Elijah was very carefully attempting not to appear too peppy, too happy. He was very lazy about questioning regarding Ezio at the moment. He was also trying to carefully avoid mentioning that he had spent time with Katherine. It had been pleasant enough, but he was well enough aware of his siblings’ feelings on the matter to keep a few matters to himself. Then again, were they looking carefully enough, they’d have caught on to the conversation that he’d had with Katherine and they’d already know about it.
Either way, he was sure he could talk his way out of things or just pretend to be too engrossed in his niece to understand the conversation that he was having. It was an entirely plausible situation, which was precisely why he was holding her at that moment. Not that he wasn’t happy to have Mareena with him, but honestly, it was easier to avoid any uncomfortable topics while she was around. Mostly. If Kol hadn’t made it a habit of shoving her at him every time he started on topics Kol didn’t want to talk about, Elijah wouldn’t have discovered her apparently power to diffuse situations. He was sure it would work backwards as well.
Kol didn’t know if he’d ever tire of having his siblings around. He was lonely without his Mary Alice, Lonely and entirely too miserable for words, but all thoughts of flipping off his humanity switch were gone. All he needed to see was his baby gurgle and coo at him and he was convinced that life was too worth living. Hell, even his parents forcing their way into the house to see Mareena hadn’t seemed to awful in comparison while he was holding his daughter.
“She has you entirely whipped, you know,” Kol observed from the couch, flipping through his phone. “You’ll easily break and bend to her will and give her her way when she starts to learn to talk. I already know I’m fighting a losing battle,” he said with a small smile. That was the one thing he was having problems with. Smiling. Being happy. He didn’t know if it was okay to be happy anymore. To smile, to laugh.
Elijah looked up, his own smile forming. “We’ll see about that. I’m sure I’ll have a limit somewhere.” He was pretty sure he wouldn’t know what that limit was until he encountered it, but he’d figure it out. Kol seemed better these days, which was good. Elijah was going to be there until he stopped needing him, but even then, he’d be there. He had a bad habit of not being able to look after his siblings. They had Freya and Finn, but Elijah had always felt the weight of the family on his shoulders. He wasn’t upset about it. It was just his job. In a way.
“You’re the one we have to worry about. Probably Rebekah as well.” Niklaus would likely not be in danger, but that was just his way. Finn and Freya were up in the air, but hopefully they wouldn’t be too difficult to get around. He also couldn’t speak for Henrik at the moment. “How have you been doing?” He left his voice casual so that it didn’t sound nearly as concerned as he felt.
Kol was pretty sure that Klaus would be entirely whipped as well. His brother had already sent Kol specialty art pieces that he painted solely for his newborn niece. Faeries, Unicorns and Whimsical creatures that adorned her nursery. Hell, even his parents had already set up a college fund for the baby that was already an impressive $50,000 that would collect interest over the next 18 years.
“Oh I’m definitely already under her spell. She could want the moon and I’d probably try and find a way to get it for her. I mean, look at her,” he smiled as Mareena picked that time to coo up at her Uncle, “wouldn’t you if you had the chance?”
Elijah couldn’t stop the smile that formed as he looked down at his niece. It was impossible not to be happy around her. He was rather in danger of promising her the world almost every time he was there. “I doubt we’d be at all successful when it came to getting her the moon,” he said carefully before turning his eyes up to his brother. “But I’m sure we’ll manage with most of the things she wants. Either way, she will be quite spoiled.” He couldn’t lie about that. Not when he knew they all had the means to give Mareena pretty much everything she could need.
“I like to at least imagine we’ll be able to set some boundaries. For our sake. If not, we’re all doomed.”
“Not true. We could get her a necklace with the moon on it. Boom. She has the moon,” he grinned as he leaned back, putting his hands behind his head, just lounging and enjoying the company of his brother and daughter. “I video chatted with Freya yesterday. She’s already taken by her and she hasn’t even physically seen her yet. Klaus painted all the pictures for her in the nursery before she was even born, Finn and Henrik hound me every day for pictures. She’s only a month old and this entire family is at her tiny little beck and call.”
Elijah laughed. “I suppose you have a point.” The moon on a necklace. He hadn’t even considered it. Really, the could get her a painting of a moon...or Niklaus could paint one. Especially since he had apparently already done some of the paintings. “I guess we’re entirely doomed, then.” He lightly tapped Mareena’s nose, his smile changing just slightly. “It’s hard to believe any of us were ever this small and yet I know for a fact...that you lot were. I’m fairly certain I was born at my current age and in a suit.” Which was not true. He remembered being young and having a lot more siblings after it just being Freya, Finn, and himself.
