I ain’t actually supposed to see her
Who: Harley and Helena, also featuring the kiddos What: Harley's wish came true and her daughter Lucy is visiting when: 12/15 status: complete Rating: PG
Harley actually had a few wishes to choose from when she’d seen the falling stars, but the one that was most important to her would be to see her daughter Lucy again. The last time she’d seen her had been when the girl was a year old, and that had been almost a decade ago. She’d sent presents and the occasional phone call, but that was all Lucy’s foster parents would allow. Harley would have to remain that strange aunt that occasionally sent really cool stuff.
Wishes didn’t come true, and she forgot about it.
Then the doorbell rang.
Helena hadn’t made any wish for she already had what she wanted, and she wasn’t so certain they would come true if she wished something for Harley. So as it was, she simply went on with things and didn’t think much about the meteor shower. She was in the living room reading when the doorbell rang. She wasn’t sure who it was, but she was expecting perhaps one of Christina’s friends.
Marking her place in her book, she set it on the coffee table as she got up and answered the door. “Hello?
A young girl, maybe Christina’s age, stood on the doorstep. Blonde and in pigtails, she looked up at Helena with big brown eyes. There was a Wonder Woman backpack on her back, and she was entirely alone. “Hi!”
Except for the color of her eyes, she looked almost exactly like a mini-Harley. “I’m looking for my mom.”
It was surreal, standing there looking at the young girl, and seeing a near copy of her wife. Of course, that was how she and Christina were, but that was besides the point. The point was that even without the girl saying, she knew this was Harley’s daughter. Oh boy, there would be lots of emotions happening here.
“Of course, do come in,” Helena said with a smile, managing to not stare. She was polite and minded her manners there at least. “Harley! There is a visitor here to see you, and you may want to brace yourself.” Helena called and didn’t want to ruin the surprise of it being Lucy, so she just gave the vague warning. One that Harley may not heed, but it was given anyways.
Well, if it was Mistah J, Harley figured Helena would have given a different warning. Still, she poked her head from around the corner and…
Okay she stared, jaw hanging open, just before her head disappeared back into cover. Her chest was suddenly tight and it was hard to breathe. But she could do this. This was way better than the Joker and also a good thing. She hoped.
Smoothing her hair down, she came out more calmly, and then stared at the munchkin. “Uh. Hey?”
Lucy glomped onto Harley’s waist in a way very reminiscent of her mother, and Harley hugged her arms around her and tried very hard not to cry. “Does your mama know you’re here?”
Lucy eyedarted, then said. “Yeah, she does!”
If it had been the Joker, Helena would’ve attacked him on the spot and rendered him unconscious. After all, it was only fair to have some fun in killing him, and she knew Harley would most likely want to have words with him. But Helena hoped that this was a nice surprise.
And she couldn’t help but to smile as Lucy hugged Harley like that. And she also picked out the eye dart from a mile away.
“Are you certain of that?” Helena wasn’t going to tell, obviously, but she knew when people were lying.
“Positive.” Lucy nodded her head, then looked up at Harley. “I’ve come for the holidays!” Which holiday wasn’t certain but Harley had made sure Lucy got adopted into a Jewish family.
“This is gonna be the best christmaskah ever,” Harley whispered, tears flowing freely this time.
Helena had to shake her head and grin a bit. She then went and retrieved some kleenex and handed it to Harley before she turned back to Lucy. “My name is Helena, it’s a pleasure to meet you.” She smiled warmly.
“Mummy, what’s going on?” Christina’s voice came before she popped out of the living room. She spotted the other girl, looking at her, then looking at Harley. It was obvious this girl must either be Harley’s daughter or a close relative of her. Christina had inherited her mother’s powers of deduction.
Harley gestured at them, letting go of Lucy but keeping a hand on her shoulder. “Lucy, Helena is my wife, so she’s kinda like an extra mom. And this is her daughter Christina, so that makes you sisters!”
Lucy had always wanted a sister, so she beamed at Christina. “Hi!”
Christina also beamed. She’d always wanted a sibling as. “Hi!” Christina replied as she fully joined the group.
“Are you hungry at all, Lucy? Or thirsty?” Helena asked. She would let Harley decide about what to do, but she could at least get something to eat or drink if Lucy wanted. It would also give Harley and Lucy a little time to themselves.
“I’m starving.” Lucy spoke with all the drama and energy that any 11 year old child of Harley Quinn could possess.
Picking up on Helena’s thoughts, Harley suggested. “Why dontcha go get us some take out an’ let me and Lucy catch up?”
Helena nodded to Harley. “Of course. I’ll take Christina with me.” She was certain to get Harley and Lucy’s orders before grabbing her purse and heading off with Christina in order to give Harley and Lucy some time together. For maximum time, Helena wouldn’t order until she got to the place.
Harley sat Lucy down. She was a little nervous at first, but Lucy was friendly and more innocent than any child of Harley’s had a right to be. It was something that Harley was determined to preserve. She introduced her to the babies of course, both of whom seemed to instantly fall in love - and fall asleep on her too.
“Traveling all this way by yourself is a really brave thing to do, kiddo.”
“I wanted to see you.” Lucy replied, her fingers rubbing through the hyena’s fur. She thought they were dangerous animals, but they seemed really sweet.
They could be vicious, but Harley wasn’t exactly the person to ask when it came to them.
“I’m so happy.” Harley squeezed her hands in front of her chest and hoped that Lucy wouldn’t ask anything like ‘why did you give me up’.
Helena knew this visit from Lucy wouldn’t last forever, but she hoped that it would be a good one. It would be something that Harley could hold on to. She well knew that her wife longed to spend time with her daughter, so this seemed like it was a very good Christmas wish come true for her.
