What do you think is the most dangerous piece on the chessboard?
Who: Yang, Ahsoka, Li and Evie
What: Yang and Evie go on a date and Ahsoka and Li help Yang get ready
When: Mid Jan
Where: A restaurant
Status: complete
Rating: PG-13 for flirting
“I can’t believe I asked her on a date.” Yang was having second thoughts. Third thoughts. She came out wearing a slinky red dress that could only be held in place with tape. “Is this too much? Does she even know it’s a date? This is too much isn’t it.”
Ahsoka bit back a joke about poking someone’s eyes out. “It’s fine.”
Li arched her eyebrows as she looked Yang over. “If she doesn’t have a heart attack, then there’s a problem. But try not to worry so much. Just relax and be yourself.”
Meanwhile, Evie was having her own crisis of her own, trying to put an outfit together. She’d gone shopping as she didn’t really have a nice enough outfit to wear. Her suits tended to be more business formal. And as she wasn’t used to wearing heels, she opted for stylish flats. She didn’t need to twist an ankle or something tonight.
“Jacob would not let me live this down if he was here,” she muttered to herself as she checked herself over. She wasn’t wearing her dogtags, the chain didn’t quite go with her outfit, but she did carry them in her purse.
“Exactly. And she’s picking you up, right? I need to make popcorn for this..” Ahsoka glanced at Li and gave her a knowing grin.
It was too much, but it was probably too late to change. Why did Yang even own this dress? She’d bought it on a lark and had never expected to ever wear it for someone. “This is like a fourth date dress.”
“You’re not changing, trust me.” Ahsoka nodded. “It’ll be okay.”
“Again, just relax. You look amazing.” Li looked at Ahsoka and shook her head in amusement. “Leave the popcorn references out of this. Yang doesn’t need that right now.”
Evie left her hair long, putting a little product in it to make it look nice. She took one last look at herself in the mirror, taking in her outfit and complete look for a moment. Then she glanced at the time. “Oh bloody hell, I’m going to be late.” She grabbed her purse, then hightailed it out of there.
Driving in America was still highly terrifying to her. For starters, they drove on the wrong side of the road, and she kept trying to get into the wrong side of the car. But finally she made it to pick up Yang and she went and knocked on the door.
She’d wrestled a bit for other reasons on the dress, but Yang had decided to just let people stare at her arm. The prosthetic she had looked pretty realistic and fit around the stump of her arm in a way that felt and looked natural. It would never actually work the way a hand would, but it was serviceable. The hook would probably throw more people off than anything else.
Yang got up, shooting her friends a look before pulling the door open and …. Staring at Evie. “Wow. I mean hi.”
When the door opened, Yang wasn’t the only one staring. Evie stared right back at Yang. If she was faint of heart, she might’ve died on the spot. She didn’t know where to look, but her eye wasn’t draw to the hook or the prosthetic. There was a massive amount of cleavage and a lot of leg and Evie had trouble remembering words for a few moment.
“Uh. Hi? Yes. Hi.” She said as she cleared her throat and tried to pull herself back together.
Yang’s hair remained down and loose. She didn’t like tying it back unless she was depressed. The state of her hair was often a clue into her psyche. She ran her hand through her hair, then leaned over to grab her purse from the table. “You look amazing. Dashing even. Told ya.”
She gave Evie a confident grin, even as her skin seemed to turn red under Evie’s eyes.
Ahsoka leaned over and whispered a bet into Li’s ear.
“Thank you, though you look way more amazing than me. Stunning, really.” Evie responded with a smile. She felt her temperature rising, but tried not to make it so obvious. At least she wasn’t wearing sleeves so she could hopefully cool down faster. “Are you ready to go?”
Li was definitely going to take that bet as she eyed Yang and Evie.
Unaware of any bets, Yang let Evie lead her out of the apartment, and then took her arm. That was what people did, right? It had nothing to do with skin contact. Evie’s reaction was making her feel really good. “...I hope I didn’t over dress or something.”
She couldn’t even pun she was so nervous.
There may have been a slight flush to her cheeks when Yang took her arm, but she embraced it. She led Yang back to her car. It wasn’t anything special, just a standard car that got her from point A to point B. “No, you didn’t overdress at all. You’re fine. More than fine.” Out of both habit and nerves, Evie started leading Yang to the driver’s side, which she thought was the passenger side until she opened the door.
“Oh bollocks, I’ll never get used to this,” she muttered before leading Yang to the other side of the car and opening the door for her.
Yang laughed, squeezing Evie’s arm and pressing against her for a moment. She let got, then slipped into the car while trying to not fall out of her dress. “Children in the back seats of cars cause accidents, but accidents in the back seats of cars cause children.”
After Yang was in, Evie went around to the driver’s side, then laughed. “Well, it’s a good thing there are no children in the backseat, and neither of us can knock the other up.” She only kept a straight face because she was focused on starting the car and checking the directions on the google maps app on her phone. Once she had them, she started off. She drove a bit more carefully than was probably necessary, but being on the right side of the road still wasn’t natural to her.
It was probably best that Yang didn’t touch her right now. She folded her hands in her lap and smiled. She wasn’t sure she wanted her first time in the back of a car, but she was really interested in that being with Evie someday. Or at all. “That was a really bad one wasn’t it. I’m a little nervous, I’m not on punoint tonight.”
Evie tended to be more traditional when it came to romance. The back of a car was not high on her list of places to have sex, but that could change, depending. Evie wasn’t certain about Yang, but she knew she liked her. But one step at a time. “It’s alright, you’re not the only one who’s a little nervous.” She’d like to say she hadn’t done anything like this in a few years, but it was more like she’d never done this before.
“So this is a date, right?” Yang sounded like she was certain it was and was only mostly joking. “Just to make sure. I mean you got the door for me and everything.” It had actually been really sweet and kind of romantic, and while Yang could get the door herself she hadn’t really minded.
And then came the use of the d-word and Evie glanced at Yang out of the corner of her eye. “It can be? I mean, I’m not opposed. It’s been nearly a decade since the last time I went on a date. But yes, it can be a date.” Evie was possibly rambling a little out of her nerves.
