Halloween had always been one of Lexi’s favorite holidays, because she enjoyed dressing up as different people or things; hence one of the reasons she worked at Disneyland. This year, she had decided to dress up as Harley Quinn from Suicide Squad. Sure, there was bound to be tons of other girls dressed the same way that night, but Lexi thought that her costume was one of the best and besides, she looked good in short shorts and fishnets.
Last year he’d done the Marilyn Monroe and James Dean thing with Caroline. And they’d gone to a haunted house to scare the crap out of some teenagers. This year he was going out bar hopping with Lexi after having spent a considerable amount of time with Bubbles earlier. He wasn’t feeling restricted by things, which was both a good thing (it made him more relaxed) and a bad thing (he was a little more lax on his self-policing).
And he’d gone the superhero route. He was wearing a “Hood” costume from CW’s Arrow television series. Complimentary costumes, for sure. Stefan liked having the hood up, the make-up blurring the shadows over his eyes. It was fun playing with Lexi, too--she always made things more fun.
“Where to first?” There were several bars they liked within walking distance. Stefan didn’t really have a preference.
When Lexi had first seen Stefan’s costume, the first question she’d asked him was whether or not the hood was squishing his hero hair, because what sort of best friend would she be if she didn’t mess with him a little bit? In all honesty, she thought he looked pretty good and thought that they were going to look good together. She was completely prepared for people to assume they were together, because it was what often happened when they went out together and by now it didn’t bother either of them.
“How about we see which bars are hopping and then we’ll decide on our first stop.” She said as they continued walking, but were clearly getting closer because they kept seeing more and more people dressed up going in the same direction they were.
“Hey, that sounds great.” Stefan said, smirking a little. He continued walking along the sidewalk with her, looking around at the others. The more people the better, right? Though, something was … something smelled so good. And hey, it was Halloween, right? They could have some fun. “How about that club? What’s it called?” He asked, motioning down the street. There was a night club where people went to get drunk and dance to really loud music.
Lexi was always aware of the smell of blood around her, but she had things under control and barely batted an eye if a particularly good smelling person walked by. Stefan on the other hand still had a few lapses here and there, but that was the last thing Lexi was actually thinking about at the moment. Right now she was too surprised that Stefan was suggesting a club as opposed to a bar, “You want to voluntarily go to a club? Normally I have to drag you. However, I’m not going to pass this up. Let's go.”
Most of the time Stefan tuned it out. He had to, or else he’d go on a rampage and literally tear people’s heads off. Tonight his guard was down for some reason, and the smells were a little more intense than he was used to. He broke into a grin when she agreed, and let her lead the way to the club.
Inside it was dark and noisy, with the thump-thump-thump of the bass making Stefan’s breastbone vibrate. He felt like a predator again for the first time in ages, and it felt good. After the ID check and cover charge (nothing a little compulsion wouldn’t cover) the pair headed in toward the bar.
“Grab a couple of drinks?” Stefan had to practically yell to be heard over the music--even with vampire hearing. “You’re cute. You’re more likely to grab his attention.” Meaning the bartender. It was a busy night.
Lexi didn’t use her compulsion when it would hurt someone, but to get into a club without paying the cover, that wasn’t so bad. Once inside, Lexi nodded at Stefan’s suggestion, “I don’t know, you’re pretty cute yourself. You could probably get his attention too. The usual?” She asked, moving a little to the music as she waited for his response.
Stefan chuckled. He didn’t bother responding to the bit about him being cute--besides, he was a taken man. And happily so. Just thinking about Bubbles made him feel warm inside. He followed Lexi’s lead to the bar and leaned against it. He had to lean in toward Lexi and raise his voice to be heard. “Yeah, make it two.”
“Two? You’re thirsty, huh?” Getting the bartender’s attention, Lexi ordered them each two beers and handed two of them to Stefan once they were set down on the bartop then left some cash before picking up her own and taking a sip of one, “So, we hang out here for a while then move on?” That was usually how barhopping worked after all.
Stefan chuckled. “I feel like two.” He didn’t seem to have much of a filter at the moment, or much inhibition. And it didn’t seem to matter to him. At least, not now. He took both beers and gulped from one himself. “Isn’t that what we usually do?”
