Caroline was going all out for Christmas this year. It was their first year living together after all, and really Caroline went all out. It was her favorite holiday after all. They had the two trees they had bought together up already. The large one in the family room and the little in their bedroom. They should probably get another little one for the spare room, but Caroline would save that battle for later. Or better yet just set it up when Peeta wasn’t home. For not she wanted to focus on the lights.
“Sometimes I wish we had a house,” she admitted, stringing some lights around a window. “Then we could decorate like the houses we saw the other night.” As in the night of their engagement. Just thinking about it brought a smile to Caroline’s face and she held up her hand to admire her ring for the ten millionth time since Peeta had proposed.
Two trees was a bit of an extreme in Peeta’s mind, but he was more than happy to let Caroline do whatever made her happy except for maybe the third tree. He knew better than to argue when it came to her decorating and besides, she was riding a bit of a happiness high now since the engagement. They were having a party soon anyway, so this would all be done and ready for that, which would save them a lot of trouble later.
When she commented about the house he stepped out of the kitchen with a mixing bowl in his arms and was stirring. He caught her staring at her ring and he couldn’t help but let out a laugh, “Oh Caroline. We can get a house soon if you want. We’ll probably want to move out of here once we’re married. Are you sure you want to add that much decorating to your list? We’ll have the outside as well as the inside to do up.” It would be a lot of work, but if she was willing to do some of it then Peeta would help out.
“Yes. That’s like the best part of Christmas.” Okay maybe the best was a bit of an exaggeration but it was still up there. In fact she was going to help her mom decorate her house as well. But for now she was still finishing up the apartment.
She stopped admiring her ring and went back to hanging the lights. “So I have a question,” Caroline commented. It was something that had bothered her a little bit. Just the timing of everything, not that she wasn’t thrilled with being engaged. “Why did you propose now?” Part of her did wonder if it was just because his friend was getting married.
“Are you sure about that one? You don’t like the pretty lights or the lovely presents?” Peeta countered with a laugh. It was a lot of hard work to do all the decorating and it was a little more fun to enjoy it after it was all done. Peeta just really hated doing all the work.
“I’d been thinking about it for a while and I knew you wouldn’t want it to happen during the holidays,” Peeta was at least observant when it came to that. He walked closer to her and set down the mixing bowl on a side table, “so, it was on my mind. I had the ring and it was burning a hole in my pocket.” It wasn’t so much about Gale getting married - it might have pushed him a little but he wanted to propose to her since Thanksgiving.
“I like those too,” because duh. Who didn’t like presents? “But decorating is so fun. Getting into the Christmas spirit, turning our apartment into our own winter wonderland.” The decorations made the holiday if you asked Caroline. “Besides, you already got me the best Christmas present.” As in her ring.
“Oh really?” Caroline asked turning to face her fiance. The lights could wait, for a minute. “And just how long did you have the ring for?” She was definitely curious now.
“Yeah, but you have to put it all away later. That totally takes the fun out of it. Minimal decorating means easier clean up,” Peeta pointed out with a laugh as he leaned over to kiss her cheek, “Glad you like to ring. And you don’t get to know how long I’ve had the ring for. There’s got to be a bit of mystery to this relationship.” She didn’t need to know about asking Wash for ideas or running scenarios through his head for a week or two. It wasn’t important in the end because it had all come together.
“But see, the thing about dating - or marrying,” since they were engaged now, “a vampire means she can clean up super fast.” Hell she could decorate fast too but it was more fun to take it slow and enjoy putting everything up with Peeta. “What?!” Caroline pouted at his response. “That’s so not fair!”
“I guess that’s a good point? You really don’t remember what it used to be like to be normal, do you?” sometimes Peeta wondered if Caroline sometimes forgot what it was like to just be a normal human and not have her vampire powers. She would probably be completely lost if she had to do things like a normal person for once, “And life isn’t fair, but I need to keep some things a secret from you. It’s not very romantic.”
Caroline frowned at his question. It wasn’t so much that she forgot. She was just used to living her life this way now. If she had to survive on blood she might as well use all the abilities that came with it. Compulsion was the only tricky one. She never wanted to go too far with it, but discounts and even changing her grades weren’t the worst things in the world.
