Spencer felt ridiculous. She’d visited Emily’s mom, looking for Emily, and then wandered over to Toby’s house. And that’s when things got weird. So when she and Emily got in touch after the holiday, Spencer said she’d love to meet for coffee--anywhere but Emily’s house. Her friend already thought something weird was going on with Spencer and Toby, and Spencer didn’t want to add fuel to that fire.
So she suggested Baxter Bakery, and headed over there to meet up with her friend.
As far as Spencer and Toby went, Emily had mostly been teasing her friend about Toby, but that didn’t mean that she wasn’t curious about what Spencer thought about Toby. She was also looking forward to seeing Spencer so they could catch up more than they’d had time for when her and Hannah had run into their friend at UC Irvine so when Spencer suggested they get coffee, Emily agreed.
Emily reached Baxter’s just after Spencer and spotted her right away as she walked in the door, “Hey. Have you been waiting long?”
Spencer was standing in line. It wasn’t particularly long, though the lady at the front was taking her sweet time deciding. When she heard Emily come up behind her, Spencer turned and gave her friend a smile. “No, not long. I’m just itching for my caffeine fix. How are you? How was your Halloween?”
“It was fine. I just stayed in with mom and passed out candy.” While Emily enjoyed dressing up when she could, Halloween wasn’t really her holiday. Christmas was Emily’s big holiday when she would go all out. “How was yours? Did you go out?” The woman at the counter finally finished her order and the line moved up, putting Emily and Spencer a little closer to the the counter.
“Yeah, um… I went out.” Spencer didn’t want to say something to Emily about trick-or-treating at her house and then stopping by Toby’s after. She felt a little bad that she hadn’t said hello to Emily after knocking on the door and saying hi to her mom. But something had drawn her in a different direction, and Spencer couldn’t ignore it.
Then there was kissing. Lots of kissing.
Spencer went a little pink. “My costume was a hit. People loved the flapper costume.”
“Oh! My mom mentioned you had come by, now that I think of it.” Between trick or treaters, Emily and her mother had been watching movies and Emily had fallen asleep for a short time during them and she assumed that must have been when Spencer stopped by, “That’s probably when I was asleep. Who did you go out with? Anyone I know?” The next person in line moved making them next.
Spencer stepped forward in the line. “No. I stopped by and said hi to Toby on my way, though.” Oh, God, Emily was sure to see the red on her cheeks now. Spencer gave a little cough.
Emily couldn’t help the way her brows rose at the mention of Toby’s name and a bit of a smile crossed her lips, “Toby, huh? You just stopped by to say hi?” Finally they reached the front of the line so Emily was unable to really grill Spencer for more details; she’d have to wait until they were seated.
Thank god they reached the front of the line and Spencer didn’t have to answer any hard questions about Toby. She placed her order for lunch, and motioned to Emily to do the same. Then Spencer was going to pay for both of them. No arguments.
Once they’d ordered and were given a number, Spencer led the way over to one of the booths and slipped into it. She dug out her phone just to check really quick for messages. There were only a few, and they were from people she studied with. Nothing pressing. She put the phone away again.
Spencer might have thought that this particular line of questioning was over, but Emily was determined to find out what exactly had happened with Toby to cause Spencer’s cheeks to redden the way they had. After placing her order, Emily followed Spencer to the booth and sat down across from her friend, “So….as you were saying, you stopped by Toby’s on Halloween?” She wasn’t letting Spencer out of this one.
Spencer sighed. Of course Emily wasn’t going to let it go. Any why should she? Spencer was acting like a complete and total fool over the whole thing. “Yes, I stopped by Toby’s house on Halloween. I don’t know what came over me, I just… I felt like going, so I did. I was being really impulsive around Halloween. I felt… drunk, and giddy, I don’t know why.”
Emily’s brows rose slightly as she watched her friend, “Spencer Hastings doing something impulsive? I’m shocked. So, what else happened? Or did you just stare at each other?” She took a sip of her drink as she waited to see where else this story was going.
Spencer couldn’t meet Emily’s eyes at that. She blinked, staring down at the table. This was strange for Spencer. She normally owned up to the things she did, good or bad. And most of the time they were good. This time, though, she was… embarrassed. It was a new feeling. She gave a little chuckle, finally deciding it was time to come clean. “No. We did a considerable amount more than stare.”
Emily couldn’t help it as a smile slowly spread across her lips, “More? How much more?” Sure, she didn’t want all the details, but if something had happened between her two friends, Emily did want to know that.
“We kissed.” Spencer admitted. She was breaking into an embarrassed smile, and going very pink. “A lot.”
“And how was it?” Emily’s smile widened into a grin as she watched Spencer. She had teased Spencer before about Toby, but now that she knew that they had kissed, she couldn’t help but get a little excited. Spencer and Toby were both her friends and she thought they would make a cute couple. “Who initiated it?”
“Um….” Spencer couldn’t believe she was having this conversation. She hadn’t felt this way about a boy in a while. She’d fooled around with Joe-the-Mechanic not too long ago, and he was fun. But she didn’t get that excitement in her belly the way she got when Toby’s tongue was in her mouth. It was a strange thing--she felt like a teenager with a crush for Toby.
“I did. And it was good.” She admitted, breaking into a smirk at the memory. “Really good.”
Emily was still smiling as Spencer admitted how she’d felt about the kiss, “So, do you wanna kiss him again?” She had teased Spencer about Toby before, but that was before Spencer and Toby had played tonsil hockey, “I mean, are you gonna see him again in that way?”
Was it hot in here? Spencer might have guessed that her cheeks were on fire. Seriously, did someone turn up the heat? Also, why was her collar on so tight? Spencer cleared her throat, and lifted both hands to cover her burning face. “I dunno! I don’t… I think so? I would. If he asked, I would. I guess? I think? I don’t know.” She’d just turned into a blubbering idiot and she hated herself for it.
“I think you should totally ask him out. For dinner or coffee or something.” Emily took a sip of her own coffee, “I mean, you obviously have to talk about what happened. You can’t just have a major make out session then never talk about it again.” Besides, it was obvious why Spencer’s reaction that she wanted to see Toby again.
“I’m not that kind of girl, Em. I’m not the kind who asks boys out on dates, you know that.” Spencer said, then buried her burning face in her chilly hands. It helped to make her feel slightly better, though she was still a little embarrassed. “Besides, if he wants to talk about it, I’m sure we will. If he wants to see me again, all he has to do is ask.”
Emily quirked a brow at Spencer, “Now, I may not be an expert on guys, but aren’t they known for not being very good at talking about things like this? I mean, sure, I’ve met some girls who also weren’t that good at it, but don’t guys usually take the cake on that sort of thing?”
“Maybe.” Spencer shrugged. “Anyway, let’s… talk about something else. I’m sure if things are meant to happen, they’ll happen. And if not, then… not.” She had so many other things on her mind. Even though this one was front and center, the other things were important, too. “Tell me how things are going at school.”