“Well that’s how bar hopping usually works.” Stefan wasn’t usually the bar hopping type, but every now and then Lexi was able to get him to do something he didn’t normally do. “Unless you want to just hang around here.” She took a sip of one of her beers as she watched Stefan.
“Let’s just see how the night goes?” Stefan asked. Then he lifted one of the pints and downed the whole thing in a dozen consecutive gulps. When he finished he smashed the glass in his hand with a triumphant laugh. It felt good to do whatever he wanted to do. And suddenly, the beer wasn’t really quenching his thirst. “We should keep exploring until we find what we’re looking for.”
Lexi’s brows rose as Stefan smashed the glass, “Hey Thor, pretty sure they frown upon you breaking their glasses.” She took another sip of one of her beers as she watched Stefan, “And what exactly are we looking for?” Stefan was definitely acting strangely so she was going to be keeping an eye on him.
Stefan shrugged his shoulders, dusting his hand off on whoever was passing by. “I dunno. Maybe we’ll figure it out when we find it.” He turned to start gulping from the second glass. It felt good not to be all worried all the time. Letting go for just a bit was so freeing.
“Alright. I’ll play along.” Lexi finished off her first beer and took a sip of the second one then hooked her arm through Stefan’s, “Lets dance.” The bar had a small area in the back for dancing and Lexi could keep an eye on Stefan easier that way.
Dancing was good. Stefan nodded. He loved dancing with Lexi. He finished the second beer and was gonna toss the glass aside, but since Lexi told him not to smash it, he set it on a table as they headed to the dance floor. She was the only person in the world who could control him.
Lexi managed to finish off her second drink on their way to the dance floor and she also placed her empty mug down on a table as they passed. Reaching the dance floor, Lexi started dancing almost immediately, her hips moving in time with the music as she reached out for Stefan’s hands for him to join her.
Stefan couldn’t help but grin. Soon he was slipping his hands into hers to let her lead the dance. Stefan could dance. He’d taken Bubbles out dancing a few times, went with Lexi more often than that. He even danced with Anna in the living room of their house sometimes. But no one got him moving the way Lexi did.
Had Lexi still been human the two beers she’d drank so quickly would have had her pretty inebriated already, but being a vampire meant that it took a lot more to make her drunk these days, but that didn’t stop her from having a good time. As Stefan slipped his hands into her’s, she grinned at him as she continued dancing, her pink and blue tipped ponytails bobbing as she moved her body to the beat of the music.
Stefan enjoyed himself--as he always did when he was with Lexi--but he couldn’t help the hunger that was growing within him. He gave her hand a squeeze, then pulled back. “I’m hungry,” he said, slowing his legs and feet until he wasn’t dancing anymore. “We should get something to eat.” And when he said “something” he really meant “someone.”
The way that Stefan said hungry made Lexi pause, a frown crossing her lips, “Stefan…” She had been around him often enough, both in the dreams and in the waking world, when he was under the influence of human blood to know when he was craving it. “Maybe we should go get some air first.” Being around so many bodies with their beating hearts and faint scent of sweat, even Lexi knew when to take a few moments to get herself under control again. For Stefan though, it wasn’t quite as easy.
Some air? Sure. Air was a good idea. It was getting a little stuffy inside, anyway. The music was getting boring. Stefan could hear a little hesitation or concern in Lexi’s voice, and that made him frown, too. Was there reason for her to be concerned? He didn’t think so. He was having a good time.
“Whatever you want,” He said, and offered her his hand. Because Stefan knew that Lexi would never steer him in the wrong direction.
That was the problem when Stefan lost control; he never thought there was anything to be concerned about. “I mean, it’s so stuffy in here.” She took his hand and started towards the door. She was beginning to wonder if it wouldn’t be a bad idea to just head home where it would be easier to get Stefan under control if something happened. Then again, she knew that she couldn’t treat him like a child if there was only a chance something might happen; she’d just have to keep an eye on him.
The pair of them headed for the exit of the club. Stefan liked this idea. It was always easier to find prey outside of a crowded room rather than inside. They could pin someone down in an alley.
Of course with Lexi present, it would probably be harder for Stefan to pin someone down, unless he decided to break her neck first and go off on his own, but she hoped it wouldn’t come to that and she would be able to distract him from his apparent blood lust until they got home. For now Lexi was both best friend and vampiresitter.
