Derek had been in a fairly good mood since Thanksgiving. It was good to get home to Sparks. See his dad and his brother. It was certainly needed with all the stress Orange County brought him lately. Now that he was back he was looking forward to catching up with Chloe. Things had been a bit tense after the whole summoning a zombie issue. He was ready to let that go, try and accept that he would never be able to change her need to run into dangerous situations. As much as he wanted to protect her.
Despite his rare good mood he was feeling a little off, slightly under the weather. He wasn’t going to let that ruin his plans though, so he arrived at Chloe’s apartment knocking on the door and forcing a smile onto his face.
Thanksgiving had been quite an adventure since she and Henry had decided to spend time with her parents and then she was going to be meeting his father. It had all gone well, but she had to admit that she was a little glad to be back home and not worrying about family obligations at the moment. But at least Derek was trying to be better to her since the zombie incident She was surprised that he had wanted to get together, but she wanted to clear the air between the two of them.
When the knock came to her door she went over to answer and smiled at Derek. “Hey, come on on,” she stepped back so he could come into the apartment and closed it behind him, “how are you?” She noticed that he looked a peakish, but she didn’t want him to get grumpy that she was noticing that. Craven came wandering into the room and stood off to the side as he studied the new person in the apartment.
“Thanks,” Derek said stepping inside. His eyes briefly wandered to the cat, that was of course staring at him. He still wasn’t too comfortable around that thing, but there wasn’t much he could do about it at the moment. “I’m fine.” Like he would admit to feeling under the weather. “How are you?” Despite his gruffness he did have manners. “Have a good Thanksgiving?”
“It was decent. I was stuffed and did a bit of Black Friday shopping with my mom,” yes Chloe was one of those people. She didn’t mind going when it was middle of the night and then the crazy lines from earlier was gone. Doorbusters weren’t really a thing that she did, so it didn’t bother to come after people went crazy. Craven moved closer into the room and sniffed the air, “What about you? You saw your family right? Did you want anything to drink?”
“Why would you want to put up with all those people?” Black Friday was just a bad idea if you asked Derek. People got hurt. And if he got involved more people would probably get hurt. Although, he did catch some deals online. He was just a starving student after all.
“Yeah. It was good to see my dad, and Simon.” It was a little weird for him, that Chloe was practically in love with his brother in the dreams but had never met him in real life. Especially since he knew them both. But it was probably weird for Chloe as well. “Yeah, water would be good,” he paused contemplating if he should ask for something else. “Or maybe ginger ale?” he decided to just go for it, he was feeling a little nauseous.
“We didn’t go when the stores open, which is the better way to do it. We went out at like midnight and the crowds were fairly light,” she explained to him with a smile. It really wasn’t that horrible, but she understood why people didn’t go out on Black Friday. It got insane really easily.
It was so strange to know so much about Simon in her Dreams, but not know anything about him here. She would want to meet him at some point, but it would be a little odd at first. At least she could use Derek is her friend as an excuse. “I want to meet them some day. Is Simon a lot like he is in the Dreams? And I’ve got some ginger ale,” Chloe made her way to the kitchen and grabbed him a glass of ginger ale. As she brought it over to him she held it out to him with a concerned look, “Are you feeling okay?”
“Midnight is still early,” Derek pointed out bluntly. But then softened a bit when Chloe got him a ginger ale. “Thanks,” he half smiled accepting the glass from her. “I’m fine,” he insisted again taking a sip. Unfortunately it only made his stomach feel worse and he was beginning to break out into a sweat.
“You don’t look fine,” if Derek was going to be blunt with her then she was going to be blunt with her. He was sweating and she reached out to touch his forehead and noticed that he was running incredibly warm. The symptoms finally clicked in her brain as she gave him a concerned look, “Are you -- are you changing?”
The moment Chloe said it, Derek realized that was in fact what was about to happen. Without a word he handed her back the glass and quickly ran out of the apartment, practically flying down the stairs until he got outside. He ran to the first patch of dirt he found kneeling down in it. He needed to be close to the earth.
