Who: Paroline (Peeta and Caroline)
What: Proposal!
Where: Restaurant
When: Tonight!
Rating: Low. Just feels
Status: Complete
Today was the day. Peeta had been planning this for quite a while, but he knew better than to attempt it during the holidays, so this inbetween time was his go to. Everything was going well and he had to admit that he was incredibly nervous because things could go sour really fast. Doing a proposal in a public place wasn’t his ideal, but at least their table was a bit by itself so if things went sour Peeta could hussle out of there as fast as he could. Hopefully things would go fine and he would end the night as a happier man than he had been before.
The night started out with a nice tour around various Christmas displays that were popping up around Orange County and Peeta could definitely feel the Christmas spirit was starting to come around now that it had turned into December. After that came dinner and now it was time for dessert. Peeta had been fascinated by those chocolate globes that melted away when you poured chocolate on them and decided it had enough flare for something like this without being overly cheesy. It had taken some calls around town to find out someone who could do that, but eventually he found the perfect restaurant.
“Did you enjoy the lights?” Peeta asked as they were in that brief in between period before the dessert was brought out. He spotted the waiter in the distance and he reached up to nervously run a hand through his hair as the dessert was brought over. His mind silently prayed that things would go well as the dessert was placed in front of them and the waiter waited for them to admire the chocolate before pouring the hot chocolate syrup over it to melt it away and reveal the ring inside of hers.
Peeta had been acting a little off most of the night. Anxious. But the vampire had no idea why. The only thing that came to mind was maybe he had new dreams? Which would be weird considering his had ended awhile ago. A pretty conclusive wrapping up from what he understood, he got his happy ending after all the torture he had gone through. So she really had no idea what was up tonight.
She was trying not to think about it and just enjoy their night together. Peeta would open up eventually, they weren’t the type to keep things from each other. Besides the night had been pretty amazing, first with the wonderful light tour and then the delicious dinner (even if Peeta’s cooking was still better). Now it was almost time for dessert. She wasn’t sure why he insisted she also order one of those chocolate globe things but who was she to argue with the dessert master?
“Mhm,” Caroline confirmed. “My favorite was that one house that decorated it’s roof like a candy cane. Can you imagine their electricity bill?” she teased and was just about to ask what his favorite was when the waiter brought over the dessert. Okay, seeing the chocolate melt away the globe was pretty cool. She got why Peeta wanted her to experience this now.
And then she saw the ring. “Oh my god!”
“I don’t think I would enjoy having to foot that bill. They’ve got to be sitting on a decent amount of money and probably retired since that would take a lot of time as well,” Peeta commented with a smile. If he retired somewhere that did Christmas lights like that in the neighborhood he would probably get into it, but for now he would be fine with decorating a tree inside the apartment and leaving it at that. However, it was time for those thoughts to disappear as he watched Caroline watching her dessert.
The big reveal was done and he hoped that it was a good exclamation. He turned to her in his chair and smiled at her, “Caroline Elizabeth Forbes, I would get down on one knee but I don’t know if I’d be able to get back up again. This has been one of the best years of my life and I want to make sure my life continues to be as great. I’ve done my waiting to do this and there’s no one else, but you, Caroline. Will you marry me?” She knew he wasn’t a man of many words, but he was saying all he could and reached over to take her hand.
“Oh my god!” Caroline squealed again as Peeta started his speech. She couldn’t believe this was really happening. Of course she had thought about this, and they had talked about it a little bit after Alaric’s ring had shown up. But still, it felt unreal. Causing her to squeal “Oh my god!” for a third time once he asked the question. Then she was silent for a brief moment, nodding her head. “Yes!”
That was exactly the reaction that he was hoping for and he couldn’t help but grin as he reached into the dessert and pulled out the ring. He wiped it off on his napkin and then grabbed her hand. This was actually happening and he was so thrilled that she was saying yes to him. It showed how far they had come in their relationship. The ring slipped onto her finger and he moved in to kiss her.
Caroline returned the kiss wrapping her arms around Peeta’s neck. Some people in the restaurant clapped. Oh right, they were still in public. “I love you,” she beamed slowly pulling away from the kiss. But she wasted no time removing her left hand from around Peeta so she could admire the ring. It was perfect, he was perfect, this night was perfect.
It was a little hilarious to hear people clapping for them, but it wasn’t the worst thing in the world. He had finally found the right girl for him and she had finally reached the point where she wanted to marry him. This wasn’t expected when they first met, but things had gone so well for them. “I love you too,” Peeta replied with a smile and watched her as she looked at the ring, “Does this mean I did a good job picking out the ring?” Even if she didn’t want to admit it it was totally important to her.
“It’s so much better than Alaric’s,” she teased still admiring it. Of course she would have loved it even if it was smaller than her dream ring, but she was definitely glad the rock was actually decent sized. As much as Caroline tried to push past it, part of her was still that shallow girl she had been back in high school. “Oh my god!” she exclaimed suddenly for about the hundredth time that night. “I have to call my mom!” As much as this moment was about her and her boyfriend, or well fiance now, she couldn’t wait to tell Liz the news.
“Well, thanks, I’m glad that I did a good job with that,” Peeta laughed as he kissed her once again. It was adorable how excited she was and he was so thrilled that she said yes. He had been so nervous and now it was just pure happiness inside of him, “You can call her from the car on the way home. Let’s finish our dessert and get out of here. I want to be alone.” It was probably in their best interest to not make out in the middle of the restaurant.
Okay. She could wait a bit to call her mom. Still she had to tell her tonight. But Peeta quickly brought her back to the moment. “We can’t eat this!” she protested. “We need to like freeze it or something.” As a memento, of how Peeta proposed. Not that Caroline would ever forget.
“You’re going to eat it,” Peeta laughed as he leaned over to kiss her cheek, “ I can make you one of these sometime anytime you want one. But we’re going to enjoy this and once we’re finished we can head home.” His eyebrows wiggled a little at the end of his comment and he couldn’t help but chuckle. They would have a lot to celebrate when they got home.
“You’re just proving my point. We can have one at home. This one is special. It needs to be preserved for like ever.” At least for now. Before he could protest again she waved the waiter over for the check. There was no time to waste, she didn’t want it to melt anymore. Not to mention she wanted to get home and celebrate.
