Bubbles and Stefan had planned to get together today, but the texts from Stefan had concerned her. It meant that she made her way over to his, Lexi, and Anna’s place a little early. She looked a little more frazzled than normal. Her hair was a mess and she hadn’t done that much with her make up. She hadn’t even spent the normal amount of time trying to look cute. She’d gone with jeans - it was snowing after all - and a t-shirt with a blue sweater and a black peacoat she wasn’t entirely certain belonged to her, but it fit and she’d gone out. It had been snowing off and on since the beginning of the month and she’d had to get used to dressing for the occasion.
When she got to the door, she knocked before testing the door to see if it was unlocked. She pushed the door open, hair wet from the snow. “Stefan?” she called out, looking around. “I know I’m early, but I didn’t really understand the texts, so I thought I’d come early. Is everything okay?”
Something very strange had happened when Stefan woke up that morning. He didn’t feel the bloodlust that was normally a constant struggle. He couldn’t vamp out. He figured out pretty quick that he was human. Instead of pondering why, he texted Bubbles, told Anna and Lexi, and decided to enjoy it. If Orange County was going to give him this gift, he intended on taking advantage. As much as he could, anyway.
Stefan was in the kitchen with a pint of ice cream when Bubbles came through the front door. “In here!” He called through a mouthful of Chunky Monkey. Everything felt different and much better. Food tasted better. Smells weren’t as strong, but were much sweeter. He couldn’t hear through the walls. It was pretty relaxing.
Bubbles walked into the kitchen and peeked in before she walked in the rest of the way. The ice cream in Stefan’s hands was definitely not expected. He almost never ate food unless he was trying to make her feel better about eating alone. Or if she got him a little cupcake and pouted until he ate it. So she knew that he ate food, but she knew it wasn’t a lot of food.
“Hey.” She smiled, but there was still a slight concern in her eyes. “You’re eating ice cream.” It was a very astute observation. No one could say she’d lied. “Are...the texts said something about human?” She stepped a little closer, putting her purse down on the counter and making her way over to peek into the ice cream tub. “You ate a lot of ice cream.”
Stefan grinned at her over the top of his ice cream container. She was beautiful--a little fuzzier than normal? Maybe. She definitely didn’t smell the same as she did when he was a vampire--and he was so incredibly happy that she was here. “I am.” He set the pint aside when she came closer and then quickly--human speed--wrapped his arms around her. “I’m human again. I don’t know how it happened, but…” Then he leaned in to kiss her. A human kiss. Warm and soft and strong. And she smelled and tasted normal. Wonderful. Beautiful.
Human. Stefan was human. Bubbles knew it technically didn’t matter to her...and he seemed so happy about it, but it was a little strange. Mostly because she wasn’t used to it. He moved at normal speeds and she could tell the difference when he wrapped his arms around her. It made her extra careful about how tight she wrapped her arms around his neck. “You’re not as blurry as you usually are.” She laughed at that. “But I don’t mind.” She smiled into the kiss. “Does that mean I’ll beat you at all of the usual strength tests,” she said once the kiss was over, the amusement obvious as she looked up at him. After a moment, she asked the next thing she could think of. “Do you think it’s going to last?” A beat. “Do you want it to?”
“I’m much slower.” He grinned. He couldn’t help but grin. This was all new and exciting. Stefan hadn’t felt this way in over a year. He felt free. No blood lust, no thirst, no worrying who he might hurt, or what might happen if he lost control. He could just be there with his girlfriend, like a regular person. His arms tightened around her and he pressed his nose into her hair. It was a familiar position, but felt entirely different and new in his new form. “I don’t know. I don’t know how it happened, or how long it’s going to last, but I want to take advantage.” He pulled back a little to look down at her. “What should we do? Besides eating and drinking all the things. I want to eat and drink all the things.” It all tasted different with a human tongue.
“Yes. But that's okay. I'm not super speedy yet.” She didn't know when that would happen, but she was prepared for when that happened. At least mentally. She let herself lean against him, taking joy in the feeling of his being close. She liked it when they had moments like these, moments when Stefan seemed so much lighter. “Well, we can do that. Whatever you want. Even if it is just eating and drinking everything.” She smiled a little. “We could go for a walk in the snow or dancing or really anything.” There wasn't enough snow for snow angels or snowball fights. You couldn't even build a snowman. “We could even combine ideas and dance in the snow.”
