Sharon was big into baking lately. The holiday brought out the domestic side in her, she figured, and she’d spent many evenings in the kitchen, rolling out dough and mixing fillings. This was the time of year for Pumpkin pie, and Sharon wanted to make the best pumpkin pie in all of Orange County.
She’d been practicing. Her pie was pretty good. Practically professional level. And she had plenty now. Her practice meant that she had pies for everyone. She was out delivering them today, ready for the big day, and headed to see Athos. She rang the bell, holding the pie in one hand, and wearing a smile on her face.
Athos loved cooking, but he wasn’t much of a baker. Usually it wasn’t a problem because with Baxter’s not too far away they always had a place to call into when the sweet tooth needed a treat. Which, with D’Artagnan, was fairly regularly.
When the bell rang he put down the book he’d been reading in their little reading nook in the living room and went to the door, “Sharon, come on in. How have you been? Busy by the looks of it” he greeted her.
“I’ve been really good, thanks,” Sharon replied, giving her friend a bright smile. She stepped inside, leaning over to kiss Athos’ cheek before heading into the kitchen to find some counter space to set the pie down. “How are you? I hope I’m not interrupting anything. I brought you a pie! Home made.”
“I’m glad to hear it” he said returning the kiss to her own cheek, “I’ve been well thanks. Getting used to being on our own schedule. You could never interrupt anything, D’Artagnan isn’t here right now but thank you from both of us. It looks amazing, I didn’t know you baked”
Sharon laughed. “I normally cook enough for an army. I’m so thankful that Bucky moved in, I was tired of three days worth of leftovers.” She turned her full attention to Athos now that the pie was safe on the counter. “This is sort of new for me. Baking. I hope it’s good--I mean, I think it’s pretty good, but I’m biased, I made it.”
“We’re more than happy to help out if you need us” Athos offered with a grin, “We can offer wine in exchange” he added, because it was nice sometimes not to cook. And D’Artagnan, while he had many good points, cooking was not among them. “I am sure it will be, it looks and smells amazing” he assured her, “Can I offer you a drink?”
“I will absolutely take you up on that offer,” Sharon said, grinning brightly. Hey, wine in exchange for food? That was a done deal. And it was good company, too. She just hoped that Athos and D’Artagnan got along with Bucky. Because he was around now, pretty much all the time. And she was thrilled for it. “Sure, I’d love one.” Sharon said, dusting her hands off on her jeans. “I’ll have whatever you’re having.”
Athos liked Bucky, they’d met a few times now and he appreciated the other man’s quiet manner. He reminded him of himself, though perhaps a little less stern than how Athos came across. “I was going to put the kettle on, so is coffee okay?” he asked her.
“Coffee sounds lovely.” Sharon said, giving Athos a smile. “And I’d like to hear how you’re doing. How’s the PI business?” She asked, following him into the kitchen.
“It’s going really well. I’m still training Irisa, she’s doing great. Just don’t tell her I said that. We’ve got a steady flow of work and local police departments have even referred some cases to us” Athos was proud of what they had achieved. It had been worth the risk.
Sharon grinned at that. “Your secret’s safe with me,” she teased, then leaned against the sink so they could talk while he put together the coffee in the kitchen. “I’m really glad to hear that things are going well. I’m proud of you for all that you do.” She knew that Athos was a good man. One of the best, actually. And to see him happy made her happy.
“Thank you Sharon, I’m just glad our little venture into the world of being PI’s didn’t fail” Athos told her with a smile. They had needed a change though and he believed D’Artagnan was happier for it. “How is everything going with Bucky? You settled into living together?”
“We are. It’s settling into a pretty comfortable routine, actually.” Sharon was head over heels in love with the man, which was probably obvious by the way her face went pink and simply shone with love whenever he came up in conversation. “And Viv’s getting ridiculously big. It’s almost unbelievable how big she’s getting. Bucky watches her most days when I go to work, though my mom also helps.”
“I’m glad, he’s a good man” Athos commented, he liked him and more than that he liked Sharon and Bucky together. He made Sharon light up and she deserved that feeling. “I’ve heard that kids do that, shoot up quickly I mean. It’s good she gets to spend time with Bucky, I imagine that’s nice for both of them” Athos wasn’t sure if kids were in his future, he wasn’t sure D’Artagnan would ever feel ready for them but they had the dog at least.
“It is. It’s very strange that my daughter has so many dads, you know?” Sharon shrugged softly. “One biological dad, obviously, but she’s got so many other men in her life who love her so viciously. Leon’s started to be a little more forthcoming now that Viv’s up and walking about. He still won’t change diapers, but I can’t blame him. And Logan’s so fond of her, too. Then there’s you and D’Artagnan, obviously, and Porthos is a given. And now Bucky. She’s so lucky.”
Athos chuckled at the diaper comment, D’Artagnan was the same whereas Athos himself was far more practical and took pride that he’d learnt how. “Well you know we’re lucky guys too. She might be the closest I ever get to a daughter so I appreciate you letting us share her like you do” he told Sharon sincerely.
Sharon was touched that Athos was so fond of Viv. She gave him a smile, her heart warm and clenching. “Of course,” she said, emotion welling in her eyes. “We’re as good as family now. There’s no getting rid of us, even if you want to.”
“We’d never want to” Athos promised her, patting her hand, “You’re stuck with us just as much” He appreciated Sharon’s friendship a lot and was glad they all had each other.
Sharon was, too. She reached up to wrap her arms around him in a big hug. Thank God for good friends.
