Li was at least feeling better after the whole thing with her parents. She hadn’t tried contacting them nor had they contacted her. A couple aunts had called, wondering if there was a pregnancy or some other illicit happening going on. After saying she had a girlfriend, that pretty much ended the conversation. There was a little part of her that thought if she hadn’t wanted to deal with her family, she should’ve come out years ago.
But it was what it was. She couldn’t do anything more about it, so she was choosing to move on with her life. After the initial depression and not knowing what to do, she was back on her feet and back to herself. Of course, receiving a couple messages of support from a couple of her cousins had helped. At least not all of her family were assholes.
Also having Ahsoka and Yang around helped immensely. She wasn’t completely over it, but she was worlds better now. She’d even composed a song for Ahsoka, completely in secret because she wanted it to be a surprise. It had been harder to keep a secret with Ahsoka moving in, but she’d managed it. She did most of the composing while at school, or when Ahsoka wasn’t there.
Finally, she’d deemed it ready to debut for Ahsoka, so she sat in the living room and was tuning both her normal and electric violins, an attempt to subtly attract Ahsoka’s attention.
Ahsoka had done what she could to help Li through it all. It upset her on some deep level that Li’s family would react like this. It made her wonder how the Jedi would have really reacted to her and Barriss - or her and Kaeden. Not that dream her was entertaining any ideas about Kaeden but from the safety of being awake Ahsoka could tell Kaeden was into her.
She opened her eyes from her meditation, and tilted her head. While she didn’t actually hear like a human anymore, she could hear through her montrals. They were hollow, and allowed her to hear better than most humans could. So she could hear parts of music no one else could. She had an appreciation for Li’s playing that only she could hear.
Ahsoka came out of the bedroom, and peered into the living room. “Practicing?”
Even with the bad feelings, Li’s life was now her own. There would be no micromanaging done by her parents, no one telling her what she could or could not do. She was more than relieved about that fact. It was scary to think about, but it was also exhilarating.
When Ahsoka came out, she smiled up at her, drawing her bow across all the strings of her electric violin, listening to the notes. Thankfully, she had perfect pitch and was pleased to hear it was in tune.
“Sort of. I have a new song I wanted to play for you, if you have some time?”
“Of course!” The music sounded great already, but then Li could play anything and Ahsoka would enjoy it. She took a seat across from her girlfriend, not suspecting it was anything specific for her. “I always like a good original work.”
Li smiled warmly. She set the electric violin down and picked up her normal one. “I hope you like this one.” She then started playing a song. It had a warm feeling to it, a melody that was inviting and happy. It was one that grew to swell with more emotion than one would think a simple melody could create, but the key she’d chosen for the song helped to invoke more emotion like that.
In the middle, she paused only long enough to switch to her electric violin. The song itself also began to change. It still had the warm, inviting tone, but also now took on some manner of an almost tribal sounding melody. Li had gone with a more tribal, primal type of tune as the song had progressed because that’s one of the things she thought of when she thought of Ahsoka.
The song went on for about seven minutes or so before Li held the final note, then let it fade into silence. She then lowered her violin, awaiting Ahsoka’s response. She was a little breathless from having played the song. Li had been moving around a bit while playing, not quite dancing the way Lindsey Stirling did, but she still moved with the music.
"I'm sure I will," Ahsoka promised, pulling her legs up and crossing them underneath her. She leaned her elbows on her knees as Li started to play. The music filled her with warmth and light. Her chest ached as the vibrations from the violin resonated through her montrals. But it was the second part of the song that really got to her.
It made the Force thrum, it brought her to space and beyond and she felt like she was standing atop a tall plateau, with the horizon stretching far in the distance and the stars twinkling above her like a sea of light. It was a song of light and life, primal in nature. The last note faded away and Ahsoka made a sound halfway between a laugh and a sob. "That was...that was beautiful."
One thing that Li had wanted to accomplish with the song was to transport Ahsoka somewhere else. Little else could do that as easily as music could, while simultaneously invoking emotions in others. When she finished and saw how Ahsoka reacted, she had a wide smile on her face.
“Thank you. I wrote it for you.” Li had to wonder how that would go over with Ahsoka.
“You wrote it for me?” Ahsoka was shocked. She wiped at her eyes. “I can’t believe you did that. It was so beautiful, so perfect.”
Emotions were supposed to be a bad thing but Ahsoka never really cared.
“I’m glad that you liked it. I wanted to write something for you, about you, and that’s what came to me.” Li said with a smile. She set her violin down, the went over and sat beside Ahsoka. “I will play it for you as often as you want to hear it.” She’d also record it, but that was going to be part of Ahsoka’s Christmas present.
Ahsoka took Li’s hand, bringing it to her lips and kissing her palm. “You might get tired of playing it. I love you.” A huge grin was plastered on her face and she still felt a little raw. Raw, dangerous emotion that twisted through her. She kissed Li’s hand again.
“I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of playing it. I love you, too.” Li said with a wide smile. Ahsoka was now immortalized in a song. Li wasn’t planning to try and publish this one because she wanted it to be only for Ahsoka. She didn’t want to share this one with anyone else. Except for Yang who would probably hear it at some point as well.