The use of the word ‘decade’ startled Yang a little. Evie didn’t look that much older than her, but then she could have had a date at sixteen or something. She wasn’t too picky as long as Evie wasn’t thirty. “I’d like it to be a date.”
Evie definitely wasn’t thirty yet, so they were good there. Sometimes she felt way older than she was, but that was probably the war experience. It had aged her in ways not many could understand that hadn’t been in similar situations. “I’d like that, too. So. It’s a date.” Evie said with a smile.
“A date.” Yang put her hand on Evie’s arm for a brief moment. “I guess that tingly feeling I got when I met you was common sense leaving my body.”
“Tingly feelings aren’t always good things, you know,” Evie said teasingly. “Though if you are left without common sense, then where did it go?” She was definitely teasing.
Somewhere between her legs, Yang decided. She kept that observation to herself, instead replying, “The same place it goes when you’re about to jump out of an airplane. Exciting and scary at the same time and either way you’ll end up going splat.”
Which sounded like dating in general.
“Some splats are better than others.” Evie was more of a daredevil than she seemed to be. She would definitely skydive, bungee jump, things of that nature. Most simply wouldn’t think of her that way upon just seeing her.
She then pulled into the parking lot of their destination. “Here we are, and I didn’t need to consult the directions while in transit!” She smiled, clearly proud of herself for successfully navigating American roads.
“Yeah? What kind of splats?” Yang was curious about it. She wanted to live a life of adventure, though her arm had derailed her plans a little bit she was recovering enough to find ways around it. To not let her disability hold her back and to work with it, even. “Don’t tell me you like to jump out of airplanes. You know the hardest part of skydiving is the ground right?”
Evie looked over at Yang with a smile. “Actually, yes, I do. I’ve done it a few times, never stops being a thrill.” Her smile turned into a smirk. “Only if your parachute doesn’t work properly.” She then got out of the car and went around to open the door for Yang.
“I.” Yang almost blurted out about the time she’d been launched off a platform into a forest and had had to come up with a landing strategy. Her weapons had proven to be very effective at both propelling her and ensuring she could slow down enough for a soft landing.
But she didn’t know if she’d sound crazy or not, so she shook her head. “Never mind.”
She got out of the car, having to lean forward as she did so, but she didn’t really mind if Evie got an eyefull. That was kind of the point and at this point she was just going to have to own her decision to wear this dress.
Evie definitely got an eyeful as Yang got out of the car. She did stare for a few moments, then her sensibilities got the better of her and she lifted her gaze. Though keeping a grip on herself was going to prove difficult when Yang wore a dress like that. “Are you the type to skydive?” She was perhaps a little excited at the possibility. An affirmative answer would mean they would definitely need to go skydiving some time.
“Yes.” Yang answered so quickly she nearly stumbled over the word. Anything with that kind of danger and adventure was right up her alleyway. She had to stop herself from finding an excuse to touch Evie, and then realized did she need an excuse? She took her arm.
“Well then, perhaps we should go skydiving sometime,” she suggested. Assuming that this evening went well, of course. When Yang took her arm, she led her inside. “I, uh, hope you’re hungry.”
“I’m so hungry I could eat an Ursa.” Yang grimaced. What would Evie know about Grimm? “Or something really big and gigantic. Like a horse. But who would eat a horse?” Yang had been a horse girl as a kid. She’d even gone riding quite a few times. She looked damn good in a cowboy hat.
The sushi place was flashy and new, with very modern decor. The view wasn’t too bad, but Yang was too busy looking at Evie to notice.
Evie had no idea what an Ursa was, but she didn’t comment on it. “I know I would never eat a horse.” It had been years since she’d ridden one, but she had taken riding lessons as a child. That was a skill that one never forgot.
The restaurant was definitely classy, and Evie liked it, though her personal tastes tended to be more old fashioned. Nevertheless, she could appreciate beauty in all its forms. They were shown to their table and Evie took a seat. “You certainly have good taste.”
“They’re too friendly and kind,” Yang agreed. “I miss riding them. I miss riding anything.” She frowned down at her arm, then shrugged. “Gonna order something to help with my motorcycle. A kit to move all the controls to the left handle. I’ve got a friend who’d probably be able to install it.”
She just needed to ask Ahsoka first. “I heard this place was good and has amazing sushi. But honestly I’d go just about anywhere.”
Evie smiled gently. “That is good that you are doing that. Hopefully it’ll help move you forward.” She didn’t want to pry much into how Yang had lost her arm, such topics tended to be extremely touchy. Evie would simply let Yang tell her the story in her own time.
“Then clearly it shall be a treat, and one I look forward to.” She brushed some hair behind an ear.
Yang still didn’t really have a good explanation for nondreamers. It was an accident. That was about the only way she could describe it. Part of her hoped Evie dreamed. Part of her didn’t, because that first hope was a little selfish. “I’m gonna try the unagi.”
Evie had seen mentions of dreams on the Valarnet, but hadn’t commented. She for one was subject to vivid dreams, especially about her time in Afghanistan, so she didn’t judge what others dreamed. “I am going to try the ahi.”
“Good choice.” Yang brushed her hair out of the way, though she used it as a shield to hide the way she was looking at Evie. She wished she’d read more flirting tips beyond a variety of puns and most of those were kind of lewd.
Though if it made Evie blush….
Evie smiled, giving her order when the waiter came. She then sat back in her seat to relax a bit. After the waiter left, she smiled. “So since you’d go skydiving, what about bungee jumping?” Might as well find out about all of that, see what else they could do in the future.
“I’ve always wanted to tie a rubber band to my foot and jump off a bridge, almost as fun as sparring.” Yang responded, grinning hugely. “You can do anything to me.”
She blinked. “With me.”
Evie also blinked and flushed a bit. She took a drink of her water to give her time to recover. “That’s good to hear. I like being adventurous.” She almost mentioned rock climbing, but then remembered Yang might not be comfortable enough to try that yet, so she kept her mouth shut on that.