Kol laughed, “I seem to recall your baggy clothes and grunge phase. I think I have pictures somewhere,” he joked. “So unless you want me to release those to the public…” He smiled fondly, “but you were always a good brother, ‘lijah. Patient. Kind. Finn would easily get frustrated with our constant questions, poor Nik was always getting knocked around, and Freya, being a girl, well, we didn’t exactly have much in common with her. But you would hide Nik and I well in your closet when she wanted to give us makeovers,” he shuddered lightly. “But I can appreciate what I have more now. Our brothers and sisters are all pretty great. And if things keep going the way they are, it’s going to be the lot of us. Forever. And that suits me just fine.”
He pursed his lips as he thought, “I know your day is coming, I almost want to lure the others back here just for them to change….I mean...Freya didn’t, but we could always turn her...but...there is something that bothers me about this...why haven’t mother and father had dreams? For all intents and purposes, Mother should be a powerful witch right now, and father a vampire as well. I mean...I’m glad they aren’t, but...I’m kind of waiting for the other shoe to drop here.”
“I have no idea what it is you are talking about because I have never worn clothes that did not suit my personality. I certainly wouldn’t have had a grunge phase.” Okay, so he didn’t always wear suits, but he would pretend otherwise. He really hoped that there were no pictures of him before this age anywhere. He really didn’t need a reminder.
He winced at the mention of Niklaus. It was still difficult to remember that and know he hadn’t done enough for them. He should have done more. “Someone had to be there for your questions,” Elijah said quietly. Someone should have been there for Niklaus. He should have stopped it. It still weighed on him, but he tried not to show it. “And to keep you from having to deal with the perils of make up.” He had not escaped so easily.
Forever. Forever wa such a long time. He hadn’t had a mind to live forever, but it was likely that he would have no choice in the matter. I know your day is coming. He did not want it to come, but how could he say that? How could he tell his siblings that he dreaded the day that he became a vampire? So he said nothing. “Would you not wish to tell them what they would be walking into before luring them back?” He knew that he had knowledge of the situation, but he was different...and he’d never left. Except for a few work things, naturally. “And I would prefer to gain permission from her before anything happened.” Just turning their sister so she couldn’t leave them? That seemed unkind.
As for their parents? “We will just have to hope that they never dream. If they do, then we will handle that then.”
“Had you been there you would have gotten beaten just as much as I did,” He recalled broken noses and broken bones for getting in the way and trying to block his big brother from attacks. He remembered being beaten with his father’s belt when he had openly and unapologetically called his mother a whore and had suggested that maybe their father start beating on her instead of their brother who had in no way asked for his mother to lay on her back like a whore while another man mounted her like a bitch in heat. He hadn’t cared that his mother had cried, he hadn’t cared that his father had nearly beaten him within an inch of his life for that one. What he did recall was Elijah being the one to sneak into his room at night and check on his wounds. The others were too afraid of their father, and in truth, Kol didn’t want to drag any of them into it. It was bad enough that he and Niklaus were getting it, he didn’t want the others to get it too.
He had hated Niklaus’ real father for never stepping in and intervening, but then again, Mikael had to pass Niklaus off as his. Imagine the scandal if everyone knew that Esther had had a one night stand that resulted in pregnancy. Divorce was out of the question as well. But his parents did love each other, not that he could ever understand why. He didn’t really see anything worth loving about either of them. Why the lot of them hadn’t just walked away or exposed everything…
“You tried to help us the best you could Elijah, and that’s what’s important.”
Elijah was not afraid of being hit. He was not afraid of their father. Even less so now than he had been before. He would not speak nearly so impolitely or crassly about their mother, but he could not help but agree that their mother was the one to blame for Niklaus’ birth, not Niklaus himself. He would protect Niklaus and Kol from their father now. Even if it would end with his being hit as well. At least his father could attempt to hit him. It would not end well for him. “I wouldn’t have cared about that. Not if it could save the two of you.”
His expression grew pinched and he focused on his niece. He wanted the all to be happy. At least his siblings. His parents, he could care less about. They clearly didn’t care about their happiness, so why should he care about theirs?
Kol didn’t need protecting now. He could kill their father with one hand now if he wanted to do so. If he ever tried to raise a hand to Nik again, he’d do it. He rose to his feet and walked over to his brother and looked down at his daughter who squirmed and cooed in her Uncle’s arms. “But we don’t need to focus on them anymore. Even if it’s just you, me and Beks, and Mareena, we can be our own family. Happy, not damaged…” he laughed a little, “well, maybe someday I’ll be happy again.”