“We could record it,” Ahsoka suggested. “Just so I can keep it with me, always.” Despite her words, she’d prefer to hear it in person. There might be something lost in the transition from live to recorded. A certain edge that wouldn’t translate.
Rubbing her hand up Li’s arm, Ahsoka leaned in and kissed her. “I’m unbelievably touched.”
“Well, I was going to do that and add it to your Christmas present. There’s a studio at school I was going to record it in so the sound isn’t ruined by background noise.” Li wasn’t a sound engineer so she wasn’t planning to mix the song once it was recorded. She wanted it to be more straight like it was a live recording.
She returned the kiss and smiled. “I’m happy that the song touched you like that.”
“Really?” Ahsoka hadn’t expected Li to put that level of effort into it. She pushed back some of Li’s hair with her fingers, hands on either side of her head as she did so. Now she had no idea what to get Li. It had been something on her mind and she didn’t know if Li even celebrated, or what she’d want. Or appreciate. Besides something a little sexy but that was usually a bonus present and not the main gift.
“Yes, really,” she said, loving the feel of Ahsoka’s fingers in her hair Li hadn’t really celebrated Christmas before, at least not with her family as they were Buddhists, not Christians. But now she had her own life, and she felt that she wanted to embrace Christmas. Li shifted to snuggle up to Ahsoka.
Ahsoka dragged her fingers through Li’s hair, loosening it as she did so. It let her really enjoy the texture and softness. She twirled some around her fingers, then put her hand on Li’s back to pull her more into the snuggling. A little laugh escaped her and she couldn’t remember the last time she’d felt this happy.
Arms slipping around Ahsoka, she loved the way Ahsoka played with her hair. It felt nice, and she didn’t tire of the feeling. “I probably should have asked before, but do you celebrate Christmas? And if so, what do you usually do for it?”
“Well, I like the lights,” Ahsoka answered. “I grew up Buddhist but had friends who celebrated. I like the idea of gifts, and of the general be kind to your fellow peeps. This time of year Plo Koon and I used to volunteer at shelters, and we had our own little gift celebration. What about you?”
Li perked up a bit at that. “I was raised Buddhist as well, though I had some friends who were Christian. I tended to exchange gifts with friends, but that was about it. I do enjoy the spirit of Christmas, even if I do not believe in the religious aspect of it.”
“I’m okay with that. I like that idea a lot, actually.” Ahsoka pulled li more fully into her lap. “We can make our own holiday tradition. How about December 20th Ham Day.”
Any excuse to have a ham, honestly.
“At this rate I’m going to think that your favorite food is ham,” Li teased gently with a chuckle as she settled onto Ahsoka’s lap. “But I like making our own holiday. I’ll have to ask Yang what she does this time of year.” She didn’t know if Yang was Christian or not, so it was best to ask. She also didn’t want to leave her out.
“The only thing better than ham is a roast, and whoever heard of a holiday roast?” Oh though there’d probably be christmas roast. Ahsoa had a certain taste and she was fond of Ham. No, she really, really loved ham. The taste, the juiciness. All of it.
“I’m sure we could make a roast, make our own tradition. Why not?” Li suggested. Though she filed away the liking of ham for later. She’d definitely need to make something with ham at some point.
“...as long as I get a ham sometime,” Ahsoka warned, teasingly. She finally freed her hand of Li’s hair, if only to poke her nose. “You don’t have to indulge me. Even if we went to Denny’s or something, I would like it. As long as I’m with you.”
Li laughed at that. “Isn’t indulging part of this holiday?” Though she grinned. “Though I agree. As long as we are together, it does not matter what we do.” Since neither of them had grown up celebrating the holiday, it didn’t have the same level of importance to them. What was important to Li was to spend the time with people she cared about, and perhaps find their own tradition that they could celebrate.
“Indulging is definitely part of that holiday.” Was it something they should indulge in? Ahsoka had been taught that indulgence was something she should avoid, both by her foster dad and also as a jedi. All things in moderation, but that wasn’t as fun as it could be.
“I just want to do it with you. And maybe Yang. Though there are a few things Yang can’t participate in.”
She had to laugh a bit. “I am certain there are a few things that Yang wouldn’t want to participate in. At least with us.” She winked at Ahsoka with a smile. “Maybe we could do a dinner thing with Yang? Or a movie night or game night or something?”
“Game night sounds fun. We could make appetizers like meatballs and fondu and stuff and video game and do board games. And cards.” Ahsoka was a shark when it came to cards, and she didn’t even need the force for that. Thinking about the idea made her excited. “It would be a lot of fun!”
“Then maybe we can do that! Something fun and our own way of celebrating together.” Li didn’t know if Yang had plans with her family or not, but they could easily do a game night on a day other than Christmas.
“I love it... Now…” Ahsoka slid her hand up Li’s shirt, stroking her fingers along her skin. “I need to properly unwrap my present.”
Li shivered at Ahsoka’s touch and pressed closer to her. “Perhaps in the bedroom,” she suggested before leaning in and kissing Ahsoka. After all, they didn’t need to scar Yang again by her walking in on them.