Oh, Yang liked it when Evie’s face turned pink. She needed to get that expression on her face a lot more often. “If I could go to school to be an adventurer I would.” That had been her motivation to become a Huntress, for the most part. Helping people had been a nice bonus. “Wouldn’t that be an amazing major?”
Yang didn’t know that old slang for lesbians was a ‘female adventurer’ but if she did she would love it.
“That would be one of the best majors, actually,” Evie said with a fervent nod. She certainly wouldn’t mind getting a major in adventuring. It would be something she’d certainly use. Not that she really needed a major considering her job sometimes took her on adventures around the world, but that wasn’t the same thing.
“Imagine it? Going around, jumping off of tall things, fighting monsters, winning tournaments!” Yang was sure she’d have won the Vytal Festival Tournament if...whatever had happened to her hadn’t happened. She still didn’t know what had really happened to disqualify her. She’d thought about it a whole lot, too. The whole world has seen her injure a downed opponent, but she’d seen him attack her.
Granted, she’d have had to get past Pyrrha to win, which was easier said than done. But still!
“Definitely! It would be amazing. Certainly an excellent test of skill and the like as well.” There was more to jumping off of things than simply jumping. It was an art form that needed practice to perfect. But it was no less thrilling regardless of how much or how little skill one had.
Yang would punch her fists together under old circumstances, but instead she gave Evie a thumbs up. “Hit me up any time. Sparring, sky diving. I really need more excitement in my life.” The idea of sparring was particularly appealing but then getting thrown around by a hot woman was high on the list of Yang’s favorite activities.
“Then you should get some excitement. Excitement makes life worth living.” Within reason, of course. Evie had excitement, she just didn’t take it to an extreme. She had her own rules and method of conduct, and she wasn’t one to break them.
Their orders arrived and Yang had a sudden dilemma she hadn’t really thought through. She’d never used chopsticks with her left hand. Sure, she was coordinated with it, especially as she’d been training her arm for months now, but she was afraid she’d embarrass herself. Her concentration face included her tongue sticking out of the corner of her mouth, but she managed to pick up a roll.
Evie noticed the way Yang seemed to hesitate and be slow on using the chopsticks with her left hand, but she didn’t quite call attention to it. It would clearly take time for Yang to get comfortable using her left hand for things. Perhaps she could help with that. She took a bite of her ahi. “Mm this is really good. How’s yours?”
“It’s delicious.” She groaned, eyes fluttering, then put her chopsticks down so she could wipe her mouth of some soy sauce. “I don’t even got the right words for how good it is, it’s just good.”
“Do you want to try some of my ahi? I’m willing to share.” Evie offered. It certainly hit the spot, she had to say.
“Only if you want to try my roll,” Yang counted. She grabbed one with her chopsticks and held it up, waggling it a little at Evie. “Say ah.”
She chuckled a bit and leaned forward, opening her mouth. “Ahh,” she said obediently. This was more flirting than she’d done in a very long time. It felt strange, but she wasn’t backing away from it just yet.
It was really nice, and Yang’s face and chest flushed as she lifted the roll to Evie’s face. Her eyes were focused on Evie’s lips and mouth and she swallowed nervously as she watched.
She chewed the roll, managing to mind her manners and not say anything until she’d swallowed the food in her mouth. “That is really good!” She took a sip of her drink before she picked up some ahi with her chopsticks and held it out for Yang to try. “Your turn.”
“Mm… “ Yang leaned forward, taking the unagi in her mouth. It was like at least three fanfictions she’d read recently, and it was actually really kind of awesome. “Mmmm...!”
She kind of wished she’d gotten that instead. Her eyes met Evie’s. “I’m really glad you said yes to this.”
Evie smiled. “I’m glad you asked. I...needed this.” Getting out and socializing was something she certainly needed. It wasn’t healthy for her to always stay in and read or do research related to her work. She was a workaholic, but the war against terrorism never stopped, so she didn’t either. At least not for very long.
“You don’t get out much do you. Except to run into armless girls at the gym.” Yang had plans for the rest of the evening. She didn’t know of Evie liked to dance, but she thought they could try that chess thing. Yang was in need of a good opponent, and chess would ensure she and Evie could stay close longer.
“No, not really. Though I do enjoy running into armless girls at the gym.” Evie chuckled. She hadn’t even celebrated the holidays this year, having instead spent them alone with a phone call to her brother to ensure he was still upright and having a good holiday.
“Why don’t we make a regular thing of it. I mean not always dinner. But the gym. Sparring.” There was that sparring thing again. Yang was trying to not sound too eager. “Chess? I’d like to get you between a rook and a hard place.”
She’d been holding it in all night.
“I would certainly like that. Let’s do it.” Evie responded with a nod. It would be something to look forward to. At least at times when her job didn’t require her being elsewhere, of course. She laughed at the pun. “You may find that it’s not so easy to get me caught between a rook and a hard place.” She teased.
“I don’t know about that. It might be easier than you think. My favorite position is some Queen on Queen action.” Miraculously, Yang’s grin didn’t falter even if she kind of wished she could take that one back as soon as she’d said it.
“I suppose there’s only one way to find out.” Evie responded. And then her cheeks flushed a bit at the queen on queen remark. “Well then, I...suppose that is something.” She cleared her throat a bit and promptly stuck a piece of ahi in her mouth. If only her dreams had started, she’d have some more rook puns and comments to make.
Yang winced, then focused on her sushi a little more thoroughly. Why was she coming on so strong? This wasn’t usually her. Puns aside. She just really liked flirting with Evie.
Evie ate a little and took a drink. “What do you think is the most dangerous piece on the chessboard?” She wasn’t quite certain why she was asking that, but she was oddly curious about Yang’s thought on that. The obvious answer would be the Queen because she could move in any direction, but sometimes the obvious answer wasn’t the right one.
“The easy answer is the Queen. She can move anywhere, in any direction. It makes her really strong. The Queen conquers.” Yang sometimes felt more like a pawn than a Queen, especially in her dreams. “But the Knight….she’s versatile. She’s more unpredictable than other pieces. When used correctly with the help of other pieces she can help you win.”
