Veronica wasn’t the type to get nervous. But today she was. Telling her dad she was pregnant was a big deal. She just hoped he didn’t kill Logan. After all, she was twenty-nine now. It wasn’t like Logan had knocked her up in high school.
Now that Veronica was beginning to show, it was only a matter of time before her dad found out. He was quite the detective after all. Thanksgiving seemed like the best time to tell him. They would all be together already.
The blonde wasn’t much of a cook, but Thanksgiving wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without a turkey. She had gotten a pre-made turkey and was heating it up in the oven while the Logan and her father watched whatever game was one. “Dinner’s almost ready!” she called to the boys.
“We’ll eat here,” Keith yelled back to his daughter. No need to stop watching the game for some turkey if you asked him.
“Sorry dad, we’re having a proper Thanksgiving this year.” Besides she had some big news to tell him that she didn’t want to do while shoveling food in her mouth in front of a screen.
Logan was setting the table, and preparing sides. Secretly, he was also making sure the turkey was done. He knew Veronica very well, and he knew that she was likely to overcook or undercook the bird, or some other disaster would befall them this holiday. He was also seriously considering the removal of any sharp knives from the table. That might be a good idea later.
“Want a beer?” he asked Keith, taking one for the older man and one for himself. He wanted to catch a few minutes of the game while they had time. “I don’t know about you, but I’m starving.” He lowered his voice. “I also have some cookies on standby.” Lately, the two men had gotten along better. It was a change from the dreams, when they always seemed to disagree. He didn’t know how tonight would go, but they were off to a good start.
Keith was a little wary about his daughter’s cooking. But he also knew it was best to just let her go for it. Veronica was stubborn, there was no arguing with her once she set her mind to something. As for Logan, Keith was warming up to him. He had always assumed the guy was another stuck up, snob. Spoiled by his movie star father. However, it took a lot for a guy to not only keep up with Veronica, but stand up to her. Logan seemed to be doing both, as long as she was happy he’d be happy.
“Thanks,” Keith said accepting the beer. He popped off the cap and took a long sip. “We’re gonna need it if Veronica’s cooking.”
“You know I can hear you guys,” Veronica called as she pulled the turkey out of the oven. “And dinner is ready.”
“Don’t worry. I made sure the bird was dead, and won’t be screaming when we stick a fork in it.” It looked good, and it smelled good. That usually meant it would taste good. With Logan on sides, they were done, and seasoned well. Veronica and spices were not particularly friends, with either too much, or not enough. This dinner was going really well.
He knocked his bottle against Keith’s and went to the kitchen to help finish up and carve the turkey. “I think it’s going pretty well so far. Ready to drop the bomb?” he asked Veronica, well out of earshot of the man on the sofa. “He might actually want to be a grandpa.” Most old people liked babies, right? It could happen.
Veronica narrowed her eyes at her boyfriend. Sure her dad was getting older, but his hearing was still the same, not to mention Keith was a pretty sharp guy. He could tell something was up.
“What bomb?” Keith asked flat out.
Veronica plastered a smile on her face, unusual for the girl that usually scowled. “Dad,” she began. “I’m pregnant.”
Keith just stared at his daughter and in boyfriend in shock.
“Surprise,” Logan said after a minute of stunned silence. He held his hands up. At least he was out of arm’s reach. That would have been bad maybe.
He glanced at Veronica, then back to Keith. “We just found out, and it’s a really good thing.” Veronica wasn’t excited at first, and even Logan had been worried, but it had all worked out. They weren’t married, but they were living together, and he wasn’t planning on leaving her. Those were plusses. “We really want this baby.”
To Veronica’s surprise her father actually broke out into a smile. Well at least he was happy about the news. That was a relief.
“It’s about time,” Keith said. Not that he was all that thrilled with his baby girl getting pregnant out of wedlock, but she wasn’t getting any younger and he did want a grandkid. “Who’s your granddaddy?”
Logan exhaled and relaxed. The punch was not coming. The man didn’t hate him anymore. Maybe hate was too strong a word. Dislike was more like it - strong dislike. They were older now, and he was the father of the man’s grandchild.
“Are you kidding? Our baby will probably like you more than they like us. We fully expect you to spoil them.” Sweet relief. Logan held out his hand for the other man’s to shake. “Thanks. It means a lot, really.” He’d take a moment to be serious, then they could get back to the game while Veronica put the finishing touches on dinner.
