It was so strange to think about meeting up with Veronica after being gone for so long. Rose really hoped that their friendship was something that would be able to continue without her ex in the picture. Sisters before misters, right? Rah-rah female empowerment. There was also the enjoyment of seeing someone from before and just getting to do something for herself that didn’t involve her new gig. No offense to Jill, but sometimes she needed something adult in her life than wandering a college campus and watching over someone.
Eyes glanced at her watch as she walked from her car over to the pizza place that Veronica had picked when they discussed meeting up. At least she wasn’t running behind as she made her way into the restaurant and went to the hostess stand to check in to see if Veronica had arrived before her.
Excited wasn’t an emotion Veronica experienced very often, and it definitely wasn’t one she ever showed. But the blonde was excited to see Rose again. It had been way too long. She wanted to know what Rose had been up to since she left, and why she decided to come back. Veronica wasn’t huge on gossip but she was curious what happened with Rose’s ex. The guy had been her friend too after all. But there was also a lot to catch up with in Veronica’s life.
The main thing was fairly evident as the blonde climbed out of her car. The baby bump was fairly evident on her petite body. She walked into the pizza place just as Rose was talking to the hostess. Perfect timing. “Well, if it wasn’t Rose Hathaway,” Veronica said a small smile as she walked up behind her friend.
Rose turned her head when she heard her name being called and a bright smile was on her face when she took in the sigh of Veronica Mars. “Veronica Mars, as I live and breathe,” she drawled in a fake Southern accent before her eyes fluttered downward and noticed that baby bump on her friend. When she spoke again all pretense of an accent was dropped, “Holy shit, you’re pregnant?!” Woah, what in the hell had happened while she was going? Veronica didn’t seem like the type to get pregnant anytime soon.
“Nah, I just had a really big breakfast,” Veronica joked. She did get why the reaction though. Veronica had never exactly expressed any interest in having a child. The hostess led them to their table. Once they were seated Veronica opened up a bit more. “So as you already noticed, Logan knocked me up. What’s new with you?”
“Well, that’s one hell of a breakfast, let me know the restaurant,” Rose quipped back with a smirk. It was so odd to see Veronica like that. It struck her a little bit that she might have been in the same shoes if she had stuck around with her engagement and marriage. But that wasn’t something to dwell on as they sat down at the table, “How far along are you? And what isn’t new? I got a job offer here that I couldn’t pass up, so here I am again.”
“Eighteen weeks.” It was going by way too fast. Before she knew it she’d be giving birth. Logan really needed to get to work on the nursery. But she didn’t want to dwell on her pregnancy. She was much more interested in what Rose had been up to.
Before she could say anything the waitress came by. Veronica ordered a ham and pineapple pizza and side of cheesy garlic sticks. Screw the eating healthy shit. She had cravings. Once she walked away she turned her attention back to Rose. “So what’s this new job?”
Veronica knew a little bit about what kind of work she did, so Rose decided to be honest without giving too much away. She trusted Veronica, but she wouldn’t say anything without Jill’s explicit blessing. “I’ve got a bodyguard job that brought me back. And eighteen weeks? That’s insane. I can’t believe you’re having a kid. It’s great and I’m sure you’ll be the type of Mom that I actually like.” Veronica Mars would never be your Stepford Wife soccer mom and Rose appreciated that.
“Impressive. Is it for anyone interesting?” She almost went with important, but most people who needed bodyguards were important. “Trust me. I can’t believe it either.” And Rose was right on that one, no way in hell was Veronica going to be a soccer mom. If her kid was into soccer, Logan could drive him or her around.
“It is, but I’m not allowed to say, sorry,” Rose always made sure to respect that part of the agreement and Jill wouldn’t be in danger. It wasn’t as if she was a bodyguard for a celebrity, but Jill being a princess was fairly impressive, “Well, I’m happy I came back then. If you need anything from me, let me know, except for babysitting. I might have to bow out on that until the kid is old enough to tell me their needs.” She gave a wink on that comment.
“It’s cool. I get it.” Of course Veronica was curious but she’d respect Rose’s job. “Gee thanks,” Veronica quipped sarcastically. Although she got it. She wouldn’t want to babysit sme newborn either.
“I could maybe be convinced. Anything else going on that I should know about? I know you’re probably dying to know what happened in my life,” Rose knew that Veronica most likely wanted to know what happened between her and her boyfriend. She had been invested in it through friendship, so Rose owed it to her to explain what happened.
Rose was right on that one. Veronica actually was dying to know what had happened. Curiosity always got the better of her. “If you’re up for talking about it, I wouldn’t be opposed to the dirty details.”
“We just kind of grew apart. I got sick of the MMA scene and decided to take up a bodyguarding opportunity, which in turn lead me to this one, but he wasn’t very happy about it. I really do like him still, but long distance isn’t something I want to deal with,” she would probably go back to him if they were able to run into each other again, but for now she was better off where she was, “Nothing horrible. No cheating or scandals, sorry.”
“Good for you,” Veronica said honestly. She always believed you had to do what was best for yourself. Not a guy. Her independence caused a few issues with Logan, but he knew who she was when they started dating. “Bummer about the scandals though. I was hoping for something more juicy,” she teased as the waitress brought their pizza over. Veronica immediately dug in.
“Haha, I’ll make sure my next relationship is way more juicy for you,” Rose gave her a wink as the waitress came over. Now was time to eat and Rose realized she was absolutely starving. Everything was going to be okay this time around the OC since she had Jill and Veronica to keep her sane.