“Good eye,” she commented with a smile. “And we think alike for I tend to put more emphasis on the Knight myself. It’s an intriguing piece that many overlook. But they also tend to forget that a Knight’s duty is to protect the King at all costs. It’s movement may be limited and slightly odd when compared to other pieces on the board, but it can be the most devastating one.” Especially when clever traps were set for the other player’s pieces and they weren’t completely paying attention.
“We’re both just that awesome,” Yang replied. She put down her chopsticks so she could take a drink. “A good player knows that each piece has a part to play, and they’re all interconnected.”
It mean sacrificing some pieces for victory, though. That was the one part Yang liked least. She wanted to protect everyone.
“Precisely so. Every piece has it’s part to play in the larger tapestry.” Evie was more pragmatic about her approach to such things. Being in the military, she knew there would always be casualties no matter how much planning went into something. She didn’t like it, but she could soak the sacrifices so long as those that remained alive accomplished the mission so those who died didn’t die in vain.
“Reminds me of a dream I had,” Yang said. It slipped out, a product of her dwelling on it during their conversation. “Where it felt like events were happening out of our control and we were just pieces of a game someone else was playing.”
“That must have been a strange feeling to have. Though it’s probably a good thing that I’m not one to analyze dreams, otherwise I could probably wax poetic over what it could possibly mean.” Evie said with a chuckle. She did truly think Yang was talking about normal dreams, not dreams of another life that were far more real than dreams should be.
“It might mean I feel my life is out of my control.” Which was true in either event. Yang played with her food a bit, wishing she could share what it really meant and yet glad she didn’t have to. “Rather have different kinda dreams.”
She left that up to Evie, though she wasn’t really thinking all that dirty herself.
Evie thought that was to be expected, after the kind of accident that led to Yang losing her arm. “No matter if it is out of control or not, you have friends who are more than willing to help you.” Evie hoped that she counted among that. “Nothing wrong with that. All of us have strange and different kinds of dreams at times.” Of course, she was talking normal dreams.
“That include you?” Yang asked, a cocksure grin finding its way to her face. “Cuz I’d like to claim you as a friend.” She didn’t think that was too much, and honestly Yang tended to latch onto people and make them her friends whether they wanted to be or not.
Though usually she didn’t go out with them in a dress that might fall off at a light breeze.
“Yes, it includes me. I just didn’t want to presume anything.” Evie wasn’t an aristocrat, but she was refined and proper as though she were one. Her grandmother had been a stickler for manners, and she’d never lost them as she’d grown.
“Presuming is assuming. I didn’t want to make an ass of either of us.” Yang’s foot nudged Evie’s under the table. Evie had that sort of uptight librarian about her that made Yang want to get her hair down, at least a little bit. “But there’s not much that I’m not comfy with and if thereis I’d tell you.”
“Then that’s good that we are on the same page.” Evie smiled, noting the foot nudge. “The same goes for me as well. I’m rather vocal about what I don’t approve of.” Which she was. It didn’t matter how well she knew someone, she’d speak up.
“I think a lot of problems could be solved if people just talked about them.” Yang gestured with her chopsticks. “Whenever I see a tv show or read a book and no one is communicating I want to throw things. Sometimes I do!”
“They could, yes. I also think problems could be solved if people took the time to discuss it before blundering into something blind.” That was one thing that drove Evie up the wall faster than anything else regarding her brother. “I am in full support of communication and making plans.”
“Good to know,” Yang murmured, darting her eyes and then picking up her drink again. “Kind of why I wanted to make sure this was a date. And not assume it was.”
“That is good. I’m glad that we got that straight.” Evie said with a smile. For the moment, her nerves had faded away, though it was entirely possible they’d make a comeback as well.
“I don't know what straight you got but it isn't me,” Yang countered, a large grin on her face.
“I’m still trying to figure that one out,” Evie responded with a laugh. Evie had never really thought about her sexuality, she’d been too busy with other things. And Jacob wasn’t exactly straight either. “Or perhaps I simply miscalculated.” She teased.
“If you call the way you can’t keep your eyes on my face to be miscalculation. But I do have the breast jokes around.” As if to emphasize her point, she leaned forward a little bit.
At the statement, Evie flushed and really did try not to look down when Yang leaned forward a little bit. However, she couldn’t help it, her gaze dropping down to the cleavage that was somehow being held inside the dress. She cleared her throat, then took a sip of her drink to try and compose herself. “Yes, well, it’s a bit difficult to miss.”
“I once fought this girl who kept insulting my weight and calling me top heavy and it almost made me lose the match.” When Yang got angry she got angry. She couldn’t help the way her body was and most of her weight was muscle weight. “We were cool after though. She apologized after we kicked her ass. Besides, cleavage is the only thing you can look down on and approve of at the same time.”
Okay that joke definitely made Evie laugh. “Unless you’re shorter than the cleavage you’re trying to look down on and approve of,” she teased with a smirk. “But at least she apologized. It’s not as though you can help your body type.”
“If you’re shorter, than a hug is a real faceful and a little bit like heaven,” Yang pointed out, sounding like she’d be willing to offer that to Evie regardless of their height. “I like to think I’m gifted.”
And again, Evie flushed. She wasn’t short, but a hug would certainly be pleasurable at any rate. “You-” her voice cracked a little and she cleared her throat. “You certainly are gifted.”
Despite Yang’s grin, there was an embarrassed blush on her cheeks. “You’re going to be thinking about that all night aren’t you.”
“Maybe.” Evie responded, though by the tone of her voice it was obvious the actual answer was yes. She brushed some hair behind an ear and attempted to compose herself again.
Yang's grin widened and her face grew even darker red. Evie was really cute when she was flustered and Yang wanted to fluster her more. “Tell me if I’m making you uncomfortable, but I can be a comfy cushion.” She’d always wanted to be a comfortable cushion.
“No, no it’s fine.” Evie wasn’t used to being flustered. The closest she got to flustered tended to be when Jacob made her so angry she forgot how to speak English. Which wasn’t the same thing, of course. “I imagine you would be a comfy cushion, yes.”