“Dance in the snow?” Stefan asked. One of his hands took hold of hers, and he lifted it to spin her out. They’d been dancing before, of course. Stefan truly knew how to wine and dine a beautiful woman. He’d shown her more than a few romantic evenings since they’d become official. He was an excellent dancer. “I could go for a dance in the snow,” he said, lifting his arm again to twirl her gently under it. “If that’s what you want to do. After we find some pie. Apple pie. With vanilla ice cream.”
Bubbles laughed as she spun. She liked dancing with Stefan, but then again, she liked almost anything that involved Stefan. “Yes! We don’t get too much snow, so it’s nice to take advantage of it when we get it! It’s been snowing pretty regularly, too.” She’d already gone on a lot of long walks that had resulted in coming home with pink cheeks and a red nose. “Pie? Is there pie here or do we have to go out and look for it? And you must really like ice cream.” Her voice was tinged with amusement when she said the last part. Stefan seemed so happy, a little less serious. It made her happy to see him happy. She moved back over to him, leaning up for another kiss.
“We have to go out and get pie.” Stefan glanced at the pint container, then gave a laugh. “I do. I really do like ice cream. The way it tastes when I’m human, anyway.” He lifted both hands up to cup her cheeks as he kissed her. What was it about Bubbles that made Stefan want her? All the time, he wanted her. He couldn’t get enough of her.
Finally, he tore himself back away from her so he could take her hands in his own. “Pie. And dancing. And drinks?” He wanted drinks, too. Not too many, though. He didn’t want to get drunk. He remembered hangovers and wasn’t enthused to experience that again.
Bubbles enjoyed kissing Stefan. She was convinced she took almost every opportunity to do so. She laughed a little as he pulled back and talked about pie again. “You must really like pie.” She laughed again before taking his hand. “Okay. Let’s go get pie and drinks and dance in the snow.” She paused for a moment, giving him a curious look. “So are you driving or am I?”
“Dean really likes pie. I feel like I don’t remember what pie tastes like with a human mouth.” He laced his fingers through hers. “You can drive, if you want to.” Stefan felt like leaving himself in her fully capable hands tonight. She had the best ideas for things, anyway. Dancing in the snow sounded absolutely perfect.
Bubbles smiled a little. “Yes. I think I remember that about him. Is it lazy to get him a pie for Christmas? Oh! Maybe we can get him something that sends him pie for a year or something. I don’t know if that exists. I can look!” Admittedly, she liked thinking of fun presents for people and so far all she knew about Dean was that he liked pie and cars and he had a baby on the way. “But we’ll remind you of what pie tastes like before the night is overrrr!” She made her way to the car, reversing the usual way that Stefan opened the door for her and opened it for him, looking at him expectantly before he climbed into the car. Then she walked around to her own side and climbed in. She had an idea of where to go for pie. Since it was the first time in a while, Bubbles was pretty sure she’d have to pick somewhere really good and she knew a really good diner that wasn’t too far.
“No, I think he’d love a pie for Christmas.” Stefan said, breaking into a grin. That actually sounded like the perfect present. Now that Stefan and Bubbles were a thing, officially, together and really solid, they could combine present giving and receiving. Stefan was thankful for that, actually, because Bubbles seemed like an excellent present-idea-comer-up-with-er. Stefan could absolutely fund all the presents if Bubbles came up with what they should get everyone.
Bubbles clapped her hands together. She was sure that she could figure out what sort of pies that Dean liked, but it was likely she could find something that he liked. She would also take well to the position on present-idea-comer-up-with-er. Mostly because she liked to figure out what to give people and to make them happy.
She drove to the diner that she had decided on. She’d been there before with her dad and sisters. It had GREAT pie. At least she thought so. “Are you ready for pie?”
Stefan turned to smile brightly at her. “I am absolutely ready for pie.” He reached for her hand and gave it a gentle squeeze. (Not that he had to worry about being gentle with her. She, on the other hand, still had to worry about him!) “I’m really happy right now. I just wanted you to know.”
Bubbles smiled brightly. “I’m really happy, too. I’m glad that you’re happy and that we’re together and everything is okay.” She leaned up to steal a quick kiss before dragging him into the diner.
