The weather had taken a sudden turn that Morrigan had not anticipated. There was snow. In southern California of all places! While she may question what was making it snow, she wasn’t going to avoid it. On the contrary, she felt rather jovial about it. Her mood had been brighter recently, and now it was made even brighter with the arrival of snow. After checking on the plants in her greenhouse, Morrigan stepped outside of it and glanced around. Upon not seeing Maia, she decided to do something a bit silly.
She shifted forms, purple smoke and some electricity crackling around her. When it dissipated, an elegant-looking black and white Siberian Husky was standing where Morrigan had been. She didn’t account for where Barkspawn was, if only because she didn’t want Maia to see her shifting forms and doing this and had been more focused on looking for Maia.
Morrigan started running around the yard a bit, then she would periodically fling herself onto her back in the snow and roll all around in it. She’d also decided to start chasing snowflakes, chomping them out of the air. All in all, she was having a great time, and thought she was rather incognito. Except for the fact if Maia did see her, she’d know they didn’t have a Husky. But that was a thought far from Morrigan’s mind right then. She was more interested in playing in the snow.
Play?? Barkspawn’s ears swiveled and he lifted his head. He bounded to the window and lifted up so that his paws were on the glass as he peered out. PLAY! He didn’t recognize the other dog, but then there were so many new kinds of dogs and smells here. The cats didn’t play enough, though one had taken to sleeping on to of him. Barkspawn didn’t really mind, he’d always liked cats and The Master had charged him with protecting them as if they were a part of the warband. Barkspawn took protecting very seriously, even if they were dumb creatures like cats and most humans.
Rushing to the door, he nosed at it, then hopped up so that he could turn the handle with his paws. Free now, he paused only long enough to kick the door closed, then charged out into the snow. The Mabari leapt and belly flopped right into a snowbank! He burst out of the snow and shook himself out. Faced with Morrigan, he did the traditional splay-legged straight-tailed PLAY?! position.
The sudden presence of Barkspawn belly flopping into a snowbank drew Morrigan’s attention, she quickly flipped to lay on her stomach with her head up, ears at attention as she watched the Mabari. When he assumed the play position in front of her, she just looked at him, cocking her head to the side momentarily before she realized it was the play signal.
Alright, maybe if she played with him that would make it more believable that she was a dog and not a human shapeshifted as a dog. So she got in the play position as well, then she barked once and started running. She well knew if he tried to pounce on her, it could potentially hurt. He was bigger and stronger than she was, and somehow she felt that Maia wouldn’t appreciate their dog breaking one, or more, of Morrigan’s bones in this state.
And with the commotion that Barkspawn had gone through to get outside, Bastet’s attention had been attracted and she worked her way towards the back door. She leapt up on the nearest piece of furniture so she could look out the window and watch what was happening outside. She meowed, and not long after, Persephone came and joined her in the window. Whatever was happening out there, they didn’t really want any part of it, but they would at least watch!
Barkspawn spun around and bounced in joyous circles. Sure, the cats were fun but nothing could beat another dog. He bounced and plopped in the snow, rolling around like it was the best thing ever.
“What is all the commotion?” Maia came up behind the cats, scritching them absently as she peered out the window. What had Barkspawn gotten into this time? Maia had a vivid memory of the Compost Incident and shuddered. “Aw, look, Barkspawn’s found a friend! That’s a gorgeous dog, don’t you think?”
Morrigan was oblivious to who was watching. She bounded around in the snow again, flinging herself down and rolling around in it. It got to the point where the black markings were almost completely covered by snow, thus making her look nearly all white. At least until she shook herself off, then went back to chasing snowflakes.
The cats purred a bit upon receiving scritches. Bastet looked up at Maia, pressing into her hand and wanting more in the way of scritches and pets.
Maia grinned, rubbing her hand down Bastet’s head and back, and scritching her rump. “Don’t tell Morrigan you’re getting scritches from me, she’ll feel betrayed.”
Something about that husky though. Maia wondered who the owner was. But it and Barkspawn were enjoying themselves to a ridiculous degree. “I really need to learn more shapeshift forms. What do you think? A lovely silver cat?”
Bastet purred louder, backing arching into Maia’s touch. She definitely approved of this. Persephone eyed Maia and Bastet. Perhaps she wouldn’t mind a fellow silver colored cat.
Outside, Morrigan was enjoying herself a bit too much. Perhaps so much so that she almost lost herself to the dog’s instincts. She took a running leap and belly flopped into a snowbank. She then sat up, mouth open, tongue hanging out as she was panting, but she definitely looked happy.
Unluckily for Morrigan, Maia had started filming almost as soon as she’d talked about shifting into a lovely cat. “That is a very happy puppy.” She left the cats, taking her scritches with her and headed outside to see if she could lure the husky to her. “Aren’t you a lovely puppy! I think I could give you some treats, how does that sound?”
She’d said the T word. Barkspawn bowled Morrigan over to get to Maia, pouncing on her. Maia went down laughing.
