knew Kira was enjoying herself too since they’d spoken to her before going to bed.
Shifting in the bed Sarah was in the midst of a dream when she suddenly woke with a cry of pain, her body feeling tired and broken as she fought to become more aware of her surroundings.
John had been sleeping the sleep of the dead after a full on day out and about in the city and then canoodling in the evening. Hearing Sarah screaming in the middle of the night was not how he had imagined things going. From being sprawled on his front, John was jolted from his sleep. “Wha? What?” he murmured sleepily as he looked around the room. Turning to look over at Sarah, he squinted in the low light of the room to see what was going on.
He quickly sat up and turned the bedside light on, rubbing his face as he turned to look at Sarah. “What’s wrong Sara….oh my god! What the hell happened?!” he cried, leaning over her and trying to get at look at where all the blood on the covers was coming from.
Sarah was breathing hard as she struggled to focus on what was happening, “Dream” she said with a wince, “Stabbed in the leg, Rachel kicked the crap out of me and killed Susan. I don’t know where Cosima is” She was a little panicked by that, wondering if anything like this had happened to Cosima. Was her sister somewhere hurting too?
“Fuck this hurts like a bitch” she said breathing shallowly as she balled her hand over the wound and closed her eyes as she moaned in pain.
“So eloquent baby,” John muttered as he pulled the bedclothes back from her. “Crap, ok, ok, I’ve gotta call someone, call the paramedics,” he said to himself, looking to the side table for his phone and scrambling for it with shaking hands.
“Bugger that” Sarah said though she did manage to give him a weak smile, “Yeah painkillers would be great right now” she agreed, “Give me your shirt, tie it around my leg”
“Jesus, how can you be so practical while bleeding out?” John shook his head, momentarily distracted from calling for help on the phone as he found his shirt and started to tie it around her leg. “This is gonna hurt,” he warned her and without giving her time, tightened the knot over the wound.
“Not the first time” Sarah said before shouting loudly and words not for polite company, “Least the bitch didn’t shoot me”
“Seriously? This has happened before?!” John demanded, grabbing her face between his hands and making her look straight at him. “What else? Where else are you hurt?” he asked her forcefully.
“In the dreams, all kinds of things have happened. Not here” she told him, pulling her face from his grasp, “Bruised and beaten but that’s all. You getting pissed off is not helping call the bloody paramedic” she said, pain leading to her own anger.
“Shit, sorry,” John picked up the phone again and started dialing, pressing it between his shoulder and his ear as he spoke to the operator and pressed his hands to Sarah’s leg again. “Cosima, I should message Cosima,” he said, more to himself than Sarah.
“Not yet. I don’t want her to worry. Or Fe. Let’s get to the hospital first” Sarah said, her face paler than it had been before. The effort to remain conscious was straining her body but Sarah wasn’t going down without a fight.
“Ok,” John replied. “Right, pants and then I’ll get you down to the lobby,” he said to himself, leaping from the bed to put his pants and a shirt on and shoving his phone and the room card in his pocket before coming back to Sarah’s side of the bed. “Hey, come on babe, put your arm around my neck,” he leaned down and put his arms underneath her to pick her up.
Sarah had never been more thankful to have slept in her sleep shorts and top before, but it was probably something she’d do more often now. Sliding her arm around John’s neck she braced for the pain as he lifted her but still cried out. “Fuck, jesus christ this bastard hurts” she panted.
“I know, baby, I know, hang on,” John told her, pressing a kiss to her forehead as he headed for the door. Opening it carefully and heading out into the hallway, he eyed the lift before deciding the stairs would be quicker than waiting. Heading down the emergency stairs, he made his way to the lobby. John saw flashing lights some distance from the hotel and thanked god that he’d chosen a relatively central location. Although he hadn’t considered the need to call the emergency services as one of the top reasons for choosing this hotel. “Hey, stay with me, ok? They won’t be long now, just look at me, ok?” he encouraged.
“Trying” Sarah said fighting to stay awake so she didn’t worry John or you know potentially die. It was a bit of a worry if she was honest, “You can see blue light right? Not some call from heaven?” she asked him her voice sounding far away even to her own ears.
John couldn’t help but laugh and grin down at her. “Yeah sweetheart, there’s blue lights and it ain’t heaven calling. You’re just going to have to try harder to get away from me,” he told her, pressing a kiss to her forehead as the ambulance pulled up outside the lobby and started unloading the stretcher and heading towards them.
“Yeah? Think this is about my limit so you’re stuck with me now too” Sarah said, sighing and letting the darkness pulling at her take her as the paramedics laid her on the stretcher.
