Liv’s current brain was of some skater dude. It seemed to be one of the brains Leon actually enjoyed. Most of the time he seemed annoyed by her personality changes. But then most people didn’t. Including herself. Still she was taking advantage of this and dragging Leon to the skate park with her on their lunch break.
“This is going to be sick,” Liv commented as they arrived at the park.
It had been a long time since the last time Leon had been to a skate park. Most people wouldn’t have guessed it if they’d met Leon, but he used to spend a lot of time at them when he was younger. Once Harry had moved away, Leon spent less time at the park, and after his mother had died he’d sold his skateboard and had never stood on another one again.
But Liv’s new brain almost made him want to ride again, especially once he sat down on the bench and was watching teenagers poorly executing their own tricks. Instead, he unwrapped his veggie burger and got comfortable, prepared to laugh his ass off at Liv. “Have you ever even been on a board before?”
“Um, duh,” Liv replied. After all she had been on the brain for a few days now. “I have my own board too,” Liv said holding it up to show him. It was fairly cheap. Because well she knew soon enough she’d be over this skating thing. But whatever it worked. “Now, show me what you got.” He could eat later.
“Me?” Leon asked, blinking in surprise. “Not a damn chance.” He bit savagely into his burger as if to punctuate his statement. It had been a long time since the last time he’d been on a skateboard, and he wasn’t about to embarrass himself in front of Liv and all those judgemental bastard teenagers behind them.
“You are such a wimp,” Liv said with an eyeroll hoping onto her skateboard and taking off. She wasn’t going to wait around for Leon to finish his burger and get off his damn ass.
Leon was not a wimp, and was about to argue with her before she took off on her skateboard. It was not wimpy to not want to humiliate himself in front of a bunch of people he didn’t know. But he watched her as he angrily chewed his veggie burger. She wasn’t too bad, and he never would have guessed that she likely hadn’t done any skateboarding before she was on this brain.
“Fine,” he said, once she finally made her way back to him. “Give me that thing.”
Liv popped the board up handing it over to Leon. She smirked to herself, knowing her words had knocked some sense into the detective. As far as her own skating skills went? As soon as she ate her next brain they would be gone again anyway. So it wasn’t like Leon had much to worry about it. “I promise not to laugh too much when you wipe out.”
“You’d better not laugh at all,” Leon said, pointing threateningly at her. He put the board on the ground and pushed off. It took him a couple of pushes before he really felt comfortable on the board, and he couldn’t help but wonder why he’d stopped skateboarding in the first place. Of course, most of the time he’d gone boarding with Harry, and then Harry had moved away, which probably had something to do with it.
A little more speed, and he thought he felt comfortable enough to try a kickflip, and while his landing was a little shaky, he was impressed about the fact that he actually managed to land it. He turned to Liv, still moving on the board, to give her a gloating grin.
Liv clapped her hands slowly a few times and Leon’s triumphant, or somewhat triumphant landing. “Way to go Leon,” she replied not even a bit sarcastically. While it would have been fun to make fun of him, perhaps the skater part of her personality wanted to. The part that was still her, more Liv, was happy for her friend. That he could still do something he clearly enjoyed. But then skater!Liv took back over. “You’re not as bad as I thought you’d be.”
Not as bad as she thought I’d be. Leon snorted. Sufficiently egged on, Leon decided that he could probably show off a little more. He was starting to feel a little more confident with his board legs under him. It wasn’t quite like riding a bike, but it was starting to come back to him. Determined to prove to Liv that he totally knew what he was doing, he sped toward one of the rails. He jumped his board and landed on the rail, both surprised and pleased that he’d managed it, and made it to the bottom. Unfortunately, once his board slid off the end of the board, Leon lost it under his feet, and crashed down hard on his ass.
Well now Liv just couldn’t help but burst into laugher. Still she walked over to him and held up her hand to help him up. “Maybe you shouldn’t show off,” Liv commented since it was clear that was what he was doing. “I don’t want you to hurt yourself.”
Leon took a couple of moments trying to get his breath back, and then he took Liv’s proffered arm by the forearm and hauled himself up. He bit back a retort that it was her own fault that he’d been showing off, and instead gingerly rubbed his soon-to-be-bruised backside. “I’m getting too old for this shit,” he muttered after a moment.
“Nice try.” That was clearly no excuse. “You do know we are like the same age right?” Maybe a year a part at most. “But if you want to pack it in, I won’t hold it against you.” She was teasing, mostly. Although judging by that wipeout maybe Leon should take a break before he hurt himself.
Leon snorted. “Yeah, well, some of us don’t have powers,” he said, and then stopped. He guessed if someone wanted to be obnoxious, they could point out that most people couldn’t talk to animals either. Still rubbing his behind, Leon frowned at Liv. “I think I’m going to sit this one out,” he said after a moment. His pride didn’t sting nearly as his ass did. “Show me what that brain of yours can do.”