Yep, she was completely right. Her eyebrows raised to the sky as Derek suddenly handed off the glass and bolted. Chloe was stunned for a beat and then grabbed her house keys after setting the glass down on a table. She ran after him, locking up her apartment, and went over to him on the grass. “Deep breaths, Derek,” she reached out to touch him once she knelt down beside him. They could do this together if it was truly happening this time.
“You need to go,” Derek growled between heavy breaths. This wasn’t safe. She could get hurt. However before he could protest again his skin rippled, back shooting up into the air. His arms and legs were rigid, hair sprouting out. A cry escaped him at the pain his body was causing him.
“I’m not leaving,” Chloe said firmly as she stayed by his side. She had no idea what else she could do for him, but she knew better than to leave him. If he still has his own mind in his werewolf form then she would be the only one nearby that could talk to him. When the cry escaped she winced and felt awful that she couldn’t do anything, but she reached out to try and rub his back and soothe a little.
Before Derek could protest his body convulsed again. Back arching in a manner that wasn’t normal for a human being, but was more wolf like. His shirt ripped off falling to the ground, hair sprouting all over his back. His stomach twisted causing him to vomit over and over again.
If her dreams were any indication this could take a long time. She did her best to help move him out of the way so that no one would stumble upon them. Her phone stayed with her as she did her best to watch him and help when she could, but for the most part all she could do was watch him. It was awful not being able to help and knowing he was going through all that pain.
His body contorted and contracted for a few more hours. Hair sprouting, vomit spewing on the ground in front of him, sweat pouring down his face and back. Finally his bones cracked causing another cry of pain. The hair turned to fur and his face began to transform, nose turning into a snout. His eyes were filled with terror, his cry of pain turning into a howl. Then just like that it was over, his body heaved again, the fur receded, face returning to normal. He couldn’t talk just yet, all he could do was breathe heavily in between dry heaves.
It was scary to watch. It was insane that his body could go through these changes and it went back to being normal so quickly. When his face changed her eyes widened in fear and she hoped that nothing bad would happen and he would attack her. That howl tugged at her heart and then suddenly it was all reversing. It was yet another partial change and she felt bad that he hadn’t completed it. At least a completed change would give him some kind of relief. When he seemed back completely to his human self she approached him.
Once Derek could finally talk again, he wasn’t exactly sure what to say. His protectiveness took over. “You didn’t have any visions of ghosts did you?” he basically snapped at her. Although it was really just concern, he didn’t want her to go through what she had in the dreams.
“The hell?” Chloe’s expression was one of shocked confusion. Why in the world was he asking that? “No? Was I supposed to?” There wasn’t a situation where she was going to run across murder scenes outside by her apartment. She was far more concerned with him being okay at this point.
“No,” Derek snapped. But then softened a bit. Chloe had just stayed with him while he was going through an agonizing half transition. “You did in the dreams,” he added as if that explained it all. Which it did to Derek. He didn’t want her to have to deal with a violent reenactment of a death on top of it all.
“No one was murdered here, so we’re fine,” Chloe commented with a confused look, “Do you want to go back to my place and rest? I feel like you’re probably exhausted after all that. My roomie is out for the weekend. You don’t have to stay long, but I want to make sure that you’re okay before you leave.”
“Yeah,” Derek admitted a bit defeated. He was exhausted and fighting with Chloe was honestly the last thing he wanted to do right now. “Thanks,” he added slowly standing up when he noticed his shirt was missing. “You wouldn’t happen to have any shirts big enough for me?” He was slightly embarrassed with the amount of skin showing. Not that he was fat or anything, in fact Derek had a pretty decent body, but he never showed it off, often trying to hide it.
“I think I do,” Chloe happened to notice how Derek looked without his shirt and her cheeks couldn’t help but blush. There were a few bigger shirts in the back of her closet that she got free from various things on campus, so she should be able to find something for Derek to wear, “Alright, let’s get you upstairs and resting. I’ll grab you some gatorade as well.”
“Thanks,” Derek said again following back into her apartment. Even though she could be an idiot and put herself in dangerous situations sometimes, Derek was lucky to have Chloe in his life.
