Thanksgiving had never been Kate’s favorite holiday, though she was enjoying it more on recent years. Wednesday she called her family to talk to her sister, cousin, and father, and Thursday was turkey day with her wife and sister-in-law. Maybe a plus one if Anna had one.
It didn’t really matter, it wasn’t like Kate could cook but she knew people and knew where to order in a feast that made it look like she could cook a traditional meal. She made sure to give the catering company a huge bonus too, then spent the rest of the afternoon letting the food heat up. It smelled so good it was criminal.
Elsa’s enjoyment of Thanksgiving had definitely increased since reconnecting with her sister and getting married. Discovering her wife also liked to order in was a bonus, since Elsa wasn’t a great cook either. She’d gotten better but not thanksgiving dinner level.
Entering the kitchen she wrapped her arms around Kate, “Mmm that smells amazing” she said with a smile. Checking the clock in the kitchen she realised Anna was due any minute.
Anna was a fully fledged adult now. She was twenty-one (as of last weekend) and could enjoy all the benefits. So when she came over for Thanksgiving Dinner, she brought a bottle of wine. And while Anna couldn’t even make toast without hurting herself and burning the place down, she could absolutely grow vegetables in the garden. Hopefully some of the herbs and tubers would make it into tonight’s meal.
Wine in hand, Anna knocked on the front door before pushing it open and letting herself in. “Happy Thanksgiving!!"
“I’m an amazing cook, I know.” Kate turned in Elsa’s arms and kissed her. “Watch as I conjure delicious turkey and stuffing out of thin air.”
She extricated herself to greet Anna with a hug. “Wine? Daring. Happy Thanksgiving. I was just finishing cooking dinner. By cooking I mean reheating everything.”
“Magical” Elsa grinned with a wink before moving over to hug her sister herself, “Twenty one for less than a week and already bringing along a bottle” she teased, “Thank you Anna”
Anna lifted one arm to wrap it around her sister, hugging her tightly. “Happy Turkey Day!” Then she laughed. “Reheating’s fine. It’s more than I can do, anyway.” Anna released the hug, then moved to hug Kate, beaming at the sight of her sister-in-law. She held up the bottle playfully before the hug. “Isn’t that my job now? As the youngest drinker?”
“None of us can cook, I’m not sure how we actually survive.” Kate was definitely not above using her family’s money to ensure they lived comfortably. She made up for it with charity, at least. “That is your job. Youngest drinker brings the wine. Oldest drinker teaches the youngest drinker the best drinks and places to get plastered. Which would be me.”
Kate definitely had a point, if anything happened they would be screwed. Elsa didn’t think you could live on toast and cereal, though they could try.
“So does that mean the middle drinker just rolls her eyes at you both and enjoys the wine?” she asked with a smirk.
Anna gave a laugh. “Yes to the teaching, and yes to the eye rolls. I can’t imagine it any other way.” She and Elsa had that amazing garden in the back of the house, growing all kinds of vegetables… it was a little sad Anna didn’t know how to prepare them. Not a big deal, though. Elsa was a better cook than Anna would ever be.
“So, let’s crack open that bottle, then! And get some eating started.” Anna grinned over at her sisters.
“That’s right.” Kate cracked the bottle open and started to pour them some glasses. The timer went off, and she ran to get everything out of the oven. There was a burst of vivid cursing as she burned herself a little, before she shouted. “It’s okay! Everything is okay! The only thing burned is me!”
It was true, since Anna had started growing things Elsa was much better at using them in making different dishes. Still Thanksgiving dinner was a little beyond her skills.
Elsa took over the pouring of wine until Kate cursed, moving over to her wife she took her hand and instantly cooled the burn. “Let me help” she said, creating ice oven gloves for herself and helping Kate remove things from oven safely.
Anna jumped a little at the sound of the cursing, looking worried. She took Kate by her word, though, and picked up her wine glass. It was amazing to her how Elsa was so good at her ice powers that she could do amazing things like that. Anna watched as Elsa and Kate took over the kitchen and brought food out to the table, in awe of their cooking skills.
Anna grinned. “I’m afraid I’d make even more of a mess if I tried to help.”
“I knew there was a reason I married you.” Kate grinned, sucking on her finger a little, but Elsa’s ice had really helped. “That and coming up with ice sculptures for fancy parties, you could make a mint that way.”
With the food served, Kate swept her hand over the table. This was really the second best part. The best part was being part of this family. Oh, she loved her father and sister and cousin. But she loved her wife and sister-in-law too. “Bon appetite!”
Being as relaxed as she was with her wife and sister Elsa often found that her powers came more naturally and she was able to control them very well. It was incredible how quickly she’d gotten used to using them.
“Well if anything happens we have a fallback business” she grinned.
“It looks great, thank you” Elsa said pressing a quick kiss to Kate’s lips and ruffling Anna’s hair, “Let’s dig in”
Anna laughed at the ruffle. This was perfect. This was family. She was home, and warm, and happy--not a frozen head or heart in sight. “Yay food!” She exclaimed, then took her seat to start dishing up food. It was a perfect Thanksgiving.
