The first couple months of Bea’s life had gone by both excruciatingly slowly and in the blink of an eye. Audrey was glad that they’d taken so many pictures, because with the recovery from the birth and the lack of sleep, she didn’t have a whole lot of memories besides what was in those pictures.
It was early morning, and Bea was cuddled up against Audrey’s chest. She’d nursed off and on for most of the night, so Audrey just brought the baby into bed with her. They’d both fallen asleep, eventually. The morning sunshine was coming in, and the baby started to stir.
Merlin of course, loved taking pictures of his little family. Especially his baby girl. He couldn’t deny he already felt so protective of her, and he understood what those men who said they’d kill anybody who hurt their daughter were coming from. He was protective of Ben too, naturally, but not quite to the same extent.
When he heard Bea start to move he eased the baby out of Audrey’s arms and sat up with her in his own, he was a natural with the kids which was something he would always be grateful for.
Audrey was still out cold as the baby was gently coaxed out of her arms. She rolled over onto her stomach and gave a little snore. Her body was so desperate for the sleep now-a-days that she could sleep through almost anything outside of a baby’s whimper or cry.
The baby’s brow was crinkling. Her eyes hadn’t opened, but she was balling up her little fists and making a pained face. It could have been hunger or gas. It was hard to tell which!
Merlin, hoping it was gas since he wasn’t equipped for the other stroked her stomach and rocked her gently. “It’s okay” he told her softly, “Daddy is here, you’re okay” Bea’s face relaxed a bit upon hearing her father’s voice and when those little eyes did open she focused on him.
Audrey stirred, even as Bea was calming. She lifted her arm from her face and turned to figure out what was going on. When she saw Merlin holding Bea and rocking her back to sleep, Audrey smiled warmly. Sleepily.
“I don’t think she’s hungry” he told his wife softly when he felt her move, “Just a little uncomfortable” he reassured her, letting her know she could go back to sleep if she liked.
“May be gas, or something.” Audrey said, fighting off a yawn. She could feel it in her breasts that it was probably time to nurse. “But I can take her. See if she wants an early breakfast.” The good news about the early breakfast was Audrey could nurse her to sleep, put her in her crib, then she and Merlin could have alone time before Ben woke up in his bedroom.
Merlin nodded, waiting for Audrey to sit comfortably before handing over their daughter. She fussed a little before latching on, letting out a little bum rumble as she did so. That would probably help make her feel better too. “You sleep okay?” he asked her as he watched her feed Bea with a look of adoration for both girls on his face.
Audrey was used to the strange sounds and smells that came from the baby. It was comforting, actually, to know that Bea’s insides were working properly. Audrey settled in to nurse the baby, still very sleepy from waking up so early. She nodded, looking over at Merlin. Her hand reached out to take hold of his. “You?”
It may be childish considering he was a dad now but Merlin still found it amusing, mostly when either of the kids were in the bath and made bubbles with their bum. Some things you never grew out of. “Yeah, she’s already getting better I think” he commented, he was sure it had taken Ben longer to settle into a routine.
They were experienced at this. Audrey would never claim that she knew what she was doing, but at least she’d done it all before. Her body sure knew what it was doing. She’d fallen into the life of very little sleep and nursing and all that like a rockstar.
“I think we all are.” Audrey gave him a smile, squeezing his hand. “Do you think we can find someone to watch the kids so we can go on a date?”
Audrey had taken to it much better than Merlin, he still got hit by a wave of tiredness at work in the afternoon if they’d had an up and down night but thankfully his team were super.
Linking their fingers and lifting them to press a kiss to the back of Audrey’s hand he nodded, “I think Nina and Gabe would love that” he grinned, they were their go to babysitters and he was glad they were such good friends.
“Good.” Audrey said. She gave his hand a little tug in toward her so she could steal a kiss from his lips. “Because I miss you. I know we sleep side by side every night… but I miss you.” Maybe Bea would sleep for long enough for Audrey and Merlin to get some bonding time in.
The baby was now fast asleep, having fallen off her breast, and was air-suckling in her dreams. Audrey tucked her boob back into her top, and lifted the baby to pass over to her husband. “Can you put her in her crib?”
“Miss you too” he told her with a smile, “I think a date night sounds perfect, Ben will love showing his new Lego to Auntie Nina” They’d gotten Ben a couple of new Lego sets recently and discovered Nina had a bit of love for Lego too, so they’d bonded over that.
“Of course” Merlin took Bea and placed her in the cot, smiling as he watched her for a moment. He never knew how much a parent could love their children until he’d became a dad.