The instant Morrigan heard Maia’s voice, she froze in her frolicking. She turned to look at her, but didn’t have much time to think of what to do because Barkspawn bowled her over. She yelped as she went down into the snow. She growled a bit, showing her displeasure at Barkspawn. Getting back to her feet, she shook herself off and looked for a quick exit.
There was none, however. The yard was fenced and she couldn’t open doors in this form. She cursed inwardly, and decided to run behind the greenhouse to buy herself some more time to think of what to do.
Maia pushed Barkspawn off. “Easy, boy! You’re going to snow me in! I’ll get you a treat, I promise. But help me track down where you’re little friend went, would you?” Oh, she hoped it was a girl. Maia suddenly had mad ideas about cute little husky/mabari mixes. She got to her feet and searched around. “Ahah! I think you went that way!” She jogged towards the greenhouse.
If Morrigan were able to read Maia’s mind, she would be beyond horrified by those thoughts. First all, she wasn’t actually a dog, she refused to be bred. Second of all, no. As she heard Maia move towards the greenhouse, Morrigan kept moving, trying to stay out of sight. But again, she wasn’t accounting for Barkspawn.
Barkspawn burst out of the snow behind Morrigan like some kind of happy demon dog, and Maia facepalmed. She tried to approach Morrigan a lot more gentle. “Easy, easy. Aren’t you gorgeous? Oh I think Barkspawn likes you I hope you’re a girl.”
Morrigan yowled in surprise when Barkspawn burst out of the snow behind her. She looked at him, then looked at Maia. Hope I’m a girl? What?? Morrigan thought. She didn’t bare her teeth or anything, but she was seemingly a bit skittish. It was just a side effect of her not knowing what the hell was on Maia’s mind.
“What do you think, Barkspawn? Ever want puppies?” Maia ruffled his fur, and crouched in front of the husky. “Though I suppose I should ask Morrigan what she things about the idea, hmm?”
Alright, that was it. Morrigan wasn’t going to stand for that. In a cloud of smoke and electricity, Morrigan returned to her human form, pointedly eyeing Maia. “You are not breeding me!” Thankfully the fence was a solid one, and also tall so there was no danger of anyone else seeing her not-so-normal transformation.
But they might have heard the words and boy would that be awkward to explain. It was already awkward enough. Maia was torn between horror and amusement. She settled for somewhere in between, but started with doubling over and laughing.
Morrigan huffed and crossed her arms as Maia started laughing. If she were a bird, she’d definitely have ruffled feathers right now. As it was, she settled for the crossed arms and narrowed eyes. Of course, Maia hadn’t seemed to know it was her. Or had she known and had thus purposely said that to get her back into human form? She wouldn’t put the latter past Maia.
“You were playing!” Maia waved her hand as she started giggling again. “In the snow! You were frolicking. I have video!” She flailed her phone about, and the laughter only got worse.
She huffed again, keeping her arms crossed. “Of course you have video.” No doubt Maia would post that on the network for everyone to see. Morrigan debated zapping Maia’s phone with a jolt of lightning or something, but she refrained herself from doing that. Though it seemed every time she did something potentially embarrassing, Maia was there to document it. “I do hope you are enjoying yourself.”
Maia cackled, hiding her phone just in case Morrigan decided to zap it. She should really get that auto-upload app, just in case. “I’m not enjoying it as much as you are, love! You make an adorable husky, did you know that?”
The auto-upload app would be the bane of her existence, she just knew it. This would be so much easier to get away with in Thedas. Maia wouldn’t be able to record such things there, at least. “I am hardly adorable.” She was almost offended by being called adorable. At this rate, she really needed to get Maia back, but it was so difficult to embarrass her while it was so very easy to embarrass Morrigan.
“You’re always adorable.” Maia smiled, almost moon-eyed in her joy. She came over and put her hand on Morrigan’s arm. “I could just be biased. It’s rare to see you really let loose and enjoy yourself like a normal person.”
Apparently frolicking around as a dog was a normal thing in Maia’s eyes.
“Perhaps tis bias you speak from.” Such things were normal where Morrigan was concerned. After all, some days she didn’t want to deal with people so she’d simply shift into an animal form and run off for a while. “Enjoy such a rarity while you are able, I shall ensure that it is quite a while before I do it again.” If only to escape more video or photographic evidence of such things.
Maia leaned in, stealing a quick kiss off of Morrigan’s lips. Her own were a little cold from the weather. “Don’t stop on my account. Freak weather or no.”
She’d always liked the snow. London covered in it was always a treat, at least until it got annoying.
“Not while you are armed with a camera shall I let loose again.” Morrigan eyed Maia. She’d gotten more than enough ‘damning’ video footage. Sure Morrigan was a husky in the video and unless pointedly stated that it was her, no one would really know. But still, she didn’t want more footage of her getting out there if she could help it.
“Pity, I can think of a few fun ways you can let loose for the camera.” Maia waggled her eyebrows, and threaded her arms around Morrigan’s neck.
Only to shove snow down the back of her shirt.