“I don’t know,” she finally said. “It’s all just part of who I am now.” She did prefer who she was now to the girl she once was. The only time she ever wished she was human again was when it came to Peeta. The thought of losing him one day, even if it was decades from now, killed her.
“The proposal was romantic enough. There’s no need for secret keeping,” she teased. “Have you thought about when you want to get married?” While they were on the proposal subject and all.
“Yeah, it’s been quite a while,” it was almost like Peeta trying to remember what it was like to have two functional legs. It got a little more fuzzy as time went on and he accepted his new normal. It was a little more important thought to remember what it was like to be human. And maybe some day Peeta would want to join her in the vampire side of life, but that wouldn’t be a for a while, “And it hasn’t been that long. I figured you’d probably want to do it sometime after you finish up school. That’s about as far as I’ve thought about it.”
“Over two years.” It was still hard for Caroline to believe. It seemed like just yesterday she had woken up and bitten one of her friends. Then again it was hard for her to remember a time where she didn’t have her abilities.
“That’s what I was thinking too!” Caroline beamed. At least they were on the same page when it came to that. “Like August. Gives me a few months to just focus on our wedding.” Without classes and finals getting in the way.
“August sounds like a fine time to me. I think that we’ll be able to get pretty much everything done in the near future. I bet a lot of people are getting engaged around this time, so it might be good to start looking into things. Indoor or outdoor?” Peeta could honestly say that he had no idea about much aside from the cake when it came to weddings, but he knew the venue was going to be highly important to Caroline. He would let her do most of the planning if she wanted to, but he would be available for opinions.
Silly Peeta, of course Caroline had already started looking into things. And there would be a whole lot more once finals were done and the engagement party was over with. That was her main focus at the moment. “Outdoor ceremony, indoor reception,” Caroline replied without skipping a beat. August in Orange County was hot. There was no way she’d make her guests be out in the heat for longer than the twenty or so minutes it took for the ceremony. Thinking of the ceremony… “We are writing our own vows.”
“Do you have a secret Pinterest board that I didn’t know about?” Peeta asked her a bit surprised as her quick reply. Apparently she had done a lot of thinking about it, “And do we really have to do that? I’m awful at writing things.” He could do it if he absolutely had to, but he would be much more happier if they could just go by the book. But he knew it would be next to impossible to say no to Caroline when it came to this stuff.
“Not yet,” but she was going to get right on it. Of course she had thought about her own wedding though. Especially now that she was pretty sure that would be her career after graduation. “We really have to,” Caroline told him but gave him a kiss to make it go over smoother. Not only was writing their own vows more romantic. There was also the fact that Caroline didn’t exactly want to be reminded of death or sickness on her wedding day. Especially since it only really applied to Peeta.
A mock annoyed sigh escaped his lips when she announced she was going to start a Pinterest account. That would be dangerous in Caroline’s hands and he could only imagine what kind of crazy wedding they would end up having. Being told that they really had to write vows made him frown before turning his kiss, “Can’t we just go online and find something if you don’t want the same cut and dry stuff? We don’t have to follow a script and I’m sure someone online has some nice alternative vows that we don’t have to write ourselves.”
Peeta was definitely going to have his hands full once Caroline started planning. But hey, he knew what he was getting himself into. “Nope. I want it to come from your heart.” Yeah cheesy but whatever. It was what she wanted. “There’s still plenty of time before August. You’ll be able to do it. I have faith.”
“You’re expecting a lot, woman,” Peeta teased her, tongue sticking out at her playfully, before turning back around to take his cake batter into the kitchen. He really did love her and he would do what she wanted to make the big day perfect, but he might fight her a bit on this aspect of it. They did have a lot of time before this happened, so he could work on her. “Love you,” he added as an afterthought with a chuckle as he moved to go get his baking finished.
Caroline didn’t think writing their own vows was expecting a lot. But if Peeta just automatically went along with everything Caroline said that would be boring. She didn’t mind the challenge, but this one she was going to win. “You too,” Caroline replied shaking her head with a laugh. This was not the end of the discussion but there were more pressing things to attend to at the moment, like decorating for Christmas!
