Anne had text Constance in a bit of a state. She’d done something incredibly foolish and needed her best friend’s consolation. Curled up on the couch in her slouching jumper and scrolling through her phone, she waited for her best friend’s knock on the door.
Constance wasn’t sure what had happened with Anne but she knew her friend had been upset, or as upset as you could in a text, so she’d rushed over to see what she could do. A bottle of wine in her bag just in case.
Raising her hand she knocked on the door of her friends place and waited for her to answer.
Hearing the knock, Anne unfurled herself from the couch and moved to open the door. Peeking out of the gap between the door and the jam, Anne pushed the door to and unhooked the chain to let Constance in. “Hey, thanks for coming,” she smiled at her friend, stepping in to hug her.
“Anytime you know that” Constance said wrapping her friend in a proper hug and stroking her hair, “Come on, let’s get the kettle on and you can tell me everything” Because of course, any news needed to be accompanied by tea. They were British after all, mostly.
Anne sighed and nodded, tucking some hair that had fallen from her messing top bun behind her ear. “Tea sounds good,” she said, following Constance to the kitchen. “And chocolate,” she opened one of the high cupboards and reached right to the back to pull out a large bar of Cadbury's chocolate.
“Oh god, it’s a man isn’t it?” Constance said when Anne retrieved the large bar, “Cadbury’s big bars and tea always mean man trouble” she wondered who she was going to have to have words with as she retrieved the mugs from the cupboard, knowing Anne’s kitchen almost as well as her own.
Anne sighed and came to stand next to her friend and rested her head on her shoulder and nodded forlornly. She stayed there for a minute then moved off to the couch while Constance finished off with the tea. “I think I made a mistake. You remember I told you about Jim?” she asked, folding her feet underneath her.
Constance pressed a kiss to the top of her friends head before gently pushing her towards the sofa, “I remember” Constance said, pouring the boiled water into the cups, she should have known he was bad news. What sort of name was Jim in this day and age?
“I slept with him,” Anne told her flatly, staring into the space on the table where she’d placed the chocolate bar.
“Well that in itself isn't a bad thing, unless he was awful. Was he awful?” he didn't seem the sort to be bad but who knew. Squeezing out the bag she put milk and sugar in and took them to the living room, sitting next to Anne.
“Please, the man was made for that sort of thing,” Anne sighed, running a hand over her hair. “That’s probably why he’s got like four other women that he’s seeing,” she admitted bitterly and reached to open the chocolate.
“Ah. So he’s a player arsehole” Constance said giving her friend a sympathetic look, “I’m so sorry Anne, you deserve far better than that”
Anne nodded and sighed as she broke off a piece of chocolate and offered the bar to Constance. “I really like him. Liked him,” she told her friend. “Why can't guys just be straightforward and uncomplicated? Or am I over thinking things?” she asked before putting the small chunk of chocolate in her mouth.
Constance took it and broke off a chuck for herself, “Generally because guys are stupid” she said with a look of it’s sad but true, “Did he make you think it was serious? Like did you talk about stuff?” she asked picking up her tea now her hands were free.
“I hoped it could be something…” Anne shrugged. “We talked a bit...before we...y'know,” she sighed in defeat. “I know I shouldn't have done it but...I guess I still had hopes,” she admitted. “I’m so stupid!” she sighed and sat back against the sofa.
“You aren’t stupid” Constance told her, perhaps somewhat naive but really it was obvious which meant Jim had taken advantage - at least in Constance’s eyes. “He’s an arsehole and you wanted to be loved, it just didn’t work out. You aren’t to think it was all you”
“I don’t even know why I did it,” Anne rolled her head on the back of the couch to look at her friend sadly. “He was just...there, and gorgeous and I just...I was lonely I guess,” she sighed. “And now I don’t know what to do! I’m...not the kind of girl to go around sleeping with just everyone and anyone. I just really liked him,” she covered her face with her hands before reaching forward again for the chocolate.
“It’s not a bad thing you know. Finding someone you like and sleeping with them, at least he was gorgeous” Constance said, “If it felt good at the time then don’t beat yourself up about it. Just learn from it” She didn’t want Anne to feel bad about herself just because she’d slept with him.
Anne huffed in response and looked down at the chocolate in her hands. “I will. I don’t ever want be a number on some guy’s list of conquests again,” she told her quietly, breaking some more chocolate off. “What do I do about Jim? Do you think I can still be friends with him? I mean, I’m not going to lie and say I don’t want to...jump his bones,” she admitted, offering the chocolate to Constance.
Taking the chocolate Constance broke a bit off as she considered her answer, “If you can stay strong even when he turns on the charm then yeah you can be friends but if you’re likely to sleep with him again and end up kicking yourself over and over then I’d say you probably need to steer clear”
Anne groaned miserably and rolled to lean on Constance’s shoulder. “You have no idea how much charm this man has got,” she grumbled. “I’m going to have to go cold turkey, aren’t I?”
“I think so” Constance said, “I think we should maybe invest in a regular delivery of Cadbury’s from home for a while huh? And make sure we have lots of tea”
