Sarah and Steve had gotten to know each other little by little thanks to their encounters at the hospital. It was almost a year since they’d met and Sarah still couldn’t help teasing him a little, he was one of the sweetest guys she knew and so unassuming despite also being one of the hottest she’d ever seen.
Spotting him in one of the corridors she gave a little wave, “Hey hot stuff, how are you doing?” she called out with a grin.
He still made time to volunteer at the hospital because he knew how important it was to the kids. Steve had just finished reading to them, and was about to head home when he heard Sarah's voice. Steve laughed, "I'm doing alright," he headed her way instead of the way he'd been going, "how are you doing?"
“I’m good thanks. Keeping busy and trying not to think about Christmas looming ever closer. How about you?” she asked him, knowing he was still visiting the kids and being impressed by his dedication. He was one of the good guys.
"Good, I'm glad to hear that." Steve let out a long breath, and nodded. Christmas was getting closer, and honestly, it'd felt like it'd snuck up on him. "It really does feel like it snuck up on us this year doesn't it?" He shook his head and then smiled, "Good, Peggy's all moved in now, and we're just making it one day at a time with her pregnancy." He was so excited to be a dad, and that was evident on his face as he spoke about the baby.
“It does. I’m completely unprepared” Sarah told him, though she didn’t seem too bothered by it. “Oh that’s wonderful. If I can help in any way just let me know. I mean I know I was last pregnant over 9 years ago but it’s not something you forget” she grinned.
"You and me both." Steve would start working on getting things together for the kids though. That was important to him, and he knew how important it was for them and their families. "Thank you." Steve replied with a nod, "Of course, I don't imagine that you would forget something like that." He chuckled softly, "We're good right now, but if I need any advice I'll be sure to ask."
Sarah had gotten the total amount of zero presents so far and needed to make a start, John and Kira would be the hardest ones. Fe, Cos and Jemma would hopefully be easier. “You know how to find me” she said, “I’m always available for assistance” She knew it could be a little scary sometimes but at least they were in a solid committed relationship. That would help a lot.
Steve smiled over at Sarah, thankful that he had a friend like her around. "I appreciate it." He truly did, and he figured that he would need all the help he could get once the little one got there. "I'm just excited for her to get here. Not too early, of course, but I'm ready...mostly." He laughed, the sound a little nervous showing the nerves that he felt in regards to becoming a father.
“You’re as ready as you’ll ever be I’m sure” Sarah smiled, “None of us are really ready but we do okay. Instinct and common sense go a long way” she told him, there was no secret handbook, just the odd tip sometimes and realising making mistakes wasn’t the end of the world.
Steve gave a small nod of his head, he was sure that there would be plenty of mistakes that he'd make in the future and he was just going to have to deal with that. "I hope so. I'm just," he let out a long breath and reached up to rub the back of his neck, "I just scared that I'll screw her up in some way. I guess that's a normal fear though huh?"
“It’s very normal. I still worry about that and I counsel kids for a living now” Sarah said, “But honestly I think you’ll do great. The moment you lay eyes on the baby you’ll fall instantly in love and that will guide you better than anything else. You’ll still have fears they won’t go away but they’ll be manageable” And he had a number of friends around to help which Sarah knew was invaluable support.