“No.” Morrigan was never going to do anything like that in front of a camera. She let out a screech as Maia shoved snow down the back of her shirt. There was a stream of highly unlady-like language as she contorted and tried to get the snow out of her shirt. “You little devil!” Morrigan was going to seek revenge once she got the snow out of her shirt.
Maia started to cackle again. She danced out of reach, quietly forming an ice spell to block an expected counter attack. Barkspawn bounced around them, barking excitedly as though this was the best day of his life. It kind of was. Morrigan hadn’t even kicked him off of the bed that morning. Maia had figured it was just because the dog was warm.
It was not lost on Morrigan that they probably needed a bigger bed if the dog was going to continue to insist on sleeping with them. After all, things were intensely crowded in a queen sized bed with two people, a Mabari and two cats. At least it was the holiday season and they could probably find a king sized bed for a decent price given all the sales.
Once the snow was out of her shirt, she grabbed some snow to make a snowball, and once she spotted Maia, she launched it, only to watch it splatter against an ice barrier. “Now that is cheating,” she pointed out.
That Morrigan let the dog stay was a small miracle. Maia thought it was cute. Maia waggled her eyebrows. “Okay okay. No magic this time. I’m aaall vulnerable now, and everything!”
It was decidedly not cute in Morrigan’s opinion. Sometimes she just didn’t want to deal with the whining and sulking that would happen and result in her not being able to sleep any longer. Or so she told herself. She smirked a bit, made another snowball and threw it at Maia.
Maia dodged this one like a normal person, and flung one in response like she was some kind of baseball pitcher.
A really bad baseball pitcher considering she missed Morrigan by a mile. “Shite.” She scrambled to get another one.
Morrigan started to dodge, but then realized the snowball was going well wide of her. She arched her eyebrows a bit. “Is that the best throw you can make? I expected better from a Warden!” She playfully teased as she gathered another snowball and threw it at Maia again. However, this one, while intended for Maia’s torso, took a downward curve, instead heading for a leg.
“I’ll get you,” Maia promised. She took the snowball in the knee like a good adventurer, and threw another one. This time she managed to get it closer to Morrigan. And the third she aimed right for Morrigan’s chest.
And got promptly distracted imagining what Morrigan would look like in her usual dream outfit, with snow glistening on her cleavage.
She ducked the first snowball, even if she didn’t quite need to. The second, however, she took straight to the chest. Now, Morrigan wasn’t exactly equipped in winter clothing. Considering she’d been a dog while frolicking before, she hadn’t bothered with putting on a coat or gloves. Her shirt was undoubtedly going to be soaked by the time all was said and done.
As if the back of it wasn’t already both wet and freezing thanks to the snow Maia had shoved down it.
With a laugh, Morrigan launched another snowball, this time veering towards her shoulder. Or perhaps it was going wide.
The snowball went wide - and right into Maia’s face. Maia fell onto the ground, sputtering and laughing. She wiped her face, but it was too late. Barkspawn declared victory and flopped down on top of her. Maia shrieked, “Uncle!”
Barkspawn looked at Morrigan with a puppy dog grin.
Morrigan burst into laughter as the snowball hit Maia in the face and she fell to the ground. She doubled over, she was laughing so hard. “Oh now that is priceless!” She said in between some fits of laughter, her eyes glittering with mirth.
Morrigan was laughing, and Maia was down. She considered that worth it. Morrigan had a delightful laugh, and it made Maia smile in delight as she sat up. “Okay, you win. I concede!”
She had a bright grin on her face, one that was rather rare and Maia tended to be the only person to ever see it. “I shall be gracious in victory. Shall I lend you a hand to get up and then we may go inside and warm up?” Morrigan also needed to get out of these clothes before she caught cold. She held a hand out to Maia to help her up, though she also half expected Maia to pull her down.
Maia didn’t pull her down. She was happen to be pulled up, and she had very peculiar ideas about how exactly they could warm up. Affecting Morrigan’s cadence, she smiled. “Tis good to see you joyful.”
“Tis reserved only for you to see.” And sometimes Max, though definitely not to this level. She also gave Maia a knowing look at her words and how she’d affected her cadence. “Shall we go inside where tis warmer?”
“Lets.” Maia squeezed Morrigan’s hand and whistled a command for Barkspawn to follow. Inside, at least, in no way was she going to let Barkspawn join them in warming up, except as a dog blanket in front of the television.
With Maia’s hand in hers, she headed inside. Both cats were still perched in the window and Morrigan eyed them. “Seems as though there was quite the captive audience.” She shook her head a bit with a chuckle.
“They’re probably upset I abandoned them when I was giving them pets,” Maia quipped.
“Of that I have little doubt. Though I am certain they are willing to forgive.” She then turned to Maia. “However, we must get out of these clothes before we catch our deaths.” Morrigan gave Maia a suggestive smile as she moved to walk past her, shoulder brushing against Maia’s, fingertips ghosting along Maia’s arm. She began to head for the bedroom and glanced over her shoulder at Maia to see if she was coming.
Was that… a pun? Maia tilted her head, shivering not just from the cold. Trying not to be too eager, she followed after Morrigan. They had all day, after all!
