Celaena loved Baxters, morseso because her best friend was now successfully running one branch of it. Heading up to the counter, Celaena stopped in the queue, digging her purse out of her handbag and leaning over to have a look at what pastries were available. “Sorry,” she said, smiling at the girl next to her in the queue. “I just love their pastries so much!”
Belle was the same way. She was pretty much addicted to the sugar cookies that Baxter Bakery had. They changed up every few weeks depending on the holiday or the season, and right now they were maple leaves and pumpkins. Pretty amazing for this time of year! Belle was treating herself because she’d done some extra work and gotten some overtime hours at the shop, and well, she deserved it. So she was going to get a sparkling latte with vanilla, and two sugar cookies.
She grinned softly at the girl who’d bumped her elbow. “It’s okay! I just wish the line would move faster.”
“I know, right! They get so busy in here these days!” Celaena stood on her toes and looked to the see what was happening at the front of the queue. Pouting, she dropped down again and looked at the woman she had bumped into. “I’m Celaena by the way, nice to meet a fellow Baxter’s addict,” she joked, holding out her hand in greeting.
“I seriously thought things wouldn’t be as crowded after they opened the second location,” Belle said, cocking her head to the side. “But it seems like the word’s out now, and everyone’s even more into this place.” She reached forward and shook the other woman’s hand. “Ti--Belle. It’s Belle.” She said, then withdrew her hand. “Nice to meet you, Celaena.”
“You too Belle,” Celaena smiled, amused by the little amendment. “You uh...you went to say something else just then, is Belle short for something?” she asked with a grin.
Belle cleared her throat. “No no, I just… I have this nickname from when I was a kid, and I’m trying to avoid it, but… well, it’s sort of come back full force because I’ve been having these weird Dreams, and in my Dreams my name is my nickname from when I was a kid.” Her nose crinkled as she realized how ridiculous that must have sounded. “Now I sound like a lunatic. Sorry.”
Celaena laughed at that and shook her head. “No, I get it, sort of. I’ve got a couple of different names in my Dreams too,” she shrugged. “What happens in your Dreams then? We all seem to have them around here, I’ve always wondered if they’ve been spiking the water supply,” she joked.
“I’m a fairy, if you believe it,” Belle looked a little embarrassed just talking about it. Her face was going red. And when Belle blushed, she went RED. Not just slightly pink or splotchy. Hopefully it would fade soon. “About six inches tall, and I Tinker. I make things out of acorns and twigs and stuff, and the other fairies use my inventions to change the seasons in the mainland.”
“O, so you sound like a much cuter fairy than me,” Celaena joked, bumping shoulders with Belle. “It’s a cute name too,” she grinned. “So you’re 6 inches tall?” she asked, gesturing with her fingers approximately 6 inches. “That must make getting things done awkward.”
Tink… Belle… Laughed. “I guess I am? I dunno. There are some fairies that are a whole lot cuter than I am. You should meet my friend Rosetta.” She beamed a little at that. “Silvermist is pretty adorable, too. I love my fairy friends so much!” She missed them in her waking life. How strange was that? To miss someone she’d never met? “It does take a little getting used to. Being so small… it’s quite a change.”
Celaena laughed as she listened to Belle, they seemed to share the same kind of exuberant energy. “You definitely are, I’m the kind of faerie that kicks ass and spews fire so...much cuter,” she joked. “What do you want? My treat,” she offered as they came up to order.
Belle laughed. “Really? Spew fire? I don’t think there’s anyone in Pixie Hollow who can do that.” She shook her head, trying to imagine which of her friends might do such a thing. Iridessa? “Oh, you don’t have to do that! That’s so kind of you, really. Um… I’ll have a vanilla scone and a caramel latte.”
“It’s what someone from my Dreams called me once,” Celaena shrugged casually. “Don’t worry, I’ve yet to develop that sort of power here,” she joked and relayed their order to the girl behind the counter and paid before Belle could get her money out. “Don’t worry about it, call it a nice to meet you present,” she grinned brightly. Celaena did enjoy meeting people.