Christina bombarded her with some questions, such as if Lucy would be there for Christmas or not. Helena couldn’t answer some of them, but she figured if Lucy was going to be here for an extended period of time that some presents would be in order. Though that could be taken of tomorrow.
After the food was ordered, she and Christina waited for it. Helena had her phone close by in case Harley needed to call her for any reason while she was gone. But eventually the food was ready and she began to head back home.
Luckily, none of Lucy’s remaining questions were awkward. Harley gave the SFW version of how she and Helena had met, and told her that her heart was big enough for all three of them and more. And there was hugging, a whole lot of hugging.
“Where’s my dad?”
“He’s not here. And he’s a very bad man,” Harley told her. “He hurt me, and he’d have hurt you if he knew you existed.”
Helena took a longer way home to give Harley and Lucy more time, but also not long enough that the food would be cold upon arrival. But finally, she and Christina returned home and she came in the door.
“Knock knock, dinner is here!” Helena announced as Christina rushed past her to start to help getting utensils and such out for dinner. Helena set the food on the counter in the kitchen, then grabbed four plates out. She would wait until Harley and Lucy either came in here or gave the all-clear for them to go into the living room.
Once the food was set up, Harley and Lucy came in to get some plates so they could eat. “Took you long enough, we’re starving.”
“Starving,” Lucy repeated, beaming. She felt happy, and surrounded by a family she didn’t even know she’d had. Christina was of particular interest. She’d always wanted a sister, so she sat next to her.
Helena chuckled a bit. “Traffic wasn’t the best.” Blame it on the traffic, which may or may not have been the truth. After all, there was snow out there, and people here tended to not know how to drive in snow. “I hope that the food is to your satisfaction.”
Christina grinned, sitting next to Lucy. This was exciting to have a sister, even if she didn’t know how long she’d be able to see her. But maybe they could write to each other! Pen pals and such!
Lucy was all for penpals. And also all for the food, though she seemed to be a lot more polite and waited for others to dig in before she started to eat. “It’s very good, thank you.”
Harley looked proud. Lucy had a good family. She glanced at Helena, eyes watering.
“You are most welcome, Lucy,” Helena replied with a smile as she ate some of her own food. She caught Harley’s glance, giving her a smile and she reached over and squeezed her hand.
“What kind of games do you like to play?” Christina asked, suddenly all abuzz with ideas of games they could play after dinner.
Lucy wasn’t sure if Christina was talking about video games, or board games, but she was happy with either. “I really like the video games I’m not supposed to play. And every Friday we play cards and monopoly and stuff.”
Harley’s grin only got prouder.
“What kind of video games? I haven’t played all that many.” Save for the ones Harley may or may not have shown to Christina, of course.
Helena wasn’t opposed to video games, she’d just never been into them and Christina hadn’t professed interest, so she’d never gotten a gaming console before. Better late than never?
Lucy darted her eyes. “I’ll show you after we eat! And you can show me what kind of stuff you like to do. Like a trade!”
Maybe they could get into her mom’s make-up. That might be fun.
Harley probably should have wiped her face clean before Lucy had seen it, but it was a little too late for that.
“Deal!” Christina announced with a grin. She liked the sound of that, trading off things they both liked to do. Maybe they could even find some common likes!
Helena had to grin a bit at seeing the two girls getting along. It also put some thoughts into her head, but those wouldn’t be voiced just yet. There were other things for Harley to think about currently. After Lucy left, then she might bring it up at the proper time. Unless Harley brought it up first.
“Why doncha two go have some fun for a bit. Mom an’ I gotta talk about some stuff anyway. Then we can… go out.” Harley rubbed the back of her neck. “It’s not too late to have some family fun. There’s this mini-golf and arcade place I’ve been saving for a special occasion!”
“Okay!” Lucy grabbed her new sister’s hand and pulled her out of the kitchen. Harley sagged in her seat, then let out a nervous laugh.
With the two girls out of earshot, Helena drew in a breath and ran a hand through her hair before she turned to Harley, reaching out and setting a hand on her shoulder. “Are you alright, love?” Helena was rather certain that Harley had a lot of emotions going on inside her currently.
Harley laughed. A crazy sort of laugh. She got up and hugged Helena. “I ain’t actually supposed to see her, I don’t know what to think. I’m worried her father will find out about her. But...she’s here an’ she’s beautiful and…”
She didn’t know if she’d be able to let go.
She hugged Harley back tightly, rubbing her back gently. “If he does, he won’t make it past us, that I promise you. Even though you aren’t supposed to see her, soak up every moment of this, and hold it dear to you. Enjoy the time with Lucy.” Perhaps Helena was speaking more as her dream self. What the Helena of her dreams wouldn’t give for one more minute with Christina. She definitely wanted Harley to get everything out of this experience that she could.
“I will, I’m gonna.” Harley wiped at her eyes. She’d seen pictures, of course, but seeing her up close, talking to her, hearing her voice..
It was a holiday miracle, no matter what one believed. “I hope she can stay through Chanukah.”
It certainly was a holiday miracle, Helena would definitely agree with that. She smiled warmly at Harley. “I hope so, too. But for however long she may be here, it will be spent making nice memories for all of us to have. And perhaps we could get some pictures taken, of all of us together, and some of you and Lucy together?” She suggested. That way, Harley could have a photograph of this time as well.
“All the pictures,” Harley whispered. “All the pictures.” Her luck had been good lately but she knew Lucy couldn’t stay. But if she had memories to cherish, maybe it wouldn’t hurt so bad when that happened.
“We will take all the pictures.” Helena assured. She knew that memories and pictures weren’t as good as having Lucy there the entire time. But at least she did have this time with her. It was something more than she’d had. And regardless of what happened once Lucy left, Helena would be there for Harley.
