Elphaba wished she hadn’t decided to make a cake. She had such grand plans for icing it and making tea, but Mae just hadn’t settled for long enough once she’d got it mixed and in the oven. When the knock came on the door, she headed over and opened it while bouncing Mae who was crying. “Hey, come on in, sorry just uh, could you close the door?” she asked, smiling at Elsa and walking away with Mae in her arms.
Things at work were rather stressful currently so Elsa was happy to have a day off to do what she wanted and visiting Elphaba was a welcome task. Arriving Elsa could see Elphaba had her hands full, “Of course” she said closing the door behind her, “Is everything okay?” she asked, as she followed her friend and the baby.
“Yeah, fine I just...didn’t get through half the stuff I wanted to before you arrived is all,” Elphaba chuckled, juggling the baby from one arm to another. “Could I ask you to make some tea while I just try and feed her to settle her?” she asked apologetically.
“Absolutely, take your time I’ll get the tea sorted and you look after that precious little girl” Elsa said with a smile, patting Elphaba’s arm in reassurance before moving past them to get started.
“Thank you so much,” Elphaba smiled gratefully and moved to sit down, pulling the black nursing blanket off the back of the couch and covering herself and Mae as she settled to feed her. “Hope you don’t mind,” she referred to nursing Mae. “It’s one of the best ways to get her to settle,” she explained.
“Oh please, this is your home” Elsa said to her, “And even if it wasn’t don’t feel like you ever need to hide it. That little girl needs her food and you have it” she smiled.
Elphaba smiled over at Elsa as the other woman bustled about the kitchen. “I half made a cake for you by the way, it’s in the corner on the rack. I just didn’t get round to icing it or making it look fancy, sorry,” she apologised.
“That’s so sweet of you Elphie, you really didn’t have to” Elsa said looking over at her friend, “But thank you so much” she added, because she was grateful Elphaba had baked for her.
“No problem, help yourself to a slice if you like,” Elphaba smiled and she shifted Mae from one side to the other underneath the blanket. “So tell me a bit more about what’s been happening with you,” she smiled.
“Thanks, want some?” she asked, reaching for a couple of plates from the cupboard and retrieving a knife from the drawer. “Other than trying not to lose it in frustration at meetings I’ve not been doing much” she admitted, “It’s actually been a relief to just present the weather and not have to think about anything else for those few minutes”
“Always, I don’t know what it is but my body seems to want to make up for the food I didn’t eat when I was pregnant,” Elphaba joked. “That sounds high pressure. You’re not in this on your own are you? Do you have people supporting you at the station?” she asked.
“Well you are still giving food too” Elsa said, “Oh no, I have the board as well. That in itself is difficult sometimes though as there are a couple who voted for the cheeto in a blonde wig, it’s harder to remain neutral in meetings than it is to ensure the network is unbiased” she smiled wryly.
“That’s good,” Elphaba smiled at Elsa and sighed. “I have to admit to being...uneasy after the election,” she admitted quietly, stroking her thumb along Mae’s back as the baby began to settle against her breast.
“I think a lot of us are” Elsa said, “Personally I’m ready to freeze his ass at any time if he comes after us” she promised. She would protect her friends at any cost.
Elphaba grinned at that. “You mean turn into some sort of ice assassin? That would be pretty cool,” she laughed.
“Exactly, I’ve been working on creating a bow and arrow from ice. A few more practices and I think I might have it totally nailed” she grinned at Elphaba as she finished off cutting the cake and making the coffee.
Elphaba chuckled at that, resting her head back against the couch as she covered herself up under the blanket, trying not to jostle the baby too much. Once she was decent, she took the blanket off and stood, holding the baby carefully and moving over to the little travel cot they had set up in the front room. Lowering Mae into the bed, she hoped that she would manage to get her to sleep for at least ten minutes or so. Turning back to Elsa, she sighed and ran her hand through her messy hair. “Ahh, here’s hoping we get a little bit of peace,” she smiled and sat back down on the couch, relaxing back into the cushions.
“So how are you both getting on?” Elsa asked bringing everything over to the coffee table and smiling at the sleeping baby before sitting near Elphie. “Is sleep still a thing of memory?” She knew Bea was a restless baby and that Elphie had found it all a little tiring but she’d been hoping that had improved.
“We’re...doing better, thanks,” Elphaba nodded, looking across at her with a tired smile. “Mae likes to be close, she doesn’t sleep well if she’s too far away from me or Luthien. It makes sleeping for long periods difficult,” she sighed longingly.
“Oh dear, that does sound tough” Elsa sympathised, “I know it sounds strange but have you tried sleeping on the sheets you use in her crib and cot? I read somewhere that the baby can be reassured by your smell just as much as actual contact. Or maybe get her a teddy that she can snuggle to but put one of your tops on it so she can get that comfort”
“I'd looked into giving her toy but they say not to give her one until she's six months, so I've been holding off. I hadn't thought about the sheets thing, that's a really good idea,” Elphaba agreed, already planning changing the sheets in the cot.
“Oh that’s a good point” Elsa said, glad that Elphaba knew about that kind of thing. Elsa didn’t really have much actual experience with babies or children. “Let me know if it works. I’ll keep my eye out for any other tips too” she promised.
“They just say it reduces the risk of any...accidents in the cot,” Elphaba explained. “I will and thank you, my brain isn't always working well lately, sometimes I need someone to point stuff like that out” she grinned at Elsa and reached forward for her cake. “I'm just fortunate to be able to stay at home with her but it does start to get to you after a while,” she smiled.
“Of course, that makes sense” Elsa nodded, “Well if you like I can come and visit like this more. Give you some adult company so your brain doesn’t turn to mush too much. I’m sure Kate would like to drop by too”
“That sounds amazing!” Elphaba looked over at Elsa gratefully. “As long as you have time of course,” she told her friend.
“I will make the time, it’ll be good for me too” Elsa admitted, “We both need sensible adult time I think” And being around Elphie and the baby made her happy. If she could help her friend out too then it would be wonderful.
“Fantastic,” Elphaba grinned. She didn’t have many friends but Elsa was as dear to her as family and she would keep her as close as she could.