Yang briefly entertained the idea of what it would be like to kiss Evie. The shocked expression that would probably be on her face and how far the blushing would spread over her face and ears. Then again, she’d never really had any kissing experience and would probably suck at it. “Do you get out enough to watch any movies? Is there anything you’ve wanted to see? We could watch something after dinner. Or find a chess board.”
“Sometimes? I mean, I’m not exactly in the know of what’s out, I don’t pay much attention to that. Jacob tends to keep me informed on that sort of thing. But I wouldn’t mind a movie or chess.” Either way, it would be more time out of her flat. And if some crisis went down that needed her attention, she had a phone.
"Why not both? And we could even up the ante a bit on chess with some wagers." Add a bit of excitement to an otherwise cerebral game.
“I do enjoy a good wager,” Evie responded with a smile. “I would certainly be open to both a movie and chess.”
Oh boy, what had she gotten into? Yang nodded, grinning. “Anything you might want to see? That you’ve heard of I mean. Or I could just surprise you.” She lowered her voice. “I like surprising you.”
“How about you surprise me? There’s not much I won’t watch.” Despite outward appearances, Evie didn’t mind horror or slasher movies. She liked historical movies, even if inaccuracies sometimes drove her up the wall, but she enjoyed them for what they were.
"Something with action and a little romance, how does that sound?" Yang felt like she was flailing in the wind but she was really enjoying it.
“That sounds good to me!” Evie smiled. She hadn’t anticipated the evening taking a turn like this, but she didn’t dislike it, not one bit.
Faced with the prospect of a movie and stripchess, Yang quickly finished her meal. Rolls and rice and even the soup. It was a really excellent soup. “If we hurry we can catch a movie.” She needed to text Li, too.
Evie also made short work of the rest of her food. It was all really very good. “Alright, just let me know where we’re going so I can look it up on google maps.” Seriously, google maps was an amazing app.
Yang gave Evie the cross streets, while sending Li a text.
>> Taking her to a movie after dinner
>> Got any romantic ideas?
>> how do seduce?
Evie punched the streets in and got the directions. She finished off her drink while the waiter brought their check.
>> Dinner and a movie is already pretty romantic!
>> Unless you’re asking for movie ideas
>> In which case I’m the wrong person to ask
>> As for seduction, be cool
>> Maybe start with little touches to her arm?
Yang smiled.
>> I guess it is. Never really done this before
>> Okay I'll be cool and hpoe the movie we pick doesn't suck.
>> Like put my arm around her?
>> She keeps staring at me, in the good way
>> I think that’s a good sign
“I’m ready to go, are you?” She was already getting up, and leaned over on the table.
>> Just relax and it’ll be fine
>> Yeah like that
>> Or hold her hand
>> That’s definitely a good sign!
“Yeah!” Evie said, putting her wallet back in her purse, then she looked up and promptly came face-to-face with Yang’s cleavage. She blinked and stared, then cleared her throat. “Yes. I’m ready.” She got up and tried not to stare, though she was a little flushed.
Yang took Evie's hand for the walk to the car, praying her hand wasn't sweating. It meant she couldn't respond to Li, but she thought that Li would understand.
"I guess we'll figure out what's playing when we get there."
Smiling, Evie headed to the car with Yang, hand in hand. Oh she knew that Jacob wouldn’t let her live this down if he knew about this. Which was precisely why she wasn’t going to tell him. Unless he could tell through their twin bond, but that was kind of cheating. “That works for me.”
At the car, Yang took her phone out, and leaned into Evie so she could take a picture of them together. Then she took one of Evie, and then one of herself alone so she could send it to Evie. A little bit of teasing her. “I can’t wait until I drive again.”
Evie made certain to smile for the camera when she realized that Yang was taking their picture. It was certainly a nice touch to commemorate the evening. She smiled warmly at Yang. “I have little doubt that you will be able to drive again soon.” Yang was determined, Evie had learned that much in their interactions thus far.
“Thanks. I’ll take you out on my bike sometime,” Yang promised. She started to slide her phone into what would usually be her boob-holster before realizing her dress didn’t really allow for that.
“That would be fun. I’ve only ridden a motorcycle once before.” It would also be something that would be least expected coming from her. Evie tended to be reserved, not out there riding motorcycles. She saw where Yang started to put her phone, then cleared her throat again as she got in the car.
“Really? Only twice? Oh wait until you see mine, she’s called Bumblebee. Because she’s yellow.” Yang paged through her phone to show her a picture. “I got her from-” my dreams. “For Christmas one year. Are you okay? Something in your throat?”
“She’s certainly beautiful.” Evie said, looking at the picture. And she was. Evie wasn’t exactly one to know what made some vehicles pretty and others ugly, aside from paint scheme, but Bumblebee was definitely beautiful. “No, no I’m fine. Really.” She attempted to cover.
“Thanks, she’s my baby.” Yang had a couple motorcycle puns, but she was saving those for a later date. Or a later Date as the case might be. Yang stretched, slowly and deliberately. “I’m sure you’re fine.”
The stretch also attracted Evie’s eye, though she tried not to look too long. After all, Yang’s breasts could slip out of the dress at any moment. She flushed again. “Yes, I am fine.” Though she was mostly just repeating it than actually believing it. Was Yang trying to kill her? She was certain she was. Those breasts were dangerous.
If Evie wasn’t looking she might miss out on those breasts slipping out. Except Yang had used that special tape so that probably wouldn’t happen. Probably. Yang reached over and patted Evie’s leg. At least this was the correct hand for that kind of thing. “You’re real cute when you blush.”
This was potentially a catch twenty-two moment because while Evie might have an interest in seeing those breasts slipping out, she also didn’t want to see them now. It could lead to a car accident. “Am I? I couldn’t say either way.”
“Is this a common thing? The whole stiff upper lip?” Yang didn’t want to crash much either, so she left it at that. Okay so she had a comment but she was going to save that for when they got to the theater. She just hoped there was something paying that wasn’t crappy.
“I’m English, it’s kind of in my genes.” Evie said with a humorous tone. Though it was true, she definitely had the stiff upper lip thing in spades. She tended to keep things to herself, for better or for worse, and tried to push on with her life.
Finally arriving at the theater, she found a place to park and pulled in, killing the engine. “Alright, now let’s see what we have to choose from.”
