Katou didn’t have any friends that he could go flying with. He hadn’t gone flying for fun since he got his wings. It wasn’t that he didn’t fly at all. As much as he liked his motorcycle and his car (why did people keep giving him vehicles?), sometimes it was faster to make it to work by taking to the skies, and Katou liked sleeping in more than he liked driving.
And now Caleb had his… hand things. “Man, I can’t believe you didn’t tell me as soon as you got ‘em,” Katou said. They’d gone out to a field so that it was less likely they’d be spotted - Katou’s job these days revolved around keeping this strange stuff from the general public - and he was tense with excitement. “You taken ‘em for a spin yet?”
Caleb didn’t go flying often. In fact he had only been a few times since he got the gauntlets. “I wasn’t sure you’d want to,” Caleb offered with a smirk. It was mostly true though, given he had shot Katou the last time he wore them around his friend.
“Maybe once or twice,” he added before starting them up slowly lifting himself off the ground. “Let’s race.”
“What, ‘cause those things are out to kill me?” Katou asked, raising an eyebrow. He also hadn’t forgotten his first run-in with them. “It’ll take more than a pair of metal gloves to scare me.”
He grinned, revealing his too-skinny frame by taking off his shirt. He didn’t want to ruin it when the three large wings appeared from between his shoulder blades. “You’re on, Caleb, but you ain’t got a chance in hell of beating me.”
It didn’t take much to scare Katou. Caleb knew that for sure. The guy wasn’t even bothered that Hanna had received a fuckin’ decapitated head. Still, Caleb was glad he had a better handle on them now.
“Catch me if you can,” Caleb joked putting the gloves on the fastest speed. He honestly had no idea how fast they could go, or even how fast Katou could go. This little experiment was definitely going to be interesting.
Katou hadn’t quite expected Caleb to take off with that much speed, but he recovered from his shock almost instantaneously and took off after him, his wings flapping furiously first to get him off the ground and then to attempt to catch up with Caleb. He grinned to himself as he realized he was starting to close the distance, but his own flights were usually lazy, leisurely things, and he could feel himself tiring quickly.
To be fair Caleb’s gauntlets were doing all the work. Caleb didn’t have to put that much effort or energy into it. Not like Katou did with his wings. But he caught up to him anyway. Caleb just laughed yelling over at him. “Damn, since when can you fly that fast?”
“This is the first time,” Katou wheezed. It was hard to get the breath in him to actually respond to Caleb, but somehow he managed it. “Can we,” he gulped in another breath of air, “slow down a bit? This is fucking,” pant, “hard.”
Caleb just smirked lowering the speed on his gauntlets. “Looks like I won,” he joked. “You owe me a beer.” But yeah, slowing down was fine. He didn’t want his friend to die of exhaustion. Or have him plummet to the ground or some shit.
Katou gratefully slowed down, his wings flapping languidly. He, luckily, wasn’t at any risk of plummeting to the ground - at least not yet - but he did wonder if they were going to be sore in the morning. Or if they even could get sore. Did they even exist after they disappeared? That was probably a question for someone who was smarter than he was.
“Fuck you,” Katou wheezed, reaching for his cigarettes. He stuck one in his mouth, carefully put the pack in his pocket so he didn’t drop it do the ground below, and lit it. Sweet, sweet tobacco filled his lungs in the satisfying way it did only after an intense work-out. “That’s not even fair. Shit, whatdya think it’ll take Stark to build me a pair of those things?”
“Don’t be such a sore loser,” Caleb shot back, smirk on his face. Going that fast had definitely been a rush, but this slower pace was nice too. He could enjoy the flight and the scenery a bit more. “Honestly? With how interested Tony was in your arm, I’d say he’s more likely to make improvements on that than your own set of gloves.” Besides Caleb liked to think he was the only one that got the privilege of having them. It made him feel special.
“It’s hardly losing when your opponent cheats,” Katou snorted, the grin on his face negating his words. Maybe not entirely fair, given the fact that he knew exactly what he was going up against when he agreed to the race.
Katou glanced down at his arm, not sure how he felt about the prospects of improvements. On one hand, having some kind of energy blaster installed like the one that had knocked him on his ass in Stark’s lab would be badass. On the other hand, the idea of someone digging around in his arm kind of sketched him out. It wasn’t his real arm, but then, neither was the rest of his body, even if his body was more organic than his arm was. “We’ll see,” he said after a moment. “Maybe he’d give me bigger finger blades.”
It was far from cheating. They were both flying the only way they could. It wasn’t Caleb’s fault his took less energy. Instead of responding though he just rolled his eyes focusing more on Katou’s next comment. “Oh yeah. Bigger blades is just what you need.”
“I’m glad you agree,” Katou said, completely ignoring any sarcasm in Caleb’s tone. “Maybe one of them energy guns that knocked me down.” He winked, and took another drag of his cigarette. He hesitated for a moment, then nonchalantly asked “by the way, how’ve you and your chickie been since that whole head thing?”
Somehow Caleb had a feeling Tony wouldn’t agree to that. The guy barely trusted Caleb with the gloves. “You can work that out with Tony,” was all he said before the conversation suddenly switched topics.
“Things with Hanna are good. Calm for now.” No more decapitated heads. “You find a guy that gives you butterflies and make your heart skip beats yet?” Of course there was some joking to Caleb’s words. But while they were on the subject of relationships might as well ask.
Katou had to arrange his face into casual indifference before Caleb could realize how unexpected the question was. There weren’t a lot of people who knew that Katou wasn’t as interested in women as he liked to pretend, and it was even more annoying because there was someone who gave him butterflies, but it wasn’t like Katou could talk about that with Caleb of all people.
“Please,” he scoffed. “Like there’s anyone out there who’s good enough for me,” he said, winking at Caleb.
“My bad,” Caleb joked right back. “How could I forget?” he added with a smirk. Although he had a feeling or at least he hoped that one day Katou found someone that made him as happy as Hanna made Caleb. “Maybe you should lower your standards a bit. So we can all go out. Not that not having a date ever stopped you.” Katou seemed perfectly comfortable hanging out with both him and Hanna, or even Hanna by herself.
Katou really didn’t have any qualms with hanging out with people, whether he was invited or not, and he grinned cheekily at Caleb. “Naw, pretty sure having a date would just distract me from harass - er, paying attention to you and your girlie,” he laughed. Though it did get lonely. It had been over a year since Jin had moved back to Korea, and while Katou’d had a couple of one-night stands in the meantime, they had been few and far between, mostly because he had officially given up on forcing himself to have sex with girls and picking up dudes was hard when you weren’t exactly out of the closet. It didn’t help that the one guy Katou was interested in was totally in love with someone else, even if he did have to admit that that someone else really wasn’t all that bad. It seemed like no matter what life he was in, he just wasn’t meant to end up with the person he wanted to.
He needed to change the subject, not having any interest in continuing down that line of conversation with anyone, especially not Caleb. “Anywho, how much juice you got in those things? Think we could make it to them food trucks in Costa Mesa?”
That was enough on the subject of love for Caleb as well. Yeah he loved Hanna but he didn't need to sit around talking about her for hours. Or fly around. The change of subject was definitely welcomed. “ Not sure. Let’s find out.” Food trucks did sound good right now. And if he couldn't naked it? At least it would be an adventure.