Elijah would probably always be of the opinion that his siblings needed protecting, but that was just the part of him that would always behave as if he was the oldest of his siblings. His gaze rose so that he could look at Kol, a hint of a smile there. “I think you’ll be happy again before you know it. I’ll be here until we’re all happy.” Though, at this moment, he was happy. Perhaps not with things he couldn’t change, but he was happy with things that were going on. “I guess I should thank you,” he said after a moment. “If you hadn’t pushed me toward...something I hadn’t really even considered, I think I’d be here far more often and you might get sick of me.”
Absently, he let Mareena grab hold of one of his fingers, sticking it in her little mouth. There were paper towels to deal with that if he found it necessary. “That being the case, however, you could resist the urge to comment on my dick in public. And perhaps ignore Katherine rather than provoking her?” Not that he thought she’d really do anything to hurt him, but he was going to tire of endless bickering if it was going to continue. “I’m not planning on sleeping with her...unless you meant to imply she was going to try to sleep with Niklaus again. Perhaps Finn?”
“It doesn’t feel right. Smiling, laughing, enjoying life. My wife is dead. She wasn’t even 26, Elijah, and she died giving birth to our baby. Am I supposed to enjoy any semblance of life after that? Is it right?” He shook his head, but perked up when he mentioned what he thought he was mentioning. “So...how was your date? I mean...was it a date? Is it more?” If Elijah had found someone to be happy with, Kol really couldn’t care if the person was also a man. Elijah deserved happiness.
Kol’s face slightly vamped a bit into something darker, more sinister at the mention of Katherine. “She needs to stay away from all of you,” he growled. “She will regret it if she doesn’t. I’ll make her regret it.”
“It isn’t easy, but you are allowed to be happy, Kol.” He believed that. But perhaps he was just always concerned about his siblings’ happiness in general. He wanted them all to be happy. Of course he understood that not everything could be happy all the time. He’d be there until Kol could see that he was able to be happy. “It’s okay to be sad, of course, but it’s just as okay to be happy.” There was a hint of a smile at the questions. “As far as I understand it was a date. Unless it’s a popular trend in Italy to make out with your friends. I’m pretty sure it’s not, though. Also I told him that I was likely going to become a vampire and he didn’t run away, so I think that we can say positive things.” He was quiet for a moment. “And there was the matter of him coming over after my first dream, so I think...it’s something.” Something he hadn’t expected at all, really.
Elijah let out a sigh. “Nothing is going to happen, Kol. And I am allowed to choose my own friends. Even if they and my family seem particularly determined to hate each other.” He knew that it would never be something where he could spend time with them in the same place or even remotely near the same place, but he also didn’t feel that it was necessary to avoid her entirely. “So just...leave it alone. For me. I promise I won’t make any of you spend time together.”
Kol arched a brow and a slow smile spread across his face. It wasn’t like Elijah to be this forthcoming with information. So Kol supposed he had the answer to his question, his brother was bi-sexual. Oh man, their dad was going to lose it. He could just see his father turning 50 shades of red, and the thought brought delight to him. “So, you and Ezio huh? When do we get to meet him, you know, other than online. He promised me meatballs,” Kol joked.
“I hate her, but I will back off. For you. And if I’m ever in the same room as her for some reason, promise not to drain her of all her blood and leave her corpse on the floor.”
Elijah was not looking forward to that conversation should it come up. Really not looking forward to it. He supposed it would come up in time, though. He wasn’t planning on hiding Ezio from his family, of course, but he didn’t feel the need to charge into talking to his parents while he was still getting used to it. “Yes.” His eyes narrowed for a moment. “I’ll figure that out. Once I’m sure you won’t somehow manage to chase him off.” It was a teasing comment, but Elijah also knew his siblings and how he reacted to their disapproval. “Did I not bring you food home from the first time we met up? Now you’re demanding meatballs?”
That was good enough for Elijah. “Thank you. I’ll make sure she doesn’t start anything she doesn’t need to either.”
“Have you met me? Has there ever been a time in my life where I didn’t demand things?” He shook his head with a smirk. “But no, I’d like to meet him, I’m not going to say anything rude,” in truth, having Mareena had mellowed him out considerably. “Besides, I think Mareena would like to meet the man that has captured her Uncle’s attention,” yup, when in doubt, use the baby.