“That’s good to know.” Yang fell silent for the rest of the trip. She got out of the car, an act that required more coordination than she expected it to. “You know, once we’re in a dark theater you won’t be able to be so easily distracted.”
There may also be something more too it than just a stiff upper lip, but Evie wasn’t going there at this point. There was nothing in her personal code to dissuade her from dating. Getting out of the car and locking it, she looked at Yang, eyebrows raising a bit as a little smirk crossed her face. “Are you planning to try and distract me?”
"Yes." Yang grinned back at her, leaving it up to Evie's imagination just how distracting her could go. After all, a lot could happen in a dark theater. She bounced on her heels, then walked towards the ticket booth.
Evie eyed Yang a bit suspiciously. She didn’t know if she should dare wonder just how distracting Yang could be. At any rate, she just shook her head in amusement and followed after Yang, glancing over the titles of the movies that were out. “Have you seen any of these movies yet? Perhaps that’s a better place to start at.”
"I've seen a couple of them. And I know which ones I don't wanna see." She wasn't a fan of some of the movies currently out, and it was hard to pick one that would be entertaining without also being kind of stupid. "Star Wars? Sing? Underworld? Resident Evil?"
Something exciting maybe. Not too boring.
She thought it over for some moments. She had actually seen the previous Star Wars movies. She thought she’d seen an Underworld before. “Star Wars? Unless you’ve already seen that one and don’t want to see it again.”
"My roommate would never forgive me if I said no to a Star Wars movie," Yang said, stoppnig herself from mentioning that Ahsoka was a Star Wars. "It's pretty good, and actiony!"
And tense enough to warrant snuggling. She hoped.
“Well, we can’t have your roommate holding a grudge for that! Star Wars it shall be then.” Evie said with a smile. Perhaps in time she’d come to realize there were “fictional characters” that were very real around Orange County, but right now she simply thought fiction and reality were two very different things.
Yang slipped close to Evie, leaning against her, her hand brushing down Evie's spine and resting on her lower back. Eventually Evie would understand the fictional thing. Or at least her dreams.
"I call dibs on sitting on your right." She glanced at her and winked.
Evie shivered as she felt Yang’s hand slide down her spine. It was nice to feel and sent some tingles through her body. She chuckled a bit. “That’s fine with me.” Stepping up to the ticket person, she asked for two tickets for Star Wars.
Tingles were nice. Yang wanted more of them. “Just… like having my fleshy arm on this side.” Yang still hoped for something better than what she had for her right arm, but she hadn’t dreamed anything new in months. Probably a good thing.
Popcorn was a necessity, as was soda. “Ever have a date try the hole in the bottom of the popcorn trick?”
“I certainly don’t mind that.” Evie said with a smile. She didn’t mind either arm, but Yang clearly was still adjusting to the prosthetic. And she wasn’t about to make her uncomfortable if she could help it. “No, I haven’t. Have you?”
“If some boy ever did that I’d punch his lights out. And that would be after I punched him in the balls.” Because there were somethings Yang wouldn’t tolerate and that was it. “Though I’d be a lot more forgiving if a girl wanted my hands on her chest or something. That’s a hint.”
Evie laughed initially, which then turned into more flushing at the hands on chest comment. “Well, I am not precisely planning to put a hole in the bottom of the popcorn bag. I’d, uh, probably go other routes if I wanted someone’s hands on my chest.” And she got a little redder as she said it.
Yang had enough of a grip with her prosthetic that she could carry the popcorn under one arm and her drink with her other hand. She looked down at her chest. “This is the worse possible thing to be wearing when eating popcorn.” Or possibly the best.
Evie had to chuckle a bit. “At least you would be able to feel it fall down your cleavage better?” And have an easier time finding it, but Evie was keeping that part quiet. She didn’t want to open herself up to more teasing than absolutely necessary.
“Are you imagining helping me?” Yang had to rely on Evie for the door, since her hands were full. She didn’t mind. It let her give Evie a flirty look as they headed for their seats.
And then she flushed again. “Um, well, potentially? I mean, if you’d let me or want me to. Maybe?” She held the door open for Yang, then followed after her to their seats. At least it was going to be dark in the theater during the movie, though she was certain if her face turned red during it, Yang would still be able to see it.
Yang took a seat, putting the popcorn between them. She didn’t pull the stretch move just yet, but she was saving that for the right moment. “We don’t get the scroll. The yellow text stuff. It goes right into the movie.”
Evie sat down on Yang’s left, like she’d asked. She took some popcorn and started to eat it. “I don’t know whether to be disappointed by that or not.” It was a staple of the Star Wars movies to have the scrolling text at the beginning, after all.
“I guess they’re going for a more intimate experience.” Yang’s hand brushed Evie’s, and her face flushed a little as it did so. Rogue One wasn’t the most romantic movie ever, but it was fun and exciting and Yang preferred that. But she had a secret romantic side too. Just don’t tell Weiss. Ever.
“Ah, I see. I suppose that makes sense.” Her cheeks also flushed a bit when Yang’s hand brushed hers. Evie was a terrible romantic, in all honesty. Sometimes she felt she should’ve been born in an earlier era when people actually properly courted each other. Of course, living in today’s world made it easier for same sex partnerships, but Evie tended to highly enjoy the whole getting flowers, romantic poetry, and so forth.
Yang could pick that up a little. She stroked her finger along Evie's knuckle, then rested her hand over Evie's. She wondered who she could ask for advice for ‘wooing’ a particularly romantic woman.
It was odd how Evie felt like she belonged more in a time period like the Victorian era at times. She’d probably find irony in that once her Dreams started. She had to smile a bit when Yang rested her hand over hers. After a few moments, she turned her hand over so she could hold Yang’s hand.
It meant yang couldn’t eat any popcorn very easily, but that was a small sacrifice to make for the tingling running up her arm and the heat flushing down her chest. She leaned her shoulder against Evie’s. “The robot is the best.”
This was going to be...interesting. But Evie was going to see how this went. So far, she liked this. “Aren’t the robots always the best in the Star Wars movies?” Evie countered with a smile. She always had liked R2D2 and C3PO, and she’d liked BB8. They had a knack for making fun robots.
