Finals were finally over, which meant that Percy could enjoy a couple of weeks with no homework. He, his mom and Paul had already made a few plans to do together, but for the most part Percy was looking forward to just doing nothing.
The end of finals and Christmas break starting also meant that Annabeth would be going home to see her family for the holidays so they had made plans to get together before she left. It would also give Percy a chance to give her her Christmas present. He hadn’t known what to get her since he’d never bought a present for a girl before, but when he saw the owl charm bracelet, he’d thought that was perfect considering he had a tendency to call her Wise Girl in their dreams as a result of her mother being Athena.
They had planned to meet at her apartment then go get coffee so Percy had headed to her and Thalia’s place and upon reaching it rang the buzzer for their apartment.
--
Annabeth was just finishing wrapping his gift when the buzzer rang. She quickly cleaned up before rushing over to let him in. Despite being excited for Christmas, she was a little sad that she wouldn't be seeing her friends for awhile. She was already considering coming back early.
Opening the door, she smiled at him. “Hey, sorry. I was finishing my wrapping. I didn't mean to keep you waiting. Come on up.” She stepped aside to let him in and then made her way back into their apartment. “Are you excited about Christmas break? How did your finals go?” Annabeth was feeling a little nervous and she started to ask a million questions to cover that up.
--
Percy couldn’t help but smile back at Annabeth before walking past her to go into the apartment, “Yeah. I’m really excited about spending it with my mom and Paul. I’ve got to show you the pictures of the light display me and Paul did.” He turned back towards her once they were inside, “My finals went well. Pretty sure I passed everything. How about you?” That was probably a dumb question cause even though Annabeth probably had the same disadvantages that all Demi-gods had, she was one of the smartest people he knew and even in the dreams she never seemed to let their disadvantages affect her.
--
“I would love to see that,” she sad closing the door behind her. “I'm pretty excited to see if my dad did anything this year. Not really getting my hopes too high, but I guess we will see.” Things with her dad still weren't perfect, but she was trying to give him the benefit of the doubt. It was Christmas time, after all.
She smiled and plopped down on the couch, patting the seat next to her. “Finals were great. I feel pretty confident that I did well. I studied long enough for them that I had better do well.” No one wanted to see her when she didn't do well. It wasn't pretty.
--
Once inside, Percy followed Annabeth towards the couch as he took his phone out of his pocket so he could bring up the pictures, “Are you saying that your dad doesn’t decorate for Christmas? Like not even a tree?” He couldn’t help but wonder what Annabeth’s life was like at home at her dad’s place. He knew what it was like in the dreams and wondered if it was anything like that. “That’s great. I figured if either of us was going to do better, it’d be you.”
He brought up his pictures and selected the first of the set of Christmas lawn display pictures and handed the phone over to Annabeth.
--
“He's just not very good at it. He sort of has to for my brothers, though.” Annabeth shrugged a little bit. The whole family thing was still weird for her. It didn't help that dream her felt the same way. The dreams sort of made everything seem more awful. “Maybe I'll make sure there are plenty of decorations this year.” She smiled at him as she took the phone from him.
The pictures looked so much better than she expected. “These are great, Percy! I wish my family got this into it.” She continued to look through his pictures. “What do you mean if one of us was going to do better it would be me?” Annabeth looked up at him, confusion written on her face.
--
“I can only imagine what they’ll do for other holidays now that we’ve got the space,” Percy took the phone back and put it into his pocket, “I just meant that you’re the smart one. The Wise Girl,” He smirked at her, as he shifted his position on the couch. “I don’t think I’ve ever asked before if you have dyslexia and ADD too. I mean, all demi-gods do, right?” He hadn’t intended to bring it up, but he was curious now.
--
“Sounds pretty amazing, if you ask me,” she said with a smile. Annabeth nodded at him. “Right. Wise girl. Seaweed brain.” She wasn't entirely sure how he felt about the name, but in her dreams it seemed to be more of an endearment now. “Yeah, but I think being a daughter of Athena helps. Not that that has anything to do with this world. It's not really something that's holding me back any, though. If that makes sense?” Her head tilted slightly as she looked at him. “As far as I know, and from what dream me has said, it's a part of us simply because our brains aren't meant to function like normal people.”
---
“Yeah, you have a bit of an advantage,” Percy said, smirking a little. Since their brains weren’t wired to function like normal peoples’ as a result of being demi-gods, he had to work harder when it came to school work and while it was tiring at times, it had paid off. “Hey, so, I’ve actually got something for you.” Percy said taking the small gift box out of the pocket of his hoodie.