“This robot is special,” Yang assured her. K-2SO was the sassbot to end all sassbots, though she’d never met HK-47 so she was vastly uninformed as to the ultimate Star Wars sass droid. “I think you’ll like him.”
Meanwhile, Yang’s shoulder devils were trying to get her to make a move.
“Well then, I’m looking forward to it.” Evie said with a smile. She was definitely looking forward to the robot. Not that she wasn’t before, but it had just gone up in her expectations. Suddenly she was even more excited for this movie. She liked the Star Wars movies, but she wouldn’t call herself a diehard fan of them. But she could understand the hysteria because they were, mostly, good movies.
Except the prequels. Those had not lived up to the hype she’d expected for a Star Wars movie.
Yang’s roommate had spawned out of the prequels, so they weren’t all that bad. The cartoon anyway. She faked a yawn and put her arm around Evie. It was the most corny and obvious thing but at the same time it was one hundred percent Yang. She saved any other comments, as the movie was getting serious.
Evie hadn’t really noticed Yang’s arm going around her, she’d been focused on the movie. However, when she did finally realize it, she did flush a bit and feel a bit flustered. She didn’t pull away or try to shrug Yang’s arm off. Instead, she eased into it, leaning into her a bit.
That went well. Yang leaned into Evie a little as well, able to feel some of the tension. There was nothing between her arm and Evie’s back and shoulders but skin. She felt warm, and tried to focus on the movie, instead of how close Evie’s shoulder and head were. She was one with the force and the force was with her…
There was quite a bit of skin contact happening, and Evie felt like it was getting warmer in the theater. Yang felt warm. Even as the movie became more serious, she still remained aware of the skin contact. She was handling it well, settling into it.
Yang’s hand trailed lightly up and down Evie’s arm as the action in the movie grew more intense. She was especially keen to see how Evie reacted to Vader, and to the inevitable end of the entire cast. Part of her had been angry the first time, but now she thought that was the only way for the story to end. They were martyrs. Like Pyrrha.
The hand moving up and down her arm sent tingles through her. Now, when it came time for Vader’s Grand Entrance, Evie had to love it. She even gave a little clap, considering casting the long shadow was a good way to make an entrance. Early on in the movie, Evie had had a feeling that this was the kind of movie where everyone died. After all, she seemed to recall something about a lot of people died to get the Death Star plans from the first movie.
“Anakin and his extraness.” Yang snerked. She kept her fingers tracing lightly across Evie’s skin, just the tips and so softly that it was like she was barely touching her.
“Fitting, especially when he’s exerting his dominance on the situation.” Considering Vader tended to make those under his command fear him, it was very fitting. At the light touch, she shivered lightly, but didn’t move to stop what Yang was doing.
“Of course he has a nice view of where he burned up.” Yang quipped. Her touch remained light and seductive, moving from Evie’s arm to her shoulder, then along the curve of her neck.
“Of course he does.” He had to keep the hate and anger burning, so why not have a view of where he’d had the fateful fight with Obi-Wan? As Yang’s touch moved to the curve of her neck, Evie shivered again, this time a bit more noticeably. Apparently that was a sensitive area for her. Still, she didn’t pull away.
That reaction only made Yang want more. She kept her hand there for the rest of the movie, fingers stroking at her skin. There were sensitive areas below and behind the ear too, and Yang sought those out.
And one by one, the Rogues become one with the Force.
Each little touch made Evie shiver. It was something she hadn’t felt in a very long time. Or, ever really. She couldn’t remember anyone else making her shiver like this before.
And as each member of Rogue One became one with the Force, Evie found herself teary-eyed. Especially when Cassian and Jyn died at the end. Then there was that added emotion when Leia turned to face the camera at the end. That she hadn’t expected.
Yang turned her head and used her own shoulder to wipe her eyes so she didn’t have to move her hand from Evie. “Become stardust, huh?”
Somehow, that part spoke to her, and how far people should and could go when the cause was just.
Sniffing a bit, she nodded. “Yeah,” she answered as she brushed some tears away from her eyes. “That movie was really good, though. They did a really good job with it.” Especially for already having known the basic story of the plans of the Death Star were stolen and lives were lost to get them.
“I think so too. But then fights against impossible odds always kinda gets me.” She patted her chest with her artificial arm. “Right here.”
“I like them as well, and they tend to get me more than simple struggles against normal odds.” Evie was one who liked going up against impossible odds and beating them. Wasn’t that basically her job description? Trying to weedle out the actual potential terror threats from the fake ones?
“Hopeless battles, and finding the hope in them.” Maybe Yang wasn’t quite the same optimist like her sister, but she was an optimist none the less. She tried to get up without flashing Evie in the process. Next time she was going to wear a dress that was a little easier to move around in.
“There is always hope to be found.” Sometimes Evie had a hard time finding it, but she knew it was there. She was an optimist and tended to not get down often. Though she sometimes became despondent after particularly bad fights with Jacob, but she tended to keep it to herself. She got up and stretched her back a bit. “I’d say that was an evening well spent, wouldn’t you?”
“Yeah, it was a great evening.” It was probably too late to play chess, but Yang was hoping for something a little more hands on. She held her hand out for Evie to take as she stood.
Evie smiled, taking Yang’s hand when it was offered. She brushed some hair behind her ear, then started to head out to the car. “So, um, what next? If there is a next, tonight, that is.” And now came the awkward portion where Evie was in territory unfamiliar to her.
This was the part that could either be awkward, or not. Yang tried to read Evie, to get an idea of where she stood on things. She wanted to ask someone, but decided she could muddle through well enough on her own. “What’s next is kind of an intimate form of communication. If you want to try.”
And then Evie flushed. Intimate form of communication had a few different meanings. Or maybe stages was a better way to describe it. Was Yang wanting the whole package, as in sex? Or something more like a kiss? It was best to clarify things before Evie stuck her foot in her mouth and assumed something. “You mean like a kiss?”