--
Annabeth smiled at him, her cheeks turning slightly pink. “Percy! You didn't have to do that.” But she was more than happy that he had. It was a sweet gesture, and she couldn't help the way her stomach flipped. Even if she didn't know what it was yet. “I actually got you something too,” she said as she stood up. “Wait right there!” Annabeth pointed at him and moved into the kitchen to grab his gifts. “Here.” She held out a plate of blue cookies and another wrapped box. “I hope you like it.”
---
“I know, but I saw it and I couldn’t not get it for you.” When Percy had seen the owl charm bracelet he had known right away that he had to get it for Annabeth. “Now, see, I would have felt like a jerk, if I hadn’t gotten you anything and you’d gotten me something.” Percy smirked as he watched Annabeth go into the kitchen. When she came back, his smirk grew into a wider smile when he saw the cookies, “Seriously? This awesome.” He took the plate and the box from her.
--
Slowly, she opened the box. Her face instantly lit up when she saw the charm. “Percy, this is awesome! Thank you!” She picked it up out of the box to examine it up close. “This is really thoughtful.” Annabeth didn't think there was anyone who had gotten her such a thoughtful gift. The fact that they had both gotten each other gifts that represented their dreams selves made her smile. “The cookies are the best part,” she said with a smile. Inside the box was a simple framed picture of the temple of Poseidon. She had considered a trident flask, but thought that maybe she should wait on that one.
--
Percy couldn’t hide the smile that spread across his lips as she reacted to the gift, glad that she liked it, “You’re welcome. I’m glad you like it.” Now his turn, he glanced back to the box she had given him and opened it, “Wow. This is pretty cool.” He lifted the frame out of the box, sea green eyes taking in the various details of the temple, “I’ll have to find a good place in my room to hang it.” Glancing back at Annabeth, he was about to say something else about the picture when he felt a sudden urge to kiss her. Sure, he’d had that same urge other times over the last few months, but this time, he leaned forward, thinking of nothing else, but kissing her.
--
“I love it.” Annabeth wanted him to know that she really did appreciate the thought that went into her gift. She smiled at him again. “I think that sounds like a plan. I'm pretty good at hanging things. I could always help.” It didn't occur to her what she had just said, but that was partially due to the way Percy was looking at her. Annabeth suddenly froze, all thoughts leaving her head, as she watched him start to come closer. This had to be a dream because this all seemed too easy to her. But Annabeth felt that same urge and she felt herself moving forward just like him.
--
Percy had only kissed one other girl before and that had been during his junior year in high school and it hadn’t ended well. Kissing Annabeth was everything he had imagined it could be. However, as quickly as it had started, it ended. The cause of Percy’s sudden kissing compulsion had been a piece of mistletoe that had somehow snuck in with him when Annabeth had let him in and now that it had done its job, it vanished, causing Percy’s eyes to snap open once he realized what he was doing.
Without thinking, he pulled away, eyes wide as he stared at Annabeth, the feeling of her lips still on his, “I….um….I didn’t mean that...I mean…” He wasn’t sure what he meant.
--
As quickly as the urge had started, it ended. At least to some degree. Her heart was beating wildly
In her chest. Percy had just kissed her. She had just kissed him. And now they were just staring wide eyed at one another. It should have been a good thing, but by the look on Percy’s face she could tell he wasn't so certain.
Annabeth licked her lips, and continued to stare at him. “You didn't mean to kiss me?” She couldn't help the hurt she felt. “Right, that was an accident.” She immediately put up her walls, not wanting to put herself out there or let him know he had hurt her feelings.
--
“No...I…” Crap, he knew that he had just totally messed up. He might not have meant to kiss her at that moment, but it wasn’t like he hadn’t wanted to. He had no idea how to fix this and he knew that the longer he sat there, the worse he was going to mess this up. Luckily, at that moment his phone buzzed and he pulled it out of his pocket to see a text from his mother, “Um...I’ve got to pick some stuff up for my mom.” This wasn’t the ideal thing to do, but he needed time to think. He just hoped that Annabeth would still talk to him once he’d had time to process what had happened.
--
They were probably lucky his mom had texted him. He hasn't meant to kiss her and she didn't think she could sit there much longer with him. Annabeth had been worried about something like this all along. What if this ruined their friendship? She couldn't help but wonder if they would ever be able to go back to the way it was. Somehow she didn't think they could. “Right,” she said, standing up to show him out. “You don't want to keep her waiting.” She moved quickly towards the door without really looking at him. “Thanks, again, for the owl charm.” Now she wasn't so sad she was going home.