“Yes, what did you think I meant?” Yang could guess, and she sidled up against Evie as she replied. “I’m more of a second date kind of girl for more than that.” Or a never date if she was honest. She had no idea how to handle anything.
“I just wanted to be sure. I’m definitely not a first date kind of girl for more than that.” Evie didn’t have a set numbered date that she’d have sex on. She wasn’t a virgin, but she’d only gone that far about twice. “But I could certainly do a kiss.”
“Do you..want to now?” It was really, really cold, which was obvious in more ways than one, but Yang would freeze for a chance at a kiss. “Or save it for good night? I think that’s what they normally do on dates.”
“If you ask me, the good night kiss is the more romantic option.” Evie responded. She was a little nervous, mostly because she hadn’t kissed anyone in years. She might be rusty at it.
Waiting in the car was going to be unbearable, but Yang just nodded her head. She grabbed the driver’s door to hold it open for Evie. “I don’t wanna rush to the end of the night, but I kinda want to rush to the end of the night if you get my drift.”
Evie smiled. “I do get your drift. I can drive slow?” She teased, then decided to give Yang something to hold her over, and she leaned in and kissed her cheek before she got in the car with a confident smile on her face.
Yang’s cheek burned from the kiss there, and she got a stupid smile on her face as she walked around and got inside. “Not too slow. Some things can’t wait!”
Laughing, Evie started the car and pulled out of the parking lot. “Alright, I won’t drive like a granny.” She grinned and drove slightly above the speed limit. Not enough to get them pulled over, of course. She wasn’t about to ruin their night like that.
“You’re way to sexy to be a granny.” Yang said, then corrected herself. “Scratch that, you’d be a hot granny.”
She put her hand on Evie’s leg, which was probably dangerous right now, but Yang liked to live dangerously.
Yet again, Evie flushed a bit. “Uh, thank you.” Not that she had plans to be a mother, yet alone a grandmother. She was too focused on her job to think about a family. But who knew what the future held? She was still young, after all, though she did seem to be older than she was.
Yang just winked, and stroked her finger up and down Evie’s knee. “You’re welcome, granny hottie.”
Tingles ran up Evie’s leg and she suddenly found herself a little distracted that she almost missed the turn she needed to take. “Bloody hell, sorry!” She apologized after a turn that was a little too sharp.
“Woo!” Yang laughed. Just what she needed, a little excitement. To make it worse, she moved her finger up Evie’s arm, and then across her shoulder to the back of her neck.
And then the car swerved when Yang’s fingers reached the back of her neck. Cursing, Evie straightened the car out and promptly reduced her speed a bit. “Seems like someone’s wanting to ride a rollercoaster.”
“That’s not the only thing I want to ride,” Yang said, her expression like the proverbial cat and canary. She felt momentary guilt about Blake, but she couldn’t expect to pine for someone she might never have change to meet.
“Oh, bloody hell,” she commented under her breath, her grip tightening on the steering wheel. In fact, if she wasn’t trying to keep the car on the road she’d probably be staring wide-eyed at Yang.
Yang virtually cackled. She continued to stroke at Evie’s neck, right where spine met skull. For Evie’s sake, she said nothing more.
More tingles ran down her spine from the way Yang was stroking the back of her neck. The top of her head also tingled and she rather liked the sensation, even if it was entirely distracting. Again, there was a sharp turn that she nearly missed. But finally, she arrived back at Yang’s place without crashing the car. “There. Safe arrival.” Evie declared as she drew in a breath and looked over at Yang.
Yang grinned at her, her fingers moving into her hair. She looped some around her finger. “My hero.”
“I do what I can,” she responded with a smile. Evie looked at Yang, knowing what she’d promised, and felt a little nervous. She could’ve announced her intentions, but they both already knew what was coming. So instead of running the risk of sounding corny or silly, Evie simply leaned in to give Yang that kiss. On the lips this time.
Sensing Evie’s nervousness, Yang had been about to tell her it was okay if she didn’t want to when Evie kissed her. It was a nice kiss. Evie’s lips were soft and welcoming and it was only Yang’s second ever kiss but she really wanted to get more experience thanks to both Li and Evie.
Yang’s lips were warm and soft. It had been a long time since her last kiss, but this was certainly nice. Evie did her best to make it a good kiss, and after some moments, she broke the kiss and pulled back a bit. “That was very nice.” Evie smiled.
“Yeah…” Yang grinned, and giggled a little. She was suddenly wracked with nerves, for all of her flirting earlier. “It was a good night, thanks…”
“You’re welcome, though I should be thanking you for asking me out in the first place. Otherwise I’d have stayed in all night doing work of some sort. This was better than that.” Evie said with a wider smile.
Yang obviously bit her tongue to stop herself from making the obvious come-on ot Evie’s all night statement. Instead, she smiled wider, her stomach fluttering. “I didn’t know if you’d say yes, but I just had to ask.”
“Sometimes taking a risk pays off. And it’s always fun taking the leap of faith.” Oh how that statement was ironic, considering the Leap of Faith was a very literal and integral part of Assassin training.
“Leap of faith, I like that.” Yang searched for a reason to delay getting out of the car, but she couldn’t think of any that wouldn’t be embarrassing. “Kind of like choosing this dress.”
“The leap of faith it took to choose that dress did pay off. You look amazing in it.” Evie managed to be suave despite the distracting dress.
“I’ll send you the pictures I took,” Yang promised her. “Then you can look whenever you want.” Somehow, she managed to get a winky face in her voice.
Evie blinked a bit. “Ah, yes. Thank you.” She managed to not croak out her response. She took a breath and managed to compose herself. “I enjoyed tonight quite a lot.”
“Me too.” Yang hesitated, then snuck one more kiss before she carefully got out of the car. She probably wouldn’t wear the dress again, at least not unless a date ended up in a hotel room. But It had had the desired effect and she was really happy about that.
She returned the kiss and smiled, watching Yang head inside. She waited until Yang was inside before she headed back to her own flat. The evening had gone better than she’d anticipated, she even felt a little giddy about it. At least she’d gotten out and done something fun for a change. Perhaps there was more of that in the future. And Evie wouldn’t be opposed to that.
